Core F Week 8 Nov. 18-22, 2013

Core F
Week 8
Nov. 18-22, 2013

Somehow I got the type of wicked nasty bug where I couldn't talk; plus lots of coughing--dry coughing.  So, needless to say we did not get a lot done.  But, Dd did get to "teach" and read aloud for most of the week; and did so without complaint.  She spent hours outside each day instead of doing lessons; building her "fort".  It is a very modern fort; made out of blue tarps and metal poles instead of branches---which is actually what she would much (much) prefer it to be made out of, but we live in a new neighborhood and have planted the trees in our backyard ourselves.  There are no dead limbs to be found laying around for her to drag into our yard; to her dismay.  Since Dh has gone back to the farm this weekend (deer hunting) she has made an appeal for him to return with some branches for her to use for future forts.  I am not sure if he will bring them back for her or not?  But, I was very glad to see her out there making a fort out of the resources we have available to her!!!  I will try to take a picture soon, but right now our camera is with Dh in case he gets another deer.  Last weekend he didn't take the camera and he did get a deer!

This was our last week of Swim & Gym--lifeguard training; and thus our fall activities are now concluded.  The very cold temperatures have arrived early, so I am glad we are done and can prepare for Christmas.  Both Dd and I have both completed our fall dentist visits in the past 2 weeks!!  (and no snow on the roads for those trips!)

This weeks lessons: (not much of them!)

*You know how each time you read the bible; something different sticks out at you?-well, this time through, I was struck by how Jacob/Israel and Joseph were embalmed by the Pharaoh's people so they could go to Canaan.  I'd never really thought much on that before.
We have been doing our bible studies in the stairwell each morning; when the sun comes in there to get our daily sunshine quota!  This has been very nice.  We usually do this every winter.

Cooking:
Dd and I have been cooking a lot more together, and this has become a nice little habit we have gotten into.  We have been stretching out of our normal, easier recipes too!  Mon. we did make our normal "chicken stripes", but she made a new side to go with it---she cut up potato and sweet potato fries and put them on a baking sheet with olive oil and her favorite seasoning---chili powder--and they were amazing!  I think we had brussel sprouts with that too.  I think with me being sick the rest of the week all she did was open cans of chicken noodle soup or lentil soup; until I got better.  But, once I was better we bakes 2 whole chickens and she made mashed potatoes on her own--like the fries; she asked and received no help.  Then on Sat. I woke up to a cherry coffee cake already in the oven!  She found the recipe and made it from scratch!  It is delicious!

Making things:
Besides making the fort, and being outside for hours each day this week; she has been making our Christmas cards--I think she has 5 made at this point.  She sewed a black sunhat that had come undone.  She has been making her Star Wars figures clothes out of tissue paper---I'll post pix of that.

SL Core F stuff: JAPAN
We spent about 2 hours watching youtube video's on Japan.  It was really neat all the different things you can find if you just sit down and watch.  I had been trying to use my library for resources for the countries we have been visiting; but they didn't have much---but youtube has some really great tourist video's.  We saw one long video on Tokyo, and they explained the culture and how to do things--the polite way...it was very educational.  For example, when using chop sticks it is 'rude' to tap your chop sticks on the table to get them level if they get un-level--something I've done quite a few times when eating sushi!  I never knew I was being rude! I'd seen other people 'sure up' theirs that way, and assumed that was the correct way of doing it...wrong!  Anyway, that isn't a book I can list...but we did learn about different parts of Japan that way.

We didn't get through all our EHN pages this week, but next week is a LOW (left-over week) and we can get caught up again.

Hopefully, I will be all better next week and we can enjoy our Thanksgiving!  I'd like to wish you all a wonderful thanksgiving to you all!  I know the more I count and appreciate each thing I am thankful for, the more I appreciate what I do have!
