Sonlight Core H Week 1B Oct. 3-9, 2016

Sonlight Core H (1500-Present Time)
Week 1B
Oct. 3-7, 2016

Hello Friends!
This week, and next week will be less academic as we take advantage of this fantastic weather and get *some* of our painting projects worked on.
I'm still putting layers of paint and polyurethane on the floors and two stairwells...almost done.

We have been in our new home sixteen months now and are still trying to repair rooms enough to use all the rooms in our house. In the spring, we were all so focused on chicken tractor building, and just taking care of those cute little chickens, we didn't get a lot of house jobs done. I have wasted perfect weather days, that I should have used for chores, choosing instead to focus on our lessons.

We got all the wallpaper off this section of hallway in the basement...and Kilz'd!

I really have to balance doing our schooling as well as house chores and repairs. I'm trying to prepare myself for another week, and potentially our last fairly warm week, of this fall to finish painting the basement bathroom.  I need to give myself permission to not panic about getting enough homeschooling in every week throughout the year! I think we have technically already put in our 180 days of schooling and could theoretically take off the rest of 2016...which is nice to know, but that is not why we work so hard!  I'm hoping I can get a lot accomplished this upcoming week, and wrap up my painting for the season!  Then when the weather is cold and snowy I can sit back, relax, and hunker down to getting more academic things done! And, I am looking forward to getting some knitting and crocheting done too!

You can see some of the old wallpaper that was under the old light fixture.  This room had three layers of wall paper to remove!

After we removed the wall paper we Kilz'd the walls in the basement bathroom.

One thing that has helped us to work AND get some house work done is that we have been listening to two audio's this week!  Dd does very well with fully comprehending audio material, as she is an auditory learner...with a visual mom!
New light fixture that Dd picked out for the basement bathroom.  We still need to buy the specific light bulbs that match with it, but these bulbs will work until we do.

House:
This week has been focused on the basement bathroom, but we have got a lot of little things done also--shutters for the chicken coop, major fall cleaning of the coop, water buckets scrubbed clean...tried to put up the pool thermal blanket, but after I laid it out to dry it rained for two days!  now it will be a big job for next week!  Inside we worked on floors/stair wells, walls in basement, bathroom in basement...never ending....

It had a lot of prep work needed to get the walls ready for paint.  After all the Spackle and Kilz, we finally have started the light blue paint!  We put up the new light fixture in the bathroom too.  We still have paint 3/4th's of the room, but at least we are progressing.
We've only got this one corner painted blue so far in the basement bathroom.  I plan on hopefully finishing the painting next week?!  We spent the week getting it ready for this part.

Dh's chicken coop work:

Dh finished putting up the shutters in the chicken coop!

Patio Doors:
We have ordered new patio doors to replace these damaged ones that are literally falling apart!

It will be three weeks until our new doors arrive---hopefully we won't be putting the new doors in while it is snowing!
Music:
Last week we were coming to our final decision on whether to return the Baritone Sax or agree to pay the new fee to use that instrument; which was $80.00 a year, and Dd decided to give it back.  Perhaps if we had been told that there was going to be a fee before we accepted to play that instrument in Intermediate Band it would have changed things.  But, it felt kinda wrong to be told after she had it for 2 months that we owed money.  Dd says she feels God helped her to move back towards the Alto Sax as the right decision for her musically.  She enjoyed playing the Baritone Sax, and was glad she got to try it for a little while.

As she was getting over the strife with the Baritone, Dd was blessed in another music avenue.  She had been saving up her money to buy a flute, but we just found out the man that sells used flute's charges double what she thought he would...and she was going to have to put that wish aside and save longer.  That was a month or so ago, this week one of her best friends was able to buy a new flute and therefore sold her old flute to Dd!  And Dd could afford it--I think she must have got special pricing....so she has been playing the flute since Wednesday! Oh my!  I'm glad she has clicked on hitting the notes and sounds beautiful.  So, there was a blessing after how well Dd handled the Baritone situation.

