Greek Study

week at our Greek Study)
Jan.12-17, 2015
Sunday Jan 11th, we tried a new church near
our apartment buildings. The church we
had been visiting was 30 minutes away, the roads were covered in snow/ice, so we decided perhaps we
could try a more friendly and closer church!
This new church was very friendly!
We had quite a few people come over and shake our hand and ask our name. ETA: We went back again this week! Such a good service!
We ended last week with me having a fever, and then for
this week Dd and I both had a fever each day until Thursday when Dd was finally
free from hers. With both of us not
feeling well, it was hard to get our lessons done. Dd was so sickly that she couldn’t think and
we had to postpone some of the harder material until she felt better(Monday and Tuesday were her worst days, Thursday and Friday were mine). But, she started feeling better on Thursday,
and that is when my migraine started to kick in. Friday, I was able to do our bible study, and then
my migraine got too bad and I had to go to bed…for the day. Dd said it is “good” that I have migraines
because then she has to do “independent study” and do all our assigned things
on her own. She did a really good job
and figured out most of the list/IG page I had made, and she walked our dog for
all the daytime walks. I was really glad she was able to do so much of her work alone this week. But, we still had to do our last page of math for the week on Saturday.
We had a really good “Nature Hike” week on the trails
around our apartments. I do see how the
Lord worked things out for us here more and more—the woods, the recycling,
being so close to the Aldi grocery store, close to the downtown library…I do
feel thankful for those things.
HOUSE: There is no new news regarding our house in Indiana...right now is the wrong season to be selling a house!!!! I'm praying for it to sell, and for a new home for us---asap!
VAN: Well, my van is back from it's THIRD trip to the expensive automotive repair shop. I'm glad! Now we can go somewhere again!

MICE: Just an update on the mice in our apartment…we
haven’t had any! Praise the Lord! I
think we have gone three weeks now!
SNAIL: Well, another week of the snail living! We have all sorts of tubes sticking out of
the tiny tank…but it seems happy! The
smell is getting better too--- I think Chelle was right when she said that
perhaps we were over-feeding it, and the food was gunking up the tank. Thanks, Chelle!

Dd took a cardboard pencil box and covered it with duct tape, then covered that with her favorite quotes from various books.

She is crocheting a “camo poncho”.
She made me an AWESOME blue crocheted hat (like she made
for James and Andrew).
She made granola from scratch.
She made her own stencils to make herself a “Camp Jupiter”
shirt, she wanted one for Christmas, but didn't get it (or a Camp Half-Blood shirt); so she made her own!

Giz sent us a “Dog Coat”, but it needs Velcro sewed on to
fit Sophie specifically, Dd has started on that.
Worked all week on a letter to her Indy friend, Shiloh—mailed.
ME: I am knitting a blue scarf for me (same yarn that Dd
used to make my hat). I completed the
red cardinal bird that I had been working on for Aunt Ruth. Now if I can get myself motivated to go to
the Post Office and mail it!

I don’t know exactly how many years Dd has been into Percy Jackson and the Greek myths that come along with his series, but she has been focused on this topic for years now. As Rick Riordan (the author) continued to write, she continued to follow. We were scheduled to study the Greeks with this Sonlight Core (Core G), but we are doing it in a much extended way. I think it will take us about another two weeks to complete the book that I have decided on continuing (The Book of the Ancient Greeks, and the Teachers and Students guides that go along also.). I have heard of other homeschoolers taking two years to do this core, but I hope we don’t take that long.

We are continuing to extend our card in Veritas Press:
Chronicles Through Malachi. Since VP
didn’t list any specific chapters to read, we are going through the book bit by
bit.

We are wrapping up our review of the lessons we have
completed in our book. I copied out the “A”
page from the lessons we were to review on a blank page so Dd could watch the
presentation and re-do the lesson. Some
of the lessons were not available online, at the Worksheet Generator site that
MUS offers! It appears that after
Pre-Algebra there isn’t a worksheet generator available! That is disappointing as I really do use that
site often. Dd re-did the following
lessons:
10, 11,12,13, & 14
She will do the review for lesson15 on Monday and then
Tuesday we will start again with NEW material…our review being completed, and
ready for the last half of this material.

minutes, and is a good summary of the events going on around the world.

We have had a bit of trouble with this book, since Dd had
read and then listened to the audio of Rick Riordan’s Greek Gods, many of these
stories are not new to her, and many times we have already heard the story
repeatedly. This is such a great book,
filled with such LOVELY illustrations, but, we have already passed much of this
information. We will continue to go
through it and search for new information.

SUCH AN AWESOME BOOK!!!!!!
I found this book so much easier to read than the book
before this one—Black Ships Before Troy.
This was a very good version of Homer’s epic tale of the story of
Odysseus.

much information regarding the Ancient Greeks, and their artwork. This is a very good resource—and a FREE

Happy Golden Years by Laura Ingalls Wilder: completed
This is a terrific audio!
LOVED it! This is a continuation
of the Little House on the Prairie/Town stories. Mary goes to her College for the Blind, and
Laura studies and then begins her teaching career. Almonzo generously takes her home from her
teaching post each weekend. The house
that she is staying in is very stressful, as the mother of the house is half
insane (at one point, Laura wakes up to this woman yelling at her husband in
the middle of the night, with a butcher knife in her hand! Laura refused to go to sleep that night, for
fear of her life! Gasp! Almonzo slowly
grows on Laura, and in the end she agrees to marry him! He builds her a home, on his stead, and we
leave the newlyweds on their porch looking to the future. This is probably the saddest one of the
stories---Laura, our favorite home-body, leaves home for good…sniff. Sniff.

Weekly Schedules
When we extend our core out, we use Sonlight's "Additional Schedule Page"(s). I make one for me, and the things we do together, and I make one for Dd, for the things she will do alone. This week, with Dd not feeling well, she didn't have a lot of things on her solo page. But, then Friday while I had a migraine she had to do the items on my page by herself.
