Time: 1300-1600's

Hello Friends! 
We officially started Core H this week.  Core H covers World History from 1600's to Present Day.  Sonlight assigns 36 weeks, but I've added a few books to the line-up and that will take us longer.  I have two books added in, as Dd's Readers before she will start with their current first Reader.  But, I'm getting ahead of myself!  This week we started *some* of the items listed for us to complete on Week 1, but we will be spending a few weeks on Week 1, so there is no rush!

Overview of SL Core H, Week One: History

Week One still has some events from the 1500's, but we do step into the 1600's as well.  The Story of the World covers the empires around the world, The Dutch Revolt, and The Queen Without a Country--which is Mary, Queen of Scots.  Our Kingfisher assignments cover the Decline of Spain and Dutch Independence.  The Holy Roman Emperor Charles V gave Spain & Netherlands to his son--Philip.

Our assigned Reader is set in the 1540's, and about Spanish Conquistadors.

Some history highlights:

1492 Columbus

1503 Leonardo da Vinci finished the Mona Lisa

1508 Henry VIII ascends to English Throne

1511 Desiderius Erasmus publishes In Praise Of Folly--which played an important role in the beginnings of the Protestant Reformation.  The message of the writing is to look at the superstitious abuses of the Catholic doctrine and Roman Catholic church.  I am not sure which specific abuses he was upset most about, perhaps it was the taking of Indulgences? The idea/concept of Indulgences was thought up by Albert Brandenburg, who needed money to buy a position (job) in the church office. Note that jobs were not earned, but bought by people who had money, not a moral disposition.  Albert's idea was that people could buy spots in heaven--for their family, friends, and themselves, though the cost, I'm sure, wasn't cheap!  If the church agreed with his plan he would split the income with them, 50/50, and they would both benefit.   

Church & Movies:
On Sunday (Sept. 25th) Dd was sick and had a fever, so she missed all the classes.  Though she didn't feel good, she seemed quite content watching dvd's on the sofa!  We watched the new Kung Fu Panda 3, and I think I liked it the best out of the series.  It had a really good message about "finding out who YOU are."  It wasn't a Christian movie, at all, but it did have a really nice message about being yourself, and finding out your own individual strengths.  I really liked it, personally, and found it encouraging.  She also watched Heaven Is For Real, which we had been wanting to see.  I found it interesting, but wouldn't really recommend it too highly.  I thought the father, who is a minister, and his wife, felt very shallow.  The characters felt empty, but the story was enough to keep me watching.  I wasn't inspired, encouraged, or moved by this one...nothing like other Christian movies recently.  The War Room really was so much easier to recommend!!!  Dd finally perked back up on Tuesday, and recovered.  

Olympians Program at Church (Wednesday): (1:30 hours)
Dd was better in time to co-lead the Olympians game-time with her new friend, Hailee.  They seem to really be enjoying figuring out which games to play with the kids, and being in charge of it.  I'm glad to see her taking a leadership role, and giving back to the church and younger kids.

Art Prize: (6 hours)

Tuesday a friend from church called and invited Dd and I to go see "Art Prize" with her and her daughter.  This was a spontaneous invite, and we were so happy to accept.  I put a small post before this one showcasing some of the art we saw around Grand Rapids, but we probably saw 30-40 pieces for each picture I took.  Words don't really encompass how much I enjoyed this day!  The only downfall is that the crowds were very heavy, and kept growing as the day went on.  I feel like we had as much an official tour of downtown Grand Rapids, as I did the art!  Also, another bonus was that the Gerald R. Ford Museum also was open and had exhibitions inside so that we got to see the museum and art at the same time, and I've been wanting to see that museum!

House:

Painting was not an option this week, due to the cold and dreary rain that didn't break for long.  Perhaps next week, with the possible sunshine, I can get something accomplished.

Music:

Unexpected turn of events for Dd's Baritone Saxophone. The band program changed their procedure of loaning some instruments, to charging those students $80.00 per year.  This was truly unexpected, and came as quite a shock.  Dd prayed about the decision; knowing we would pay if she chose to keep the Bari, but finally felt God directing her towards playing her own Alto Sax in the Intermediate Band.  Her teacher called and encouraged her to stay with the Baritone, but I think the die has been cast, in her mind. This was a big part of our discussions for the past two weeks, and hours of thought and debate (internally and externally).
Alto:
Now that Dd has decided to play her Alto Sax, she has to learn the Alto's part in all the music she had learned with the Bari, which is completely different.  She seems up for the challenge.  She seems to be clicking with her piano practices and lessons right now.

Prayer Request:
To my friends, I ask for prayer for my mom as she has not been doing very well these past two weeks.  I'm careful to not say too much, but she and my sister need prayer.

Bible:
We are still finishing up a Veritas Press Bible, "Gospels," and so are actually going to be doing two bible programs for another month or two. I've bought some other bible programs to add-in after we complete this.