Not sure what "Call of Duty" is---Grampy thought it was a Star Wars poster!

Chickens:
Last week our "Broody Brenda Lee" really had deteriorated and needed some intervention.  Her comb and waddle were totally pale white, she wasn't eating or drinking, her poop was a small 1/2 teaspoon of fluid--yellowish green--and no substance to it, and she was so light.  I had to take her to our house and put her up in our garage.  I brought her in to hold her and hand feed her a few times a day.  I was really worried about her!  By Friday her comb was getting back to a pale red again, and she was pooping again.  I was able to re-introduce her back to the group without too much difficulty.  I stayed outside with the group and helped transition her, as "Toes," our alpha hen wanted to peck her and dominate, but I finally took Toes and put her inside the garage for 30 minutes to let Brenda Lee get comfortable with everyone else, then I eased Toes back in and didn't let her get too close to Brenda by feeding them all some special treats to keep their minds off the re-entered Brenda.  It worked really well and they are all getting along really well.

I spent about 4-5 hours cleaning out the coop, from top to bottom.  I cleaned out all the straw, swept, and then used the Shop-Vac to get all the dust and dirt out.  I swept and vacuumed the walls, floors, ceiling, lights, and ceiling fan.  This is one clean coop!  I still have to laugh at the silly poster Giz and Grampy bought for the coop---they *thought* they were buying a Star Wars poster, but got this instead--not sure what it that poster is for!

Church:
We are still enjoying our new church very much.  You never know when you move how long it is going to take to find a new church, and how well you will fit in.  We really are doing so well with the fellowship here, and I am so thankful for such a loving congregation!  Two families have invited us into their homes for a meal; which is a record for us!  We really need to invite people over to our house and share a meal too.  The first husband and wife that had invited us to their house after church for Sunday lunch invited us out for a mini-tour of the area this Saturday (10-8-16).  Dd had been invited to spend the night at her friend's house, and another girl as well, and she chose to go there instead of the tour with us.  But, Dh and I spent half the day with the "A's."  They took us to a meat shop that is owned and operated by a family in our church, then an Amish Cheese store, an apple orchard/ice cream shop, and lunch before that!

Dd's Sleep-Over:
Dd has two girl friends that she sees on Wednesday's music classes, but this week they also had a group sleep-over.  They had a great time and I'm glad she has found good Christian friends here.

Our lessons this week:
Note: I have decided to add Trumpeter of Krakow and The Hawk That Dare Not Hunt By Day into our "Week One" schedule, so we are expanding our "Week One" for more than one week.  I especially like adding in Church History and important people in church history into our Sonlight (SL) schedule which extends our cores beyond their design.  After using Sonlight for a few years I gained confidence to bend SL to meet our personal family interests, to better suit us specifically.  We've been using Sonlight since Kindergarten (Core K) back in 2008.

Bible:
Veritas Press: Gospels
Card 124: The Trial of Christ
This week we researched the Trial of Christ by comparing:
Matthew 26: 57-27:26

Mark 14:53-15-15
Luke 22:66-23:25
John 18:12-40

We read each section with our Bible and then with our Believer's Bible Commentary.  Adding our commentary has really added so much more information and context than just reading our bible alone.

Our ladies Sunday School finished up the Beth Moore, Breathe, book and we have started Priscilla Shirer's, Gideon, study.  I really, really enjoyed Priscilla Shirer's, Fervent, book (https://www.amazon.com/Fervent-Womans-Serious-Specific-Strategic/dp/1433688670/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1476106760&sr=1-1&keywords=fervent)

Fun Picture Book Dd checked out this week:
January's Sparrow

**We love (and own) many Patricia Polacco books, and encourage people to read her books.  They may be "picture books" but they never fail to teach me something--or feel something too!  Highest Recommend I can give!
