Apologia General Science Module Six Experiments 6.3

Apologia General Science: Module Six:
Experiments 6.3

Experiment 6.3: Physical Weathering: The Power of Plants

This experiment did NOT work.  We should have placed the seeds down much deeper, much deeper.  All our roots stayed above the plaster and did not break it up at all!!!  You will see as you scroll down and see our seeds after a month.  Make sure YOU place your seeds deeper than we did.

We used the Star Wars Figure's plastic container instead of the plastic bowl the kit provided.  I thought it would neat to see the roots growing.  We needed plastic of paris, four lima beans, water, paper towels, and a spoon.

Dd measured out the plastic of paris, and then we added a little extra of that and the water to accommodate the bigger tub we are using.

Adding in the water

Dd put in the four lima beans, then we let it dry for an hour, and then placed a wet paper towel (actually two) on top of the plaster and seeds, to keep them moist.  Now we are waiting for the lima beans to grow.  I'll post a new picture when we get some results to show.  The roots will grow through the plaster and break up the plaster into many small pieces.  This is showing us the difference between Chemical Weathering and Physical Weathering.  This specific experiment is an example of Physical Weathering.  The lima roots will break apart the plaster, but not change the composition of the material like a Chemical Weathering would.

UPDATE: Two days later:

I've been keeping the paper towels moist every day.

The seeds have expanded!  They have broken out of the little divots they were put in when the plaster was wet.  The root has come out and it very short, but growing.

After one week

One Month Later:

This experiment did NOT work.  We should have placed the seeds down much deeper, much deeper.  All our roots stayed above the plaster and did not break it up at all!!!

 Experiment 6.4: Chemical Weathering "A"

Vinegar, limestone, a bowl, steel wool and time

Put a limestone rock in a jar, add vinegar to cover over the rock.  Our kit wanted us to use a bowl, but I liked this jar better.  You can immediately see the bubbles raising up from the rock.

The Point:
Can you see the flow of bubbles rising up?  The bubbles are the LIME leaving the rock!  This is a chemical weathering example, b/c the vinegar is changing the composition of the rock.  In the end this rock will not be a limestone anymore!

 UPDATE: Two days later:

We can really see the chemical reaction visibly on this experiment.  The vinegar is really eating at the lime in the limestone.  Good experiment.

I bought these rock kits from Rainbow Resource, and they are great for this module!

Learning about Sprouts, Kombucha, Keifir March 2016

Learning about Sprouts, Kombucha, and Kefir
March 2016

Sprouts are VERY easy to digest, and full of protein/vitamins/minerals...power house to help heal and recover our bodies. All you need is a few Ball jars, screens, water, seeds, a bowl, and some towels.  I bought my seeds at a local health food store.

We bought this screen from Lowe's, but we bought too tight of a weave; a "pollen" reducing kind that makes it too hard to get the water out.  I will try to buy a looser-weaved screen soon.

Red Clover, Alfalfa, and Broccoli seeds
Put one tablespoon of seeds in a jar, add water to cover seeds, and let soak over night--or about twelve hours--then drain completely

After draining the water out of the jars, then put your jars at an angle like this, in a bowl, cover with a towel and keep out the light.  Supposedly the light on the sprouts makes the sprouts taste more bitter.

Here my jars are, under the towels.  I water, rinse, and drain the sprouts two to four times per day while growing.

After 24 Hours, the sprouts look like this:

I will add a new picture soon, but the sprouts really took off and I'll be eating them soon!!  For more info, I went to YouTube and searched for video's on "Growing Sprouts" and found more video's full of information than I could watch!  Great resource.

Here is my update-- three days in jar:

Updated pictures below: We've been eating the sprouts and started making new jars.  This is a good thing, I don't have any problems with this--quick, easy, easy to digest, and nutritious.

Kombucha:
Another thing I am trying to help my digestion problems is Kombucha, but I can't drink too much of it b/c it does irritate my bladder, so I dilute it a lot and add it to my smoothies.

Can you believe my SCOBY has gotten this thick in just a few weeks!  I'm going to share a layer of it with a friend now that it is so big.  I'm sharing my Kombucha in the water bowls of the chickens and they seem to love it.

The SCOBY is weird looking!

