SL Core F Week 17 Feb 24-28, 2014

SL Core F
Week 17
Feb 24-28, 2014

This was a hard week for me--I'm under the ocean in my head; or at least that is how it feels from behind my eyes.  Having a whole week of migraine or being threatened by a migraine is NO FUN!  But, Dd and I managed to do our lessons and keep to our fairly normal routine.  I was able to push through the day, and then after 5 or 6 PM I would be on empty.

Dd, herself had her turn with the nasty cold that I had last week.  This week was hard on her, and she actually asked to skip going to Swim & Gym because she was "empty".  She has nothing in her...poor kid.  I know just how she felt; since I had that last week.  We are ready for some healthy days--and soon!!  Thursday, after our field trip, my head was so bad I had nothing left in me--and asked Dd to do her math (that we wouldn't do any formal lessons that day together).  Well, my dearest child decided her books were calling her; NOT her math.  I asked my darling husband to get her to do her math when he got home--he apparently forgot.  So, on Friday when I asked if she ever did get her math done on Thursday, the answer was a weak, "no...".  So, we had a chat about the topic of "self-discipline" and she has to do her math page on Saturday instead of having the weekend off.  But, I wanted to be sure to share with you all how we are very much like every other homeschool family in that we struggle; and battle with the 5th Commandment on a daily basis (wish it wasn't daily though...).

Monday night she had her basketball team's pizza night and their coaches game them each a personalized trophy.  Her trophy was for "Best Offense".  She just cared about getting an opportunity to eat and play with her friends.

Tuesday night the Upwards Basketball - Liberty Baptist Church that holds it, had their awards night, and gave each of the athletes a bag with "Upwards Basketball" on it.  It has strings on it, so you can wear it like a backpack.  She had fun seeing her friends for a second night in a row.

Thursday we had a great field trip; to Benjamin Harrison's house in downtown Indianapolis.  He was our 23rd American President.

*See my posts from last week to view the pictures the books we use for our bible program; I've posted them a lot on our previous weeks' posts.

No poetry this week; this week we focused on Science and Paul Cezanne.  I have a particular fondness for Cezanne; so we spent at least 20 minutes each day (or more) reading and discussing Cezanne except for Thursday.  We read two good books on Cezanne; which was as many as Dd would allow!  She did a good job discussing Cezanne's style and getting it.  We also took the week off Spelling; since we finished AAS 5 last week - I figured she could use a reward week off.

Artist of the Week:
Paul Cezanne

Cezanne (Famous Artists) by Antony Mason,

Famous Artists-Cezanne  by Antony Mason
This was just a really good book.  It took us the whole week to read; taking it a little bit at a time the way we like to.  But, it really shared all the basic's of his whole life...basically.  If I had to pick ONE book, this would be it b/c it really gives a good whole picture of who Cezanne was; although the second book shared more of his personality.

Paul Cezanne: A Painter's Journey by Robert Burleigh

Paul Cezanne- A Painter's Journey by Robert Burleigh
This book was good in showing the heart of Cezanne.  It had bigger photo's of him, and bigger sized copies of his paintings--for a Children's book.  I also like how this book showed Cezanne and his friend Pissaro both painting from the exact same spot; and how TOTALLY different their paintings were; they showed them one on top of the other, so we could compare and see for ourselves.

Art Lessons by Eleanor Schick

Unrelated Art book-- Picture book:
Art Lessons by Eleanor Schick
good little book about a young boy whose neighbor is an artist, and invites him to draw with him--at the zoo, at the park, here and there...and everywhere.  Although it is a "picture book" it really is for older children, or teens.  It guides you HOW to look at things, when you are going to draw.  How to look at your environment and wait to think about what you are going to draw...etc. some really good concepts about approaching drawing.  It is just a simple little book; and very short--with a good message.

Meet the Great Composers: Book 2 (Learning Link) by Maurice Hinson

Composer of the Week:
Stephen Foster
Meet the Great Composers, Book 2
He is the composer who wrote: "Oh, Suzanna..."
We went to youtube.com and listened to about 7 songs by various artists...instrumental and some to words...and one sung by Johnny Cash! a very prolific artist!

*You might wonder if any of these books are her Sonlight Readers, and they are NOT.  She is ahead in her Readers.  Next week (Week 18), she is suppose to have Rickshaw Girl as her Reader; but someone suggested that I do that one as a Read Aloud, so we did that together this week (and completed it).  So, I am letting her continue on with her Rick Riordan / Greek & Roman interest until we leave India and get into her new SL Readers.  She reads very fast, and I don't want her to read the Readers for countries we haven't gotten to yet--so I'm not going to let her read ahead.  The Sherlock Files was a Sonlight Reader, it was called The 100 Year Old Secret;

The 100-Year-Old Secret (Sherlock Files) by Tracy Barrett

and she liked it so much she wanted all the books in the series; and she just finished the last book; book 4.  So far that is all of the books Tracy Barrett has written in this series.  The Missing Heir was published in 2011, so perhaps she is working on book 5?  My Dd really enjoyed these mysteries VERY much!!!  If your dc liked the first one; you could see if your library has the rest of the series, like we did.

