Week 8 "B"
January 19-21, 2015
Focus on Greeks- Week 3 (so far)
This is our 21st
week on Core G
We are about half way through Dorothy
Mill’s book entitled: The Book of the Ancient Greeks; with Teacher’s Manual,
and Student Manual to go along with the thick book. I like how after each chapter the Student
Manual has two pages of fill in the blank questions for us to answer (similar
to The Greenleaf Guide to the Old Testament).
This book is really an in-depth study of the history of Greece; not for
the casual study of the area! I am
guessing it will take us another two solid weeks of working on it to complete
the material.
Besides focusing on the Greeks, we
focused on Language Arts and Science this week.
Dd had finished Daily Grams 7 and so we moved to Easy Grammar Plus this
week. Unlike Daily Grams, I will be
working with her to complete each page and check the answers with her each
day. I have to tear out her worksheet
each day, and then place it back in the book afterwards since I need the
material that is written on the backside of each page. I could have (probably) bought a “student
book” that had all the worksheets separate, but this way saves a little
money. This week we focused on
Prepositions, (I focused on Prepositions last week to get her ready)
Interrogative / Demonstrative Pronouns, and Friday we focused on Helping Verbs.

Science this week continued with
Exploring the World of Physics by John Hudson Tiner. Last week we read and watched video’s on
Motion and the Laws of Motion. I really
wanted to make sure this material is absorbed and not just skimmed, so we
completely re-read those two chapters again this week. We also went forward one chapter
Gravity. These three chapters have
covered Aristotle, Galileo, Isaac Newton, and Johannes Kepler. I found some good video’s on YouTube to go
along with the LAWS we were studying.
The Invitation to the Classics book that I recently bought was helpful
in looking up a concise synopsis on Aristotle (and the other Greek Thinkers).
I honestly don’t feel like I covered
enough material this week. I had such
high hopes of fitting in some Latin and beginning our other new book: The
Fallacy Detective. There just isn’t enough
hours in our day. Dd isn’t a morning
person, starting earlier than 10 AM isn’t beneficial. Plus, since Dh’s work is close by, he has
been coming home for lunch with us.
Although I am so glad to have him come home (so I can feed him a very
healthy Tracy Super Salad, I have to admit, it is very difficult getting Dd
back on track after he leaves. This week
Dd wasn’t feeling well—still has the fever from last week—and her motivation
was more in line to making Lego worlds than Latin! I guess I should just try to happy that we
moved forward even though she was truly puny.
Her snail, Opis, is doing GREAT! She moves around all over the tiny tank very
quickly! We really think she has grown
already!! Dd is asking for another snail
to keep her company (wouldn’t it be great if we had baby snails!).
Dh’s work is extremely busy—and he rarely
gets home before 7PM. But, he really is
much happier here than in his last place.

This week I went back to my doctor and am
trying a new medication for my migraines.
Let’s hope this medication can turn things around for me! That would definitely help us be more
productive with our homeschooling. I had
a migraine on Monday and Tuesday, and a headache on Friday; so I am sure that
probably held us back some too.
There is a showing at our house in
Indiana on Saturday; and we are really praying that it goes super well! It has been on the market since July!!! Eventually someone must see how fantastic it
is!
Dd and I went on three nature hikes this
week with our dog, in the woods and on the trail by the apartments and
highway. The snow here doesn’t go away,
but just goes and down in depth. I
really like looking at all the critter steps in the snow—and trying to guess
who made each track.
Enough of the chatting---here is what we
completed this week in our Home school:
Just like we are taking a “bunny trail”
on our Sonlight Core G to focus on the Greeks, we are taking a “bunny trail”
from our Veritas Press (VP) Bible Program (Chronicles Through Malachi), to
focus on the book of Jeremiah. VP had us
read a section from the Survey of the Bible about the book of Jeremiah instead
of reading the book of Jeremiah. I just
didn’t feel okay with that—so we are on our third week studying Jeremiah, and
still have probably two weeks more material to read through with our Bible and
our Believer’s Bible Commentary.

Well, this is the sequel to WILDWOOD (which I thought was totally awesome; especially due to the superb vocabulary), but, unlike Wildwood's audio, this one was narrated by the author and not Amanda Plummer. I have to say, Amanda Plummer did a FAR superior job, and as a result, we are having a hard time getting into this sequel. So, if you haven't haven't listened to Wildwood yet--I highly recommend it!

Hands:
LEGO Week!!
With LEGO, she has made a Ranger’s
Apprentice, “Halt’s Cottage”; and she made a “medieval village” set as
well. The Medieval village has blacksmith
shop, Inn, bakery, stables, vegetable stand and barracks.
She did some keyboarding some this week; various songs.
She has made a new rubber band bracelet thing this week too.
She has been crocheting on the brown and
gray piece this week.
Cooking---she baked fish, made “sushi”—but,
with cooked fish, seaweed, avocado, and brown rice filling (very good!), she
made eggs, baking soda biscuits, and make a chocolate cake!
