SL Core 100 Week 6Feb.18-24, 2018

SL Core 100 Week 6
(High School American History Year)
Feb.18-24, 2018
Our local county was declared "state of emergency" this week,
and Dd working on sax duet with Olivia

Hello, Friends!

We had rain and rain and rain here in Michigan; so much that flooding has been a huge problem locally.  So glad we chose to live up on a hill, on a hill!  We've had to take alternate routes into our town, to go to the library and other shops, because the flooding has covered roads.

This is normally a green field, under the water is another white fence!  In the summer it is part of the 4H grounds.

Doc's Office/Illness:
Dd's swollen tonsils were still bothering her, so on Thursday, I took her in again to have them looked at.  We didn't get the same person, but, the RN that we saw was very clear that Dd was out of the woods.  Dd asked to get her flu shot as she is so tired of being sick!  Hopefully, she will be healthy for a while!

Lots of flooding in our area.

Friday Night Sleep-Over:
Dd spent the night with her friends on Friday night---the goal was to practice for a competition coming up, but they also had a lot of fun!

This is another green field that flooded so much it cut off the main road to our house; luckily there is a second way back to our home.

Chickens:
Happy to report with the warmer weather, although wet, I've had the chickens outside in their safe, small, Inner Sanctum coop.  The chickens mostly look horrible; especially the  Black Sex Link girls---they really have been molting a lot and their feathers look poor.  I'm still hand feeding Ms. Lemon and the other weak looking girls.  Zeus, is still being a bugger, but, I still somehow like him too much to do anything than keep trying to let him know I'm the boss to his attacks, but he seems to have too small of a brain to remember for more than a few days.  I'm impressed with how well all the girls have laid all winter long!  The man we use to buy eggs from, when we had to live in the apartment,  has a flock that decided to stop laying in late fall.  He is still having to buy eggs.

They actually look great on!

Satyr horns:
Dd and her two band friends are wanting to make satyr costumes, for fun.  Dd has already made one set of horns, and had a *great* time making them!!!  How fun!

German Shepherd Puppies:
Friday, Dd spent Friday night with Olivia, to practice their duet that is coming up.  Meanwhile, her church buddy texted asking to borrow a nose syringe; their dog was in labor!  She asked if I could go over and help deliver since her mother was home alone and not an animal person.  Well, I had the best time!  As I approached the door, two feet came out!  After the second was delivered the rest of the family came home.  I wasn't sure if I was needed anymore or not, and decided it was probably better to not wear out my welcome and left at that.  It was a great experience!!!

Barred Owls back:
Can you see him above the fence?  He, the owl, is in the middle of the picture and up a tad.

I refilled the neglected bird feeder this week and by Friday we had a Barred Owl perched 10-20 feet away from it---hunting our friendly friends.  I enjoyed watching it and think that it might not have been lucky, as I didn't see any attack.  I *think* I heard a robin this week; which would be a wonderful sign of the upcoming spring.

SL Core 100 Week 5"C" Feb. 11-17, 2018 Valentine's Day

SL Core 100 Week 5"C"
Feb. 11-17, 2018
Valentine's Day!

Hello Friends!

Dd's Strep Throat started to feel better by her second day on antibiotics, though her throat still looks bad, the white spots from the strep are healing.  Dd felt better each day, but I still fought the flu and having a low temperature through the week and am still fighting with my immune system.  We did lessons on Saturday so she could finish up Week 5.

Valentine's Day:

I always think of Heather L. throughout the week of Valentines.  She made me a gift of a crocheted red heart on a pin to wear as a brooch one year, along with a card that said. "You Are Loved."  I just loved that special gift and will remember (and wear) it fondly as one of my favorite all-time gifts.

Another year she made Valentine Cards, brown paper with a red plaid fabric cut and glued to the front, in the shape of a heart.  She does such a great job of sharing God's love with those around her.

Church:
We all missed church this Sunday (Feb.11th), even if we had all felt good the wicked snow storm was enough to keep many families home!  Our church did cancel evening services due to the snow.  I'm really enjoying our "Ladies Sunday School," as we are doing Beth Moore's Entrusted bible study.  I was asked to lead next Sunday's lesson as our normal leader will be on vacation, so I did a lot of extra studying this week to be sure I'll do a good job.  I'm still so thankful for finding a good, loving, welcoming, 'your part of the family' kind of church.

Chelle's Recommended Listening/Reading:
I've spent the past month reading Just As I Am by Billy Graham, an autobiography.  Chelle also recommended a podcast of Susan Wise Bauer promoting her newest book: Rethinking School, interview with Andrew Kern. I liked the podcast so well I listened to it twice!  Thank you, Chelle, for all the recommendations you list on your website: Last In Line blog.  Our library got in the book (Rethinking School) for me by the end of the week so I can look at that soon.  I think I'll need to put the Just As I Am to the side to get to the two library-borrowed books you recommended (Rethinking School and Gray Matter).