(The 3 bolded songs, are some of my favorites.)

Fun activities:
Piano week!!! Finally! I was blessed with hearing Dd play again!  It had been a LONG time!

BIG LEGO week...the rainbow loom has not been played with in a few weeks; duct tape has...and marshmallows and toothpicks have!

Cooking:
Cooking happens practically every day with Dd.  She just is too picky for me to deal with.  When she was younger if she didn't like what *I* cooked, I gave her the option of a peanut butter sandwich; so she quickly took to the stove!!!  She has been making these wheat tortilla, egg, goat cheese wraps lately--and for any meal!  She made granola from scratch yesterday; and that was super good!  We made our "chicken finger" meal on Wednesday together.  She made the potatoes; washed, cut open, and put in loads of butter, and put in oven.  That is all I can remember off the top of my head.  Oh, and Saturday she made Lemon Bars from scratch...delicious!

My funny story for the week...so it has been SO COLD here--and on Tuesday morning the radio had just said it was 6 degrees as I was washing dishes.  Dd and our dog, Sophie walk by with a heap of blankets, heading for the back door.  Dd says they are going to eat their breakfast outside in the sunshine...with a BIG smile on her face!  How could I rain on her enthusiasm?  I tell her to have a great time, and keep the temperature to myself; smiling back at her.  They go out, and I keep doing the dishes.  Twenty minutes later she comes back in, "refreshed"; but says that it isn't as warm out there as you'd think!  She tells me that it is actually pretty cold!!!!  I had to tell her that I already knew it was cold, that the radio said it was 6 degrees; but I didn't want to discourage her from going outside.  She seemed glad that she still had gone out.  I regret not getting a picture of them out there...that would have been a great photo.  The weird thing about our weather this week was that it was so bright and sunny; but the temperatures were so bitter.

Sonlight Core F Week 16 "A" LOW

Sonlight Core F
Week 16 "A" LOW
(LOW means "left overs week" as in- completing the assignments we didn't get done from the weeks before, and catching up!  We do fall behind, and we also need to fit in extra's as well.  We also had a busy week of activities scheduled.)

A lot of our snow melted; then it snowed again!  But, then it melted again.  I took a picture in the middle of the process.  We are suppose to get another big snow this weekend.

Our activities for this week:
Swim and Gym started back up!!!  We drive down to Plainfield Parks & Rec. for a homeschool class that is half gym class; followed by a swim instruction class.  The past 2 sessions were lifeguarding instead of swim lessons; but now we are back to swim lessons; and Dd is happy about that since she has been missing doing laps.  This activity is every Tuesday for 8 weeks, and we do it in the spring and fall each year, and have for years now.
Duct tape house that Dd is working on---not sure about the details...

On Thursday Dd had her last basketball practice; followed by her last game on Saturday--which they won.  This is put on by the "Upwards Basketball" organization, and they only have teams up to grade 6, so Dd has officially retired...at age 11...how sad, sad, sad...  She played super well, and handled it all really well.  Her coach was ready to cry b/c his son, also a 6th grader, also was retired.  They played together, on the same team, for the past 3 years, with another player as well.

Thursday during the DAY we had our LHE co-op classes.  Dd has 3 classes: Mission to Mars, Gym, and Drama.  Then we eat lunch there before we return home.  We got to bring a family (minus the sick mother) with us to the co-op, so it looked like I was the mother of 5!!!  It was a lot of fun having a packed mini-van for once!

The silver circle on the wall is for holographic imaging and messages--from one of the movies..Dd knows all about it; but *I* am a bit fuzzy on the details.

For things being built this week:
Dd rec'd new duct tape this week; a shiny silver! So, she taped over her previous sword and daggers to look like a real metal with the new tape.

Then she built new things with toothpicks and mini-marshmallows.  I'd seen 2 different classes building things last week while at our LHE co-op and told Dd about them; then bought the marshmallows.  One class built a Gumdrop Dome (out of gumdrops and toothpicks) and another class -the Dr.Seuss class- built funny things out of straight spaghetti and mini-marshmallows.   Next I want to buy some big skewers, for her to build with, with more marshmallows.  I've looked at theses:
Zometool 1 - Creator 1, Zometool - Creator 3
but, they are just so expensive.  We do have Tinkertoys, K'nex, Lincoln Logs, and a LOT of LEGO's already...I just like making our brains problem solve in a new way by building with new materials.  That was one of the great things about my undergraduate experience at the Kansas City Art Institute; in the Sculpture department--our teacher made us try EVERY single type of sculpture and process.  Sometimes I would really like one thing, and wanted to keep doing that one thing; but he made us keep trying everything out.

Lastly, she is building a Star Wars house from boxes and duct tape.  Each room is customized with different colored duct tape, and chairs or beds...holograph things on the walls, etc.  She is having fun designing it.

