Core F Week 5 Oct. 28-Nov. 1, 2013

Core F
Week 5
Oct. 28-Nov. 1, 2013

This week we had some catching up to do right off the start since we had been to the farm over the weekend.  My normal Saturday chores had to get done over the week; which cut into our "lesson time".  It was really hard trying to get all the chores done and do our normal amount of lessons....it didn't happen each day; but I get it done on a few days.  I guess that we try our best to make it happen on MOST days.  We also had a big week dealing with her character issue that had been flaring up; and she lost going to Swim & Gym...enough said...attitude adjustment complete; not to undermine all the discussions that had previously taken place; but sometimes talks are  not enough and actions mean more and makes things happen that wouldn't otherwise.  It was a long spell of working that episode out; and I am so glad we kept working at it until we finally broke the pattern.

Our visit to the farm was really wonderful.  Dh's hunting buddy got married a few years after we did and I was pregnant with Dd at his wedding.  Then they had their daughter!  Now the girls are 10 and 11 years old and they get to meet up each year at hunting season (in their camo's) and play out in the woods like their dads!  They all had a great time!  It was great weather for it too (50's and 60's).

Our lessons:

For Core F : We are still in CHINA

We are reading Mission to Cathay and as each reading passes, Dd is liking this book more and more.  She started off liking Young Fu of the Upper Yangtze more; but now she is liking Mission to Cathay best!!  I liked Mission to Cathay best from the get-go; but Young Fu was always right close behind.  They are both terrific books and I am very well pleased with them.  I will have to say that on the SL forums that I read; many parents have commented that it is difficult to read a chapter of each book due to both books having LONG chapters; and I will admit that I have found that to be true for us also.  We are spending a lot of our "lesson time" on Reading Aloud and finding little time for our important electives----boy, isn't that always the case with Sonlight!!!  I love the books; but boy does it leave little time for Science, Art, Language Arts, and the like!  But, I still feel very lead to stick with our program and work around the way we have.  We are also reading 100 Gateway Cities; which I am not really liking - and finding it very shallow; and hoping it will grow on us as we get into it further.  So far, it is just a short description of a town or city in China (since we are studying China right now) and how to pray for it.

We are adding in The Believer's Bible Commentary to read what it has to say about Genesis 26 and 27.  Adding the commentary in has been a terrific addition; and has generally been very insightful and usually not redundant.  We also read from our matching bibles together - the selection of verses (on Monday).  Tuesday and Wednesday we read from Journey Through the Bible - pages 32-39.  Greenleaf Guide Through the Old Testament questions on Wed. and Thur.; along with workbook questions. and Friday we just read from our bible Genesis 27.  We have one page of Greenleaf questions left for Monday to finish Card 14.

Ch. 14- Sir Humphry Davy (the Hare of Chemistry)
You know, this is a really interesting and fun book to read aloud.  I know I am not understanding ALL of it; but I do feel better for having read it.  And just trying to get it makes me feel better for having tried!!!  I do encourage others to read this and if your children are happy to listen then keep reading.  I do stop periodically and ask my Dd if she is getting it; and she says that she is, 'for the most part' and that she wants me to keep reading.  So, we are continuing on for as long as we can.  I have read on a review somewhere that the last chapters are very difficult; but I haven't gotten there yet--so I don't know about that yet...stay tuned!

Scooby-Doo Halloween MAD LIBS by Roger Price and Leonard Stern

MADLIBS--Scooby-Doo
I have bought these books years ago HOPING they would perk Dd's interest in LA; and FINALLY they have come into her view; and sense of humor!!!!!!  Now, we have done them just about everyday for 2 weeks!  I haven't always made Science a priority; or Art; but I have made Language Art a focus...and still she gets confused with Adjectives and Adverbs and this just may be the thing that gets us over the hump!  I'm so thankful!!!  We have seriously done First Language Lessons 1, 2, 3 and are almost done with 4 and still we are not GETTING IT---UGH.  I really don't understand how or why she is not a genius in LA at this point.  Writing with Ease 1, 2, and now we are on 3....flashcards....etc. etc. I picked a program that had everything written out for me to say, so it didn't rely on me to say the right thing---all I had to do was recite what was written by the professionals.  Anyway, I will stop rambling about our LA woe's to say that she is really THINKING about adverbs and adjectives because of madlibs!! yeah, madlibs!  And it is very fun family time too!!! That is also a huge bonus b/c it involves Dh too.

AAS 5: Step 14: passed
WWE: Writing With Ease 3:
 Lesson 8: Day 1-4 completed
FLL 4: First Language Lessons: completed Review Lesson 80, 81
each of these remaining lessons are "Review Lessons" and are very long---and requires more than one session to complete.

Hungry Planet by Menzel D'Aluiso
