Core F Week 12 "A" LOW Jan 13-18th, 2014

Core F
Week 12 "A" LOW
 Jan 13-18th, 2014

These snow pictures are from Tuesday - but we have 3-5 new inches already!  Can you believe we have new snow just since then?!?!?  We are getting more frigid temps (later in the week) to go along with our new snow.  I'm sure Dd will be taking new pictures soon, and then I'll post them.

Our feeders are up against the house, so you can't even see all the birds at the feeders eating---these are just the birds in the line!  There isn't even any food out there at this point.  I do put feed out there some days; but I hadn't for a few days when this picture was taken.  These are just the 'hang out' guys!

I have to crack up sometimes at the amount of birds that line up for meals around our backyard!!!

Can you see the one Mourning Dove on the string in the upper right section?  The string is weighed all the way down!!!  Isn't that so FUNNY!

Game 3
Meeting up with the coaches before the game-

Coach Monte & Coach John
Warm ups and reviewing the plays.  Our team has players in the 4th-6th grade.  #3 is in the 4th grade and is an amazing ball-stealer!  He can steal the ball from just about anybody out there...he is fearless; don't let his size fool you!

Dd did a good job this game handling the ball.

Blocking out her defender so she can get the rebound.

The ball is a bit too high, but she is showing no fear and taking the ball back to our court.  She did this a few times this game; which is an improvement from last year.

I thought this was a good picture to see most of the gym.  Many churches these days are moving towards having these types of churches--where they serve two purposes.  The sky blue area with the two wreaths section is where the minister and choir stand on Sundays, and where the game is going on is filled in with metal chairs.  This gym is actually where they hold church on Sundays.  It is dual purpose room.  We visited this church before and attended a service here.

Now that the pictures are out of the way; let's review our week--or as I like to call it: "The FLU Week".  We got more done than you would have thought considering how sick we were; but I like to read!  But, there wasn't a lot of "work" done by Dd.  She was willing to listen, and do math--so that is what we did!

Kendra had a funny question, did we have a 'flu' (as in a mild thing, kind of like a cold) or a 'FLU' (as in NOT eating, and all sorts of disgusting things happening to our body) and we had the latter - the "FLU".

We had to miss our only 2 activities of the week; which were both on Monday: Knitting Club (which only happen once a month), and basketball practice.  Dd was so disappointed, but didn't even give a second thought to arguing about not going--she was THAT sick!  if that tells you anything.

Read Aloud's:

The Pilgrim's Progress (Dover Thrift Editions) by John Bunyan

1) PILGRIM'S PROGRESS by John Bunyan, in it's original version/format.

Gone-Away Lake (Gone-Away Lake Books) by Elizabeth Enright

2)Gone Away Lake by Elizabeth Enright
Dd read this as a reader, and has really, really insisted we read this as a RA (read aloud); even if she has to read it aloud to me!!!  She just knows I will love it.  We finished chapter two yesterday and hearing about Julian and all his "collections" and fascination with bugs I already am liking it!  It reminds me of one of my favorite quotes--"It's not what you read; but what you RE-READ!" I don't remember who said it though.

I Rode a Horse of Milk White Jade by Diane Wilson

3)I Rode A Horse of Milk White Jade by Diane Wilson
We erally liked this book.  I know many people who might not like their children exposed to other religions would not like this book b/c this is set in Mongolia; and they are all about good luck charms and talking to horses....but, if you can understand that this is their culture and their time and use that information to understand them better, then you can really be treated to such a great book!!!!!  That really is what excels about Sonlight curriculum!  They are a solid Christian company; but they also encourage us to understand other cultures through books like these.  The main character Oyuna; was wonderful!  I really liked her so much.  I will miss spending time with her each day....which is always the sign of a good book!

Reader's:
Dd finished her scheduled Readers, and since this is a LOW- a week that we use to catch up on work that we fell behind on (we were behind on our EHN Notebooking pages and Best-Loved Folktales) Dd has been able to choose her Readers again this week.  She has really been totally absorbed in Greek & Roman Mythology.  We went to a book sale and added more books to our already pretty extensive collective of Ancient history books.  She was specifically looking for the stories of specific gods and goddess, and found them in her new book by Edith Hamilton.  So, she has been reading out of that book more this week than the on by Green.  It is really great to see her researching and delving into something that isn't Star Wars, LOTR, or Narnia for a change!  But, next week she will have to add in a SL Reader to her mix!

