Core F
Week 23
April 14-18, 2014
Dd made this planted last year for an Easter craft, and brought it back out and did it again this year.
Hello Bluebird! This bluebird is on our roof! This spring has been great for NEW birds coming to our backyard!!!! So exciting! Our backyard was just mud when we moved in; and I had to lay the sod; then slowly plant a few trees and bushes each year. The birds were not use to coming to our yard, but over the years I've been able to keep (and improve) a bird habitat for them to lure them into my life! It took 6-7 years to get the Red-Winged Blackbirds to come in; now this year we have Cardinals, Bluebirds, and most recently Barn Swallows sitting on our fence! How cool, huh?!
This was a better scholastic week for us, and we actually got a few more electives done. For our activities this week: Monday we had Knitting Club; which was a lot of fun. They had a birthday cake for Dd, and 2 others! They lit candles and sang for them. It was really nice. Tuesday, we had our next to last class of "Swim & Gym". We went to the library twice this week as well! Dd rec'd 2 kites and had a great time going out to our back field (not "our" field actually, but a farmers field that hasn't been planted yet) to fly the kites. She did this a lot! and really had a blast!

Jessica's Journey Dramatic Audio by Hesba Stretton and John Rhys-Davies (2013)
Audio:Lamplighter's "Jessica's Journey" (in process)
**Warning: There is a scene in the first 30 minutes of the first disc that might be disturbing for some listeners. The mother of the main character- Jessica, has a 'fit', and it sounds like she hits the daughter. So far, that is the only part of the story that I would fear could be difficult for some sensitive listeners. It is a very quick scene, but I think the author is trying to establish what a very bad mother our main character, Jessica, has.
Hesba Stretton, under the influence of her mentor Charles Dickens, exposed this darkness through her stories. Soon to become one of the most popular writers of the 19th century, she won widespread fame for her book Jessica's First Prayer. Before long it had sold at least a million and a half copies, outselling Alice in Wonderland by "nearly ten times as many"! Today, we bring Hesba Stretton's story to life as a world-class audio drama, Jessica's Journey. As a web of characters become entangled with the knowledge of their past sins, a minister, a miser, and an unfit mother each encounter a miraculous redemption through their connection with the little Jessica-and her answer to prayer.

A young girl, Marjan, rescues the fabled Shahrazad from the Sultan's wrath in this exciting and thought-provoking novel from Fletcher (Flight of the Dragon Kyn, 1993, etc.). With her crippled foot, Marjan never expects to be dragged off to the palace, but that is what happens after a chance meeting with Shahrazadthe storyteller who wins her life each night with cliffhanging stories for the sultan, and who obtains a story from Marjan. Heartbroken at leaving her Aunt Chava and her Uncle Eli, Marjan confronts cruelty within the palace's lush interior, where wives and concubines can be executed at the sultan's whim, and where the Khatun, the sultan's mother, spies on everyone. Dispatched by Shahrazad to find more stories, Marjan sneaks out into the marketplace, where she eventually finds an old storyteller who tells her the end of a story of which the sultan has become fond. Beaten and imprisoned by the Khatun, Marjan escapes the palace, only to return and tell the sultan an allegory that enables him to realize his love for Shahrazad, and to spare her life. Despite the licenses Fletcher takes with the story of Shahrazad, the novel may entice readers into the pages of Richard Burton's far richer work; they will appreciate the power of storytellingthat it may expand the soul of even the most hardened listener.Science:

I love your empty tomb craft! Very lovely!!!
ReplyDeleteYOU HAVE A BLUEBIRD!!! We had ONE bluebird investigating our yard this weekend during the rain - bluebirds were my grandmother's favorite! They are very special to me!!!
Your kite is very pretty! The tail especially! It looks very fun to fly!
Busy hands, indeed! And very talented! Well done!!! So creative!!! What will the star pattern pieces be used for? I am very curious! They are very interesting!
And so many very interesting duct tape projects. That bag is very handy - out of a cereal box! I would have never guessed it!!! That's cool!
The "star pattern pieces" are actually FLOWERS! and she is going to attach a metal pin to the back and sell them, as pretty pins to put on your shirt or coat, at our End of Year Party with LHE (small homeschool group). The Knitting Club sells things they have made and donate the money to different groups/organizations.
DeleteI love bluebirds too! They are very hard to find in this area (Indiana) and I usually on see about 2 a year. I was thrilled to find this one, imagine my surprise, on my own roof!!!! Amazing when you consider how few that are around these parts. Even at our farm in southern Indiana, some years I don't see any all summer long! They are gorgeous!
