Saturday we took G&G (Dh's parents) to Eagle Creek Park for lunch, and then they took us to a Chinese restaurant for dinner--I'll put some of the pictures from our visit with them throughout this post.
We had some great reading this week, that is for sure! Not just our Read-Aloud's, but also our audio's too. We went to the library two times this week, and Dd finished their summer reading program. She got a root beer scented pencil, a coupon to see the "Whitecapes", the GR baseball team, and a green shirt that says "MAD about reading". After not getting anything from Brownsburg's summer reading program for the last two years, it was great to her to actually get a prize! She sure does read enough that it always seemed silly to me that she (of all kids) didn't ever get anything!
Last Sunday we had gone to Kirk Park and spent the day in the water and sun, so I guess I should have expected last Monday to be "difficult", but I was unprepared. Dd was exhausted and tired all Monday, and it amazes me how much energy gets sucked out of me when she isn't doing well. We had a bit of a hard week, and by Thursday I was really running on empty. We only worked on our EHN on Africa one day, but at least we spent 4-5 hours on it, making a day of it. Those EHN pages really are hard, but very educational. We were suppose to wrap up Africa and move on to Australia on July 28th, but we didn't get all our "Week 32" done, and will have a LOW (left-over week) to finish up our left-overs from last week. We also didn't finish David Livingstone: Africa's Trailblazer by Dave and Neta Jackson.
We still aren't able to complete a normal day's work. Dh has been coming home for lunch each day, which is great, but we have to start prepping 30 minutes or more before he gets here, then we have the 40 minutes of lunch, then the clean-up after he leaves. I still haven't figured out how to compensate for all that time loss. I am thinking we might need to start earlier than we have been, but I also know that it takes Dd a few hours to wake up and shake off any morning fog she has. She is NOT a morning person! I am trying to contain my frustration at us not getting done what we should be able to get done. I know we are both just trying to adjust to all the new, new, new we are going through.

We finished A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 by W. Phillip Keller
(I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone. I had read this a few years ago, and wanted to share it's message with my daughter. It breaks down Psalm 23 line by line to explain each detail that a person back in David's time would have known and understood due to their culture, but that we modern people miss since we don't have any knowledge of it. It reminds me when I would sign (sign language) to my deaf friends, and say things that other hearing teenagers were saying, and that didn't translate to my deaf friends, b/c they didn't have the same lingo that we did....think of terms like "cool", "rad", "talk to the hand"....all these terms that WE get b/c we are living at the same time, in the same sphere of language. We just miss so much of the significance of the 23rd Psalm b/c we just aren't connected to the earth the way people were 2,000 years ago. The author was also a shepherd, and he puts in a lot of information that really helped us to understand more of what this Psalm was intending.

I went to YouTube and typed in "Long Walk to Water", and got a few different hits. One was a short ten minute interview with Linda Sue Park and the young man the book was written about, it was very helpful to see the young man in person and see some of his presentations to American's.

B/c Dd was having some confusion about our last lesson, we printed out worksheets each day last week and tried to solidify our understanding of Lessons 1-4 in our Math U See Pre-Algebra book.

Dh has been reading a book Dd picked out for him to read to us, from the library. It's on WWII, called: The Right Fight by Chris Lynch. It will probably takes us a while, but it has been very interesting.

We have heard 5 or 6 disc's of the 13 disc story...I am still unsure if I should recommend this as I read reviews that the ending might be weak. So far, the only family that I think will like this quirky sense of humor, would be Kendra and her boys. The book is almost 600 pages, so it isn't a quick anything! But, the vocabulary is spectacular! That same vocabulary is why one reviewer slammed it! It could be seen as vocabulary for vocabulary's sake! But, it is almost like a vocabulary fireworks show---bam, bam, bam...great word after great word, and I have to admit that I keep mentally stepping out of the story to think "wow, what a great use of that word.." which probably isn't technically good. I am still undecided about this book, but I do know that families that aren't allowed to breach Harry Potter due to it's touch with magic, won't like this book either. There are animals talking, and warring with one another...etc. But, it starts off where a 11 year old girl takes her baby (around 2 year old) brother out for ice cream and a walk in town and he gets kidnapped by a murder of crows!!! The crows grab, Mack, the brother, in their talons and beaks and fly away with him. So, Prue, the main character, big sister, has to go into the "Impassable Wilderness" to get her brother back before her parents find out. A classmate, Curtis, follows her into the woods.....and the story begins....
**I have to mention the narrator is Amanda Plummer...and she does a really interesting job with this material.