New Batch

Milk Keifer:
A friend gave me her old grains, but she didn't think they were still alive.  I went ahead and processed them, but am very doubtful of this batch.  Next week another friend said she has some very alive grains that she will share with me.  Here is this first practice batch:

Lugol's Iodine Solution 2%:

As you know, I am trying everything I can to help my body get over using digestion medications.  This is another suggestion I've been told about.  I get ovarian cysts that erupt/burst and are SO painful, my friend (Michele) swears by these drops and how they resolve that problem---why not try it?  I could go for less pain in my life!  I researched this and found a lot of great reasons why I should be taking this---give it a look.

SL Core G Week 23 Middle Ages March 7-13, 2016 Vikings

SL Core G Week 23
Middle Ages - Vikings
March 7-13, 2016

Dd breaking up the melting snow as we pump out the water that has been accumulating all winter!

A week without shoveling snow!  Finally!  There is just a few little piles of snow on the ground, but a distinct feeling of spring in the air.

We had real difficulties getting our lessons done this week, but Dh had to work again this Saturday, so we got another day to help complete some things (but not all that I had scheduled).

Dh and I got out and voted; which is always a good thing to do.

Dh got the nut off his truck, but still has to put things back together, and that hasn't been going well.  He hopes it is getting closer to being done.

At Dd's 1:1 sax lesson this week with her teacher, Mrs. March, she told Dd that she can tryout the Baritone sax over the summer.  The girl that had been using it has graduated and she wants to give Dd a chance at it.  We had a chance to talk over the future and plans.

GERD: It has been two months since I went off my reflux, indigestion, and heartburn medications (they were found to cause liver disease), and I am finding more things this week to help. We found some seeds at a health food store, and I'm already growing three different types of sprouts--alfalfa, red clover, and broccoli.  I will make a post on how I'm growing them.  I went to YouTube and searched: "Growing Sprouts" and watched so many video's to educate myself.  The reason behind eating the sprouts is that they are much easier to digest than older plants, and pack as good, or better amounts of vitamins/minerals/protein.  I am dabbling in making my own milk kefir, but am afraid to drink what I made!!  My sample was very questionable, and perhaps not even alive.  I might be given a live sample next week, and I will try that for sure.  This weeks sample was very doubtful, and I was afraid if I drank it I would be sick!

Activities:
Band class -1 1/2 hours, Choir- 1 hr, LINK Co-op classes 3 1/2 hours, Library, Music Lesson- 45 minutes, walk in our woods- 1 hour, Girls Night-(played Minute to Win-It)- 2 1/2 hours, church...

Birds:
We saw two Whooping Cranes while leaving our street!  So close to our house!  Amazing!  Dd and I also saw a Pileated Woodpecker from our library/hs room window. Our normal birds visited the feeders.

Chickens:
Our chicks are all doing great and growing fast!  They are pooping like crazy and it is getting hard to keep their brooder house tidy! As soon as I put down clean towels they aren't clean for long!

Next week is our last LINK Co-op classes.  Dd just has one last assignment due.  I will really miss chatting with Michele, the woman I teach the KinderKids with.  She has really been helpful on giving me health advise.  But, I will be VERY glad to be able to focus more on OUR lessons again soon!

Next week Giz and Grampy are planning on visiting for a few days.  I'm going to try and wrap up the Viking book we are reading, math, and module six in our Apologia Gen. Science before they arrive, then we can focus on spending time with them.

Music:
It has been a really big music week.  Dd has been playing Billy Joel's, Piano Man, every day and really improving each time she plays it.  She has been seriously deep purging her bedroom and found her big file of piano music and has been playing like crazy.  Plus, after her excellent practice with Mrs. March she has been re-energized again.  Mrs. March passed two songs for her, from the new sax book, and gave her new music to work on.

Rosetta Stone: French
FIVE times this week!  Yes, I totally told her on Monday if she worked on French each day she could win a prize.  I've tried everything else, and nothing was working, so I had to pull out a carrot!  Plus, instead of making her do thirty minutes each time, I lowered my expectation to ten minutes per lesson (I know that once she gets started she stays on for a bit).  She was SO certain she wanted to study French, and then immediately after we bought it she wanted to learn German...If course we bought Levels 1, 2, 3.

Mystery of History: not exactly sure all we did as we listened as we drove this week; but oddly enough we had already heard all of it before.  Oh well, we got to hear about the Vikings again; which is our history focus of the week.
