Frozen Lake Michigan
Kirk Park
March 12, 2015
The "stairway" was covered in snow for over half of the walk, you can see where the first steps are finally usable in this picture. |
See how thick the ice is! |
Sophie was so happy to play and roll around in the sand and snow! Then she wanted to cuddle up with me! Such a great dog! |
In this picture you can see the footsteps from people previously walking on the ice. It was way too thin to try that while we were there, but interesting to see that people had done so. |
And a good day was had by all...and the dog slept the whole ride home! And we listened to Story of the World (SOTW: Ancients) on our drive there, and back again, so I wouldn't feel guilty about taking half the day off our lessons!

Was it so warm that your daughter didn't need a hat?
ReplyDeleteFascinated by these pictures!!
And great that you had a lovely day out.
This was around the fourth day, or so, of warm weather during the day, but it still was cold at night and there would be light re-freezing. I think Lake Michigan was about 80 percent frozen, all the way across (Lake Michigan 57,800 sq km, 22,316 sq miles in size, is the largest freshwater lake (totally within) the United States. It is 307 miles (494 km) long and 118 miles (190 km) at its widest point. The deepest point is 925 ft, while the average depth is 279 ft.). I'm sure that 10 feet of water you see Dd standing in, beside the shore, was frozen solid just a few days before our thawing. The melting was super fast--extraordinary! The temperature was still very chilly, but the sun was so warm that you felt fairly comfortable. The sun had not had any warming effect for MONTHS. Last week was the first time in so long that you could actually feel the warmth from the sunshine. It was really interesting to us too!!! So good to see a message from you! I've been enjoying your book lists on your blog---such a great resource for me as I figure out our details!! Thank you kindly!