"Judas Betrays Jesus A.D. 30"
We read the following sections with our bible and our Believer's Bible Commentary:

Matthew 26:47-56
Luke 22:47-53
Mark 14:43-50
John 18:3-11
Each of these sections are specifically on Judas Betraying Jesus.  It is very interesting to compare each gospel's version, and see what each add or contribute that the other versions don't mention.  I really have enjoyed these comparisons.

IEW SWI B: Lesson 8: Story Sequence: Completed
It has been two years since we finished SWI A (Student Writing Intensive A) and using other writing programs, I wanted to an easy refresher, so I bought the next step in their program, the "B", which says it's for middle school grades, but Dd is doing a great job with the material, even if it is labeled for younger grades.  I really wish things didn't have "grade" levels!  I plan on getting the next level, which is 'high school' after we complete this set.

History: (8 Hours)

Reader: The Trumpeter of Krakow: by Eric P. Kelly
This use to be in Sonlight's line-up, but they took it out, but I thought I'd go ahead and read it since I had already bought it.  I try to buy as many Sonlight books as I can find used, and then I'll have them for the upcoming cores, the downfall of this is that Sonlight changes which books are in their cores every few years...foiled again!

BiblioPlan Companion:
Ch. 26: The Printing Revolution & Florence Renaissance (After reading this for 1:30 hours, Dd reminded me that she had already read this chapter alone!  oh well--I enjoyed it!) The interesting part of reading of Florence's Renaissance was that Dh was in Florence while she was reading it!
Ch. 27: The Protestant Reformation: This is a SUPER chapter on church history...indulgences...etc.(not completed---read for an 1:30 hours)

Since Dd is stuck with where she is in her Teaching Textbooks Algebra section, Dh is having to tutor her on the evenings that he gets home early enough to do so.  Plus, some evenings he has to do projects on our house, before winter arrives.  So we are taking a different route right now in our math.  Usually we just do one program, but right now we are improvising!

Our old grill totally died, the legs rusted through bottom and the top handle rusted off, so we can't get the lid off anymore...we had bought it at a garage sale, and really got our money out of it!  We had to actually go buy a NEW grill this time.  Dd put it together all by herself: 1:00 hour

Foreign Language: Duolingo: German 40 minutes this week

Dd is using a free app to learn German.  She really disliked the format of Rosetta Stone, so we are giving this app a chance.  Dh is now also using it to learn Italian...and he is a fan as well.  They are trying to get me on it too!

Sonlight Core H Week 1A

I hate pictures of myself, but my Dd is trying to encourage me to stop deleting pictures of me so she will have some pictures to look at after I am gone....humbling to see pictures of yourself, especially when you have your shirt on inside-out! Dh brought us home new earrings from his trip to Italy.  This is Zeus, our rooster, who loves being loved!  And my mom will get a laugh out of the rubber band on my wrist...just like my G'ma!

Fall Gardening:
Dh has planted some fall seeds--turnips, swiss chard, radishes...He had to put the chicken tractors over the seeds b/c the chickens just love getting into our beds and eating everything they can.  We are going to need to fence in our garden next year, for sure!  But, these new seeds should raise our nitrogen and improve our soil for next summer.  Dh is always thinking ahead, and preparing for the next year.

Art Prize: (6 hours)

We learned how to patch a hole in our drive-way...thanks to watching a bunch of YouTube video's!!  I didn't take a picture of it once we finished...but, it turned out nice with the bags of blacktop patch--gravel in a soup of flexible black goo.

Dh had to buy a new chisel to make the edges clean, but ended up not needing it as we had two others already...we were over prepared for the prep work, but ran out of the bags of the black top and had to run into town to the local hardware shop to buy three more bags.  The bonus of us having to run back into our local store was that though it was $2.00 more per bag, their chainsaws were on sale!  Guess who came home with a new, much needed chainsaw?! Me!  Dh finished up the drive way by himself while I got to cut up some trees that had recently fallen into our yard.  Then I managed to find a few other trees that had already fallen and needed to be cut smaller to pile up.  It is amazing how much work you can find when you have a new saw!  We had been searching for a new saw for about 3-4 months now and I am so glad we got one; as the old trees on our property love to fall in the worst places!  We did a lot of cutting in the spring, and that is when Dh's saw broke, and he is still trying to fix it.  

We used this Paver-Base to fill the hole up, leaving two inches for the black top to go on top of that.

House:

Here you can see the large marigolds that I grew from some seeds my mother-in-law, Giz, had given me in the spring.  Boy, her seeds were just amazing---I have marigolds all over the place!  Behind the marigolds are the volunteer acorn squash.  After I had planted my garden with my chosen plants, these viney things kept popping up everywhere, Dh wanted me to throw them in the woods, but I thought I could plant them in the area beside our raised bed and see what came of them.....well! come to find out they are acorn squash and they were VERY fruitful this year.  I'm glad I kept them, and that I really enjoy eating acorn squash as we have many of them!  

Math: (5 hours)