Bible:

Judges Through Kings Teacher's Manual (Veritas Press Bible Curriculum, Grade 3) by Emily Fischer

We are on our new Veritas Press- Judges Through Kings book, and Dd is really enjoying her book that her grandparents bought her, instead of me printing out the pages.  It is much nicer I think!

Believer's Bible Commentary   [BELIEVERS BIBLE COMMENTARY -SS] [Hardcover] by W.(Author) ; MacDonald, William(Author);

The Greenleaf Guide To Old Testament History by Rob G. Shearer

We've adapted it to meet out needs by bringing in our own Max Lucado Bible and Believer's Bible Commentary.  Lucado, also has notes on the side of each page that we read that give insight and help.  So we read each verse in our bible, then in the bible commentary again to make sure we fully understand it.  Then we look at our new Archeological bible to see if it has any tidbits of information to add as well.  Then we read our assigned Journey Through the Bible pages, and do our Greenleaf questions, and VP student questions to complete each card.  VP has some different books that they recommend, that I think are more of a children's bible for younger students; but we went with our normal bible since that is where we are and started this program probably a bit older than they had planned families to start.

Core F Week 16 Feb. 10-16th, 2014

Core F
Week 16
Feb. 10-16th, 2014
Studies in India this section
* I put a whole post of pictures from this week below this post!

Just in case you thought the people in the house were the only bird watchers....Smedley is here to prove to you that he is just as interested!!!!  If you could only see his tail twitching in delight as he enjoys his second favorite pastime.  Christie--this is the cat that is always between me and the keyboard when I am typing!  He is the "on top" of everything cat.  Dd has a pair of binoculars, I have a pair, and it seems to me, there is a small, third pair--is that pair for him?!!  That cat! ha!

I'm going to mix up my order of things this week---you are now warned... I normally do my post in a very methodical manner; but not today---caution has been tossed aside!

For Core F, we are in India.  The books we added (not SL) are:
India: The Land; was an older book that I had purchased used.  It was a good book to read; but I found it to be more 'dated' than I had thought it was going to be.  The book I also bought Teens in India was much more up to date and better at showing what India must be like today.

Teens in India (Global Connections) by Lori Shores

Hungry Planet, actually had a very good chapter on a family in India; I was quite pleased with it.  These are the books we read for this week on India.

Poet of the Week:
Ben Jonson

http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem/173729
Song: To Celia

Drink to me only with thine eyes,

         And I will pledge with mine;

Or leave a kiss but in the cup,

And I’ll not look for wine.

The thirst that from the soul doth rise

         Doth ask a drink divine;

But might I of Jove’s nectar sup,

I would not change for thine.

I sent thee late a rosy wreath,

         Not so much honouring thee

As giving it a hope, that there

         It could not withered be.

But thou thereon didst only breathe,

         And sent’st it back to me;

Since when it grows, and smells, I swear,

         Not of itself, but thee.

Norton Anthology of Poetry by Alexander Allison

The Poets' Corner: The One-and-Only Poetry Book for the Whole Family by Lithgow, John

I had to memorize Song: to Celia back in high school, College Prep English; and have always loved that poem.  We spent a good amount of time each day this week reading different poems by Ben Jonson and to read Song: to Celia too.  I was hoping that maybe she might memorize it.  Dd really seemed to like Ben Jonson, and came as close as she does to fully coming out and saying that!  It seems so hard to believe that he was a contemporary of William Shakespeare!  The Poets' Corner book had a good 2 pages on him, and gave some lovely detail, along with poems by the artist as well.  I've found this particular book handy quite a few times and am glad I bought it.

Language Arts:

I won't bore you all with the details; but I'll say the curriculum we are using:

We have started back with Following Narnia; a IEW product, but it has been a lot more difficult than I thought it would be.  We have had to pull out our old IEW discs to re-watch; but we have been working on it and giving it a-go.  We have added the FN vocabulary words to our weekly work, doing 3 words per week; which has been fun.  This weeks exciting words are: merriment, desolate, and violence.  We also completed another week in our IEW's Fix-It program (week 30)

We are still progressing along very well with AAS 5(passed step 26 & 27)and Daily Grams ( Days 21-25)each day.

KJV Archaeological Study Bible: An Illustrated Walk Through Biblical History and Culture by Zondervan

This week we finished up the first book of Veritas Press of Joshua Through Genesis.  We have added other books into the program that have helped us to really wrap our whole brains around everything we've read.  We added The Believer's Bible Commentary; which has been great.  I have just purchased The Archaeological Study Bible to add into our program.  Last week we read bits and pieces from about 5 other books I own, as well.  The VP is good; but it does make you want to keep digging!  The good, and bad part of this program is that it takes at LEAST an hour to do our bible each day.

Men of the Bible: A One-Year Devotional Study of Men in Scripture by Ann Spangler

This week we also added in Men of the Bible; and read the section (week) on Joshua.

The extra fun mapping project this week was that I drew the map of Palestine; the division of the land between the twelve tribes.

Let's see- the nuts and bolts of the program didn't include any of the above items we did--the VP items are:

Finished card 31: we only had : Journey Through the Bible: pg's 82-85 left to complete.