Tales of the Greek Heroes (Puffin Classics) by Roger Lancelyn Green and Rick Riordan

1)Tales of the Greek Heroes by Roger Lancelyn Green (intro by Rick Riordan)

Mythology, by Edith Hamilton, illustrated by Steele Savage by Ruth Hajilton

2)Mythology by Edith Hamilton

Audio:

The Mark of Athena (Heroes of Olympus, Book 3) by Rick Riordan

Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan-Completed

Poetry:

Classic Poetry: An Illustrated Collection by Michael Rosen and Paul Howard

This week's poet is:
William Blake
Classic Poetry: An Illustrated Collection by Michael Rosen
Nurse's Song
The Tyger

Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Kubla Khan
(I added this poet, and poem into this weeks schedule since we were studying Mongolia this week.)

another poetry book for children that I've really liked is this one:

A Child's Introduction to Poetry: Listen …

Science:

Exploring Creation with Zoology 2: Swimming Creatures of the Fifth Day (Young Explorer Series) (Young Explorer... by Jeannie Fulbright

WHALES
(We focused on baleen whales this week.)
Apologia: Zoology 2: Swimming Creatures of the Fifth Day
pg. 35-40
Dd is doing a good job on writing and drawing in her note-booking journal.  She is using this cheap, lined composition book much better than the fancy Apologia official journal I bought for her for the previous course.  I think because she has more space and more freedom to write and draw what she wants; how she wants.

Math:

Zeta Decimals and Percents Instruction Manual Math-U-See

Math U See: Zeta
14 A, B,C
*due to the flu, we didn't get math done each day--obviously!

Board Games:

Scrambled States by Gamewright

Internet:
 --Thanks Allie!!!
1)Secrets of the Parthenon (History Channel)
2)Pandora: I'm loving listening to Bach & Beethoven on cello this week; Dd is digging it too!

DVD's:
Being sick we watched quite a few...but the most 'educational' was EMMA!!!  We love this movie!  Wednesday we were so sick we couldn't move...so we just watched this movie all day!

Core F specifically:
World book,  EHN worksheets--Dd worked on her worksheets for about 2 hours this week.

I added in this book that I had bought for this core, it fit in perfectly this week as we focused on Mongolia-this book is a mini biography on Kubla Khan that gave a good overview of KK.:

Kubla Khan: The Emperor of Everything by Kathleen Krull and Robert Byrd

Fun Book:
Did you ever want to see what America looks like?  This is a pretty interesting book...sort of like the other books I showed last week that we add-in to study foreign countries--like Material World, How People Live, Hungry Planet, etc.  Those books show us a what the world looks like; this book shows us what our country; America looks like.  They even have a homeschool family on page 109 that my Dd liked from Illinois.  My Dd really liked looking at this book; she got it for a Christmas gift.

America at Home by Rick Smolan and Jennifer Erwitt

Amazon says:From the co-author of the New York Times Bestseller America 24/7.
The week of September 17, 2007, marked the largest collaborative project in Internet history as 100 of the top photojournalists and millions of Americans documented the concept of home. The result—which included several million photos—is the most extensive record of American home life at the beginning of the 21st century.
Now the powerhouse team of photographers and editors behind such bestselling titles as America 24/7 and the A Day in the Life of... series, present their latest collection of stunning personal and dramatic moments with this tie-in volume.
America at Home aims to capture the emotions of home: the distinctive rituals, ceremonies, traditions, intimate moments, and all the myriad ways in which we work, play, learn, conduct our lives, and interact with friends, family members (and pets!) as we transform our houses (and apartments, trailers, etc.) into our homes. From McMansions to mobile homes, from tree houses to tenement slums, from ranches to old-age homes, the public was invited to help document the harmonies and paradoxes of home life across America over a single seven-day period...
Highlights of this extraordinary project include:
Massive grassroots online outreach: Americans were invited to simultaneously contribute their own images via a series of daily snapshots each day throughout the week. These shots covered topics such as: morning rush, what’s for dinner, and evening family rituals. Participants received daily emails with assignment instructions and also took general photos of what makes their home special. The public was able to sign in and upload them at www.MyAmericaAtHome.com.
