This was a hard week for me--I'm under the ocean in my head; or at least that is how it feels from behind my eyes.  Having a whole week of migraine or being threatened by a migraine is NO FUN!  But, Dd and I managed to do our lessons and keep to our fairly normal routine.  I was able to push through the day, and then after 5 or 6 PM I would be on empty.  

Dd, herself had her turn with the nasty cold that I had last week.  This week was hard on her, and she actually asked to skip going to Swim & Gym because she was "empty".  She has nothing in her...poor kid.  I know just how she felt; since I had that last week.  We are ready for some healthy days--and soon!!  Thursday, after our field trip, my head was so bad I had nothing left in me--and asked Dd to do her math (that we wouldn't do any formal lessons that day together).  Well, my dearest child decided her books were calling her; NOT her math.  I asked my darling husband to get her to do her math when he got home--he apparently forgot.  So, on Friday when I asked if she ever did get her math done on Thursday, the answer was a weak, "no...".  So, we had a chat about the topic of "self-discipline" and she has to do her math page on Saturday instead of having the weekend off.  But, I wanted to be sure to share with you all how we are very much like every other homeschool family in that we struggle; and battle with the 5th Commandment on a daily basis (wish it wasn't daily though...).

Monday night she had her basketball team's pizza night and their coaches game them each a personalized trophy.  Her trophy was for "Best Offense".  She just cared about getting an opportunity to eat and play with her friends.

Tuesday night the Upwards Basketball - Liberty Baptist Church that holds it, had their awards night, and gave each of the athletes a bag with "Upwards Basketball" on it.  It has strings on it, so you can wear it like a backpack.  She had fun seeing her friends for a second night in a row.

Thursday we had a great field trip; to Benjamin Harrison's house in downtown Indianapolis.  He was our 23rd American President.

No poetry this week; this week we focused on Science and Paul Cezanne.  I have a particular fondness for Cezanne; so we spent at least 20 minutes each day (or more) reading and discussing Cezanne except for Thursday.  We read two good books on Cezanne; which was as many as Dd would allow!  She did a good job discussing Cezanne's style and getting it.  We also took the week off Spelling; since we finished AAS 5 last week - I figured she could use a reward week off.

This was just a really good book.  It took us the whole week to read; taking it a little bit at a time the way we like to.  But, it really shared all the basic's of his whole life...basically.  If I had to pick ONE book, this would be it b/c it really gives a good whole picture of who Cezanne was; although the second book shared more of his personality.

This book was good in showing the heart of Cezanne.  It had bigger photo's of him, and bigger sized copies of his paintings--for a Children's book.  I also like how this book showed Cezanne and his friend Pissaro both painting from the exact same spot; and how TOTALLY different their paintings were; they showed them one on top of the other, so we could compare and see for ourselves.

Art Lessons by Eleanor Schick
good little book about a young boy whose neighbor is an artist, and invites him to draw with him--at the zoo, at the park, here and there...and everywhere.  Although it is a "picture book" it really is for older children, or teens.  It guides you HOW to look at things, when you are going to draw.  How to look at your environment and wait to think about what you are going to draw...etc. some really good concepts about approaching drawing.  It is just a simple little book; and very short--with a good message.

*You might wonder if any of these books are her Sonlight Readers, and they are NOT.  She is ahead in her Readers.  Next week (Week 18), she is suppose to have Rickshaw Girl as her Reader; but someone suggested that I do that one as a Read Aloud, so we did that together this week (and completed it).  So, I am letting her continue on with her Rick Riordan / Greek & Roman interest until we leave India and get into her new SL Readers.  She reads very fast, and I don't want her to read the Readers for countries we haven't gotten to yet--so I'm not going to let her read ahead.  The Sherlock Files was a Sonlight Reader, it was called The 100 Year Old Secret;

  and she liked it so much she wanted all the books in the series; and she just finished the last book; book 4.  So far that is all of the books Tracy Barrett has written in this series.  The Missing Heir was published in 2011, so perhaps she is working on book 5?  My Dd really enjoyed these mysteries VERY much!!!  If your dc liked the first one; you could see if your library has the rest of the series, like we did.

Following Narnia-our IEW writing program, that we've been struggling with...and taking baby, baby steps with...
Lesson 3: Completed (3 paragraphs on Janis-one paragraph on Setting/Who/What/When/Where, one on Plot/Problem, one on Climax/Resolution) She finished her outlines, then her draft, and finally her FINAL DRAFT is complete and we can move to Lesson 4 next week!  I think it took us about 2 or 3 weeks to do Lesson 3!!! eek!  But, we really did it very well, and thoroughly.

Fun activities:
Piano week!!! Finally! I was blessed with hearing Dd play again!  It had been a LONG time!  

BIG LEGO week...the rainbow loom has not been played with in a few weeks; duct tape has...and marshmallows and toothpicks have!  

Cooking:
Cooking happens practically every day with Dd.  She just is too picky for me to deal with.  When she was younger if she didn't like what *I* cooked, I gave her the option of a peanut butter sandwich; so she quickly took to the stove!!!  She has been making these wheat tortilla, egg, goat cheese wraps lately--and for any meal!  She made granola from scratch yesterday; and that was super good!  We made our "chicken finger" meal on Wednesday together.  She made the potatoes; washed, cut open, and put in loads of butter, and put in oven.  That is all I can remember off the top of my head.  Oh, and Saturday she made Lemon Bars from scratch...delicious!

My funny story for the week...so it has been SO COLD here--and on Tuesday morning the radio had just said it was 6 degrees as I was washing dishes.  Dd and our dog, Sophie walk by with a heap of blankets, heading for the back door.  Dd says they are going to eat their breakfast outside in the sunshine...with a BIG smile on her face!  How could I rain on her enthusiasm?  I tell her to have a great time, and keep the temperature to myself; smiling back at her.  They go out, and I keep doing the dishes.  Twenty minutes later she comes back in, "refreshed"; but says that it isn't as warm out there as you'd think!  She tells me that it is actually pretty cold!!!!  I had to tell her that I already knew it was cold, that the radio said it was 6 degrees; but I didn't want to discourage her from going outside.  She seemed glad that she still had gone out.  I regret not getting a picture of them out there...that would have been a great photo.  The weird thing about our weather this week was that it was so bright and sunny; but the temperatures were so bitter.
