Core G Week 20 "A"
Middle Ages
BiblioPlan Wk 6
Jan.18-23, 2016
66th Week on this Core
This is the felt figure Dd made last week of "Rey" from Star Wars, the Force Awakens.

I had a really hard time getting a good picture of it...

We had a pretty good week, and I kept Science near the top of our priority list.  I thought we had finished the Veritas Press assignments, but when I looked it again, I realized we still had a few more things to do before we closed the door on our three year study of the Old Testament.  But, on Wednesday we started our new book Veritas Press (VP) "Gospels" which started us off in the book of Luke.  Ah...it feels good to be back in the New Testament.

We did FOUR Science experiments this week! I think it helped that I made Monday and Tuesday "science" days, since Wednesday and Thursday are really packed with outside activities.  I will try to stick with that format as we go forward.

Dd had "chair testing" in band this week.  She is super excited to see if she got to move up.  She is in the last chair, and so she can only possibly go up!  What a good place to be!!  Choir class went well too.

Thursday was our homeschool co-op day, and we had a pretty good time there.  We invited the other new family back over to our house for lunch and a visit.  This was their third visit...so Heather L., I am trying to show others the hospitality you showed me how to do!  So thankful for our friendship!  You certainly have helped me to grow in that area, and I am glad.

Health wise...my GERD issues were awful this week, as I tried to go off of my meds.  I've been reading a lot, and am trying to find some supplements that can help me digest food and prevent so much heartburn and reflux.

SNOW...lots of shoveling!  But, today Dh managed to fix-fix the snow blower!!!  He was able to actually get it to work for a good while and then put it up when he was done!

8A, 8A, 8B, 8B, 8C, 8D, test 8--100%
We have spent two weeks on this lesson and Dd feels good about it, and tested well on it, so we will move on to Lesson 9 next week.

Speaking of math....I was talking to some other homeschool mom's about our math difficulties and we had a really good conversation.  With all four of us talking about it, I came to the conlusion that I don't need to throw in the towel on Math U See (MUS), (which I was thinking about doing) but accept that we are going to be going at this very slow pace for as long as it takes to get through Algebra.  Dd had moved through all the other MUS books so quickly that I was not sure why this book was so much more difficult that I was really thinking that we needed a new curriculum.  I'm glad that I had the opportunity to discuss our math difficulties with other homeschool mothers.

The things you will need for this experiment-

The hardest part of this experiment was getting the thread, two lengths of the same length, then taping them to the far side of the bowl of water.

They have to semi-close-together so you can lay a needle down on the two lengths of string and then slowly lower the thread into the water, which is also lowering the needle into the water.  The "goal" is to get the needle to stay on top of the water and float on the **surface tension**.

The book had a nice illustration

The needle would fall into the water repeatedly whenever she tried to get the thread off the needle

The needle floats well, while on the thread!

Ta-Dah!!!  She got the thread to stay on the surface and got the thread removed!!  It took about five tries.

The empty tweezers are the "CONTROL".  We put the tweezers in the water and see if that effects the floating needle...it doesn't.  Then put tissue paper in the tweezers and see if that effects the floating needle...it doesn't.  Then put gum in the tweezers and dip that in the bowl to see if it effects the needle...it doesn't.  Then:

About to try putting the soap into the bowl....

The tension is building....

As soon as the soap went into the water the needle stopped floating and sank to the bottom of the bowl.

I had watched various youtube shows on how to do these experiments and I saw this one that looked even easier than doing this trick with the thread.  Instead of thread, put the needle on a piece of tissue and lay them both on the top of the water surface.

For a few seconds the tissue and the needle all float happily...

The the tissue starts to slowly sink to the bottom of the bowl

The needle is left happily floating on the surface of the water.  Then you could do the experiment from here---without having to mess with the thread.  Add the tweezers, then add the tissue to the tweezers, then try the gum...lastly try the soap and watch the needle drop.  The point, again, is to see how soap can change the SURFACE TENSION.

Apologia General Science Experiment 3.1 A Floating Egg?

Apologia General Science
Experiment 3.1
A Floating Egg?

I'm here to help!!!

Ingredient list is pretty easy on this one---three glasses, water, salt, and three eggs.  The glass on the far left is ONLY water, the middle and the right glass have salt in them.

Easy putting the eggs in the glasses

This glass with water (no salt) is the "CONTROL" for this experiment. The egg in the glass, without salt, does not float...the egg sinks to the bottom and stays there.

The egg in the salt water floats!

We kept adding salt and testing to see what would happen--the glass on the far right we added more water, which diluted the salt water and the egg sunk.

Very salty water and the egg floats in the middle.