Chickens:

Despite the snowy and cold weather at the beginning of the week; we did have some sunshine by the end of the week so I could let the chickens outside.  The girls are laying really well this winter.

I'm keeping them in the caged area, which isn't very big, but there they are completely safe from predators. You can see the area that is all caged in, where they are in this picture.  I call that closed-in area, "the inner sanctum."  The area just outside the inner sanctum, where the snow is still on the ground, is the "top run" and the area at the back, with snow too, is the "bottom run."  Predators still attack the girls in these fenced-in runs.  I'm trying to figure out how I can make the runs safer.  Last summer/spring/fall I had a big umbrella open that made them safer.  I'm still trying to come up with a new idea to help keep them safe so I can let them have more run area.

I'm still coming up with special meals for Ms. Lemon every day--and the most pitiful-looking chickens too.

Sewing/Cushions on Sofas and Thankfulness:

I've got both armrests covered with the material now, only the sofa's armrests are left to do. I'll get a picture up soon.

I'm still working on sewing the sofa's armrests, though I got all the cushions completed last weekend.  They almost look presentable enough to invite someone over again!  Living with one salary, as a homeschool family, we do a lot of making do with what we have!!!  I remember reading something a few years ago about how God doesn't want us to feel impoverished, and I remember thinking that I *should* be thankful for all we have, but also hoping for that feeling of being perfectly taken care of.  Our pitiful couches have made me feel a bit 'impoverished,' as well as my limited clothing.

Finished...for now!

But now, our couches are looking better with their new covers!  And, thanks to an awesome local thrift store, with prices well below Goodwill and Salvation Army, I also feel extremely blessed and fortunate with all that the Lord has done to provide for our needs.  Just this week I found brand new (tag's still on) dress pants for Dh, at such a fantastic price and a few other pairs that were in terrific shape for him! Dd and I have also been very blessed with finding treasures there too.  It just shows me how God does take care of us, and that we do need to be VERY patient!  He might not answer right away, but, in His time, he will provide!

Dh's Work:
Dh is still working crazy hours, working late day after day, and a lot of Saturday's.  Prayer's appreciated for things to turn around for him.  Praying he gets help with his workload and we would get to see him more often.

Academics of the Week:

Dd used the Treadmill 2 x this week

SL History:
A History of Us, Book 2
Ch's 15-28

Reader:
Amos Fortune by Elizabeth Yates: Completed

Agnes and Dickens

Add-In Read Aloud:
A Separate Peace by John Knowles: Completed
This was a book I read in high school and remember how much it moved me, so I wanted to read it to Dd.  I went online to find teaching notes through "SparkNotes,"  I just Googled: "Spark Notes" and then typed in our book, it was free and had a thorough chapter by chapter summary and analysis.  I'm glad I found this resource; it brought up things that I hadn't put together and I feel like we understood the book better because of it.

Agnes, on top of the world!

Science: Apologia Biology, Module 2
We had finished reading the chapter last week and had two more viewing sessions to watch on the DVD set for this week.  I like the DVD set that I bought to go along with the other materials, although I really thought the cost was too much.  I was hoping that by reading the material, discussing, doing the student notebook, and watching the Video Instruction DVD ($150.00) that Dd would ace the test....well, that didn't happen, even after spending a month on this one module.  The one positive was that Dd seemed truly disappointed in her test results.  I'm going to hope that the next module will have a little more interest to her and will be more attentive.

Fun Books:
Ahsoka (audio) by E.K. Johnston: In Process

Winter by Marissa Meyer: In Process

Looking For Alaska by John Green: In Process

Cooking:
Dd wanted to make Egg Rolls, but our grocery store was out of the wraps, so she used Wonton wraps instead.  She filled the wraps with cabbage and diced carrots and then cooked them in a skillet with oil.  She did a good job and continues to learn new things.

Music Classes:
Intermediate Orchestra: Violin: They had a substitute teacher this week.
Intermediate Band: Alto Sax

Private Lessons:
Violin lessons with Christie
Piano lessons with  Wendy
Practice: goal of 2:30 hours each instrument
A much better week for Dd and her music!  She especially focused on piano this week, my favorite!

Art Classes Through Grace:
Painting Studio (2:00 hours) Watercolor landscape

Botany Painting: 1: 30-hour class

Dd continues to do a lot of drawing and painting during the week.  Art seems to be her thing this year.

Dd and her two friends are working on an idea to make satyr costumes, and therefor Dd is drawing a lot of satyrs!

Melting Again:

The snow measured up to the belly of the snowman gage, but by the end of the week, the snow was down to 7 inches!  Love those warm, sunny days!  More sunshine forecasted for next week!
