SL Week 2 on Core E & Garden Highlights August 10, 2012

This post will have our lessons reviewed first; then the garden highlights second.

August 13-17th, 2012
Core E
Week 2

We fit in a lot of things this week: library, playdate with RL, book sale downtown, and we worked at The Giving Tree (our church's food pantry), and went to the Children's Museum where we visited the Science Port and Science Labs doing experiments at both!

I am really glad we had officially started working at The Giving Tree for our church.  Our church has a real "store" on Main Street in Jamestown; that is run by our church with all volunteers.  The food is all donated by our church or anyone who donates food or money to buy the food.  People needing food can come in and show they live in the area; and can get free food, and other supplies every two weeks.  Considering how many people; especially children that are going hungry these days- it feels great to tithe money and our time to such a great thing.  It is great for Dd to start volunteering at a young age and learn the value of being a good person that gives back to the community.  I am so happy to be able to do this with her; it is a blessing to us.  We look forward to our nights that we work there.

SL IG work mainly was a continuation of the books we started last week.  We covered Bible, William Wilberforce, Moccasin Train, Thee, Hannah, Sounding Forth the Trumpet--etc.etc.  I get tired of writing the SL books as we read many of them week after week.

Our electives & add-in's:

Piano! Dd had a very big piano week.  She played each day; to my enjoyment!

Some highlights from our garden this week.  It was so nice Sat. 8-10-12 that we harvested some of our kohlrabi, turnips, tomaotes, green peppers, gourds, blackberries, etc. and Dh planted 4 new sections in the garden with our fall crops.

Indiana State Fair 8-9-12

Indiana State Fair~ August 2012

This is almost the same year Alls Chambers tractor we use at the farm (ours is a 1954)--can't you see me driving it?!  Our paint job isn't as shiny as this one's!  But, orange none the less!

This is Grampy!!!  One of my favorite people~

This is the one photo Dd wanted me to keep on the blog, out of all the animal pictures she took.  I don't have a lot of memory space on the blog (or so blogspot.com tells me) so I've cut out some of my pictures after they have been on the site for a few weeks.
This lamb was 8 days old!! born at the fair!

We always go to the DNR building and see the fish, birds, and nature exhibits.  This year there was a test on your birding knowledge.  They would show you one feather and have you write down which bird you thought it went with--and the bird would be found in Indiana.  It was really fun to do.

We always enjoy the Bee/4H buildings, goats, horses, donkeys, goats, pigs, water preserve--where you can get all the free well water you can drink, tractors, and an elephant ear to finish us off!

Started Core E Aug. 6-10th, 2012 Week 1

We started Core E with Sonlight (SL) this week.  We did Core A: Intro to the World: Cultures in 2008,  Core B: Intro to World History (year 1 of 2) from the beginning to the fall of Rome in 2009, Core C: Intro to World History from the fall of Rome through modern world history in 2010,  Core D: Intro to American History from the beginning to the 1850's--finished May 18th 2012!  We took a lot longer on Core D than the other cores b/c I was really enjoying learning all we could about early American history.  I learned so much!!  We also needed to spend more time on our electives this year as we had practiced many of Raymond Moore's 'better late than early' ideas; especially on spelling and grammar.  Now it is August, and we have started Core E: Intro to American History 1850--and on!  I am hoping to do a better job fitting in our electives without having to take as many "Left-Overs Weeks" (LOW's) as last year.  We have been doing SL for 5 years now!  Wow!

As we continue on with SL, we will continue staying on the same curriculum as last year.  Our Math will be Math U See (MUS), Teaching Textbooks (TT), and Life of Fred (LOF).  Language Arts: First Language Arts (FLL), Writing With Ease (WWE), All About Spelling (AAS)---more on that later--- I better get to entering our weeks work

We went to the Indiana State Fair this week and had Giz and Grandpy (mil/fil) visit for 2 1/2 days, so we didn't get a lot done...but we had fun and ate really well!

Read Aloud:
We finished our Lamplighter book: "Narrow Escape" by Christoph Von Schmid---so good!

Dd finished "The Year of the Rat" by Grace Lin.  Grace Lin also wrote "The Year of the Dog" that Sonlight had recommended as a 'summer reader' and Dd liked it so much she picked  the next book as her prize for finishing the summer reading program at our library (each kid got to pick one new book to take home with them!)  Dd really does read and read and there is no way to post all the books she reads and many are graphics or Marvel Adventures- Spiderman-Geronimo Stilton- Thor-Star Wars-and only take her an hour to read, so I don't keep track of that kind of thing.

The Year of the Rat by Grace Lin

in progress: "Anne of Green Gables" adapted by Margaret Dekeyser.  Dd has heard the whole unadapted version with me on audio at least once or twice; but this is her first time reading it alone.

Anne of Green Gables by Margaret Dekeyser, L. M. Montgomery and Jerry Dillingham

Story of the World 3--we finally finished, which is good b/c we are due to start Story of the World Volume 4 with Core E!!  We read Chapters 36-41 this week!

The Story of the World: History for the Classical Child, Volume 3: Early Modern Times by Susan Wise Bauer

Math:
MUS Beta Test Booklet page 13 & 14
MUS Delta : 22 A,B,C,D,E
LOF: Edgewood: Chapter 11 & 12 (and she snuck ahead and read some of 'Farming')

Grammar:
AAS 3: Step 21
FLL:  Lesson 82 and 83

Sewing with Giz:
Dd made 2 baby blankets with ribbon trim for JC's new baby and for my BM's baby.  Giz brought up her sewing machine, so the going was very easy.  They had a good time sewing together.

BrainPop & BrainPop, Jr.  as always--and we love it!

Science SL - week 26 page 136 and Week 27 page 137.  We are attacking science with a toothpick, but it is progress!!

NEW books we've started:
William WIlberforce, Sounding For the the Trumpet, Moccasin Trail, Oxford Illustrated Book of American Children's Poems, American Tall Tales, (Dd was *suppose* to start By the Great Horn Spoon, but she has already finished it.).  Dd is also on week 2 of listening to "Wee Sing America" a cd that has all these great patriotic "American" songs, speeches, etc. and Dd is just crazy for this disc.  She has listened to it over and over and over.....ad nauseuam.

Bible:
Starting Strong--aloud.
Matthew-aloud
Luke-Dd reads

Dd has been cooking--especially her incredible grilled cheese sandwiches, and she made a wicked lemon zinger tea that was so good.  She took a ton of photo's at the State Fair, and really loves photography.  She has been "training" Sophie our dog....that dog deserves a medal for how great she is with putting up with all her lessons.  It has been another really good week for Larkin doing her chores without any fuss.  She even did a few that I didn't ask her---gasp!  It was her idea to clean the handrailings on the staircases; which I had thought to put on her chore list; but hadn't done yet!  and she did it!!  She had a harder week this week with doing her lessons.  She did her math and grammar with Dh at the kitchen table on Monday night b/c she was a stinker with me during our lessons.

Here is a sampling of Dd's face painting masterpieces---she did so many that we didn't photograph.  You wouldn't believe how many she did, to me, to Dh to her legs, her arms, her face---oh boy!
