Science Exploring Creation General Science, Experiments 4.1 and 4.5

Science Exploring Creation General Science,
Experiments 4.1 and 4.5
Agnes got bored doing the experiments and moved to the cake lid for some quiet!  She is still a good science partner.

As we tried to balance the opposing quarters, she had to roll the pencil closer to the "resistance" as the weight got heavier.  This was more interesting than I first thought it would be.  We started with one quarter on each side, then added more and more quarters (one at a time) to the "resistance" and still tried to make it balance.

We went over first-class, second-class, and third-class levers.  I drew the examples for each lever in Dd's workbook and had her diagram their specific "resistance", "effort", "fulcrum", and "levers".  We had a really good time on this chapter---not finished yet, but it has been good.

Experiment 4.5: A Simulation of A Series of Pulleys:
We got all the things ready, but it didn't take long to realize we needed a third person to be able to do this experiment, and we couldn't do it.  But, we were able to watch it on YouTube- we watched this one, and recommend it:

Sonlight Core G Week 20"C" BP Week 5/6 Middle Ages Feb. 1-7, 2016 67th week on core

Feb. 1-7, 2016   **Middle Ages **
Sonlight Core G Week 20"C"  (67th week on core)
BiblioPlan Week 5/6

This was a very light schooling week, so Dd and I spent a few hours on Saturday getting a bit closer to where I had aimed to be by the end of the week.  We really needed a light week, but all-in-all it really didn't feel like it was as 'off' as I had hoped.  It amazes me how much time I loose by us doing TWO activities a week.  I won't drop band; that is such a blessing.  The other activity we are doing again is the local homeschool co-op we are doing for another ten week session (six weeks to go).

Updates: GERD is doing better, but I can't have any dairy (besides yogurt/keifer), or grains.  I am basically eating lots of veg and fruit, nuts, and a little meat.  The bonus is that I've lost some weight, but, the bummer is every time I've tried a little dairy I start getting heartburn, though yogurt (plain greek, Fage and plain keifer) doesn't bother me.  Dh made a fantastic clam/Tilapia chowder--that I can't eat...so not fair!

Dh's truck is still not running.  He is having a really rough go of it.

Social: Band/ Choir, co-op, Friday was "Girl's Club," Library twice this week, a co-op friend, Michele, came over on Sat. and brought us Buff Orpington chicken eggs, and church/Sunday School on Sunday.

CHICKENS/EGGS:(Buff Orpington)
Thursday, Michele let me borrow her egg incubator that her husband had made about twenty years ago.  Then on Sat., she came with the eggs, had a little visit and left.  Checking on the eggs and preparing to turn them, before bed, I noticed the eggs were SUPER hot!  I looked at the thermostat and it was close to 120 degrees!!!  I worked hard to get the temp down, and got Dh to see if he could figure something out.  We came to the conclusion the fan was not working.  Dh and I drove to the Farm store, no fan...Best Buy...no fan, looked for a Radio Shack--couldn't find it; looked for a second Radio Shack---couldn't find it; went to a Wal-Mart---no fan!!!  Dd stayed home to tend to the eggs. We went home and I messed with the eggs until I put just enough ripped paper towels on them that they would stay between 99-101 degrees--good for the night.
Sunday, Michele, called me and told me that I surely over-heated the eggs and she wanted to take the incubator back and have her husband fix it so we could try again.  Dd and I are without eggs again; after one night of enjoying the challenge.  Hopefully we can try again soon, and have better luck?
Dd is so excited and can't wait to for us to start building a chicken coop with me!!  We have LOTS of books and idea's to ponder.

Bible:
Psalm 141: on of my favorite and most used verses: especially this  bolded part:  As a person who really needs to think before I speak, I rely on this verse often.
I call to you, Lord, come quickly to me;
    hear me when I call to you.
May my prayer be set before you like incense;
    may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice.
Set a guard over my mouth, Lord;
    keep watch over the door of my lips.
Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil
    so that I take part in wicked deeds
along with those who are evildoers;
    do not let me eat their delicacies.
Let a righteous man strike me—that is a kindness;
    let him rebuke me—that is oil on my head.
My head will not refuse it,
    for my prayer will still be against the deeds of evildoers.
Their rulers will be thrown down from the cliffs,
    and the wicked will learn that my words were well spoken.
They will say, “As one plows and breaks up the earth,
    so our bones have been scattered at the mouth of the grave.”

But my eyes are fixed on you, Sovereign Lord;
    in you I take refuge—do not give me over to death.
Keep me safe from the traps set by evildoers,
    from the snares they have laid for me.
10 Let the wicked fall into their own nets,
    while I pass by in safety.
As a person who really needs to think before I speak, I rely on this verse often.

Science:

I think this has been another successful week of getting our Science done!  So glad!!!  It is hard for me to put Science ahead of history, but we've been lop-sided for too long.

Cooking:
Tuesday was Dd's kitchen day.  I wasn't feeling well, and thought this was a great opportunity for Dd to get in some good cooking time.  She made grilled chicken and steamed broccoli, using a Cook's Kitchen cookbook recipe.  She made jello, and has made too many smoothie's to count this week!  She made dinner for her and Dh on Thurs, and Fri.---some kind of 'wrap' with hummus, spinach, diced celery and carrots, etc. They both really liked them!

Fun Books:

I've checked out about ten books on chickens, and how to build chicken coops, and Dd is very keen on reading them.  She's read more than I have!  I better get busy!
