The Middle East (Kingfisher Knowledge) by Philip Steele

We are still in the MIDDLE EAST with our Core F stuff, and *I* have learned so much---hopefully my Dd has too!!!  This is our last week on this area and I will be sad to see it end.  This week I celebrated another birthday.  On Friday Dd and I had lunch at the "L" house, and then the older "L"'s and their mom went for a two hour hike with Dd and I.  It was a great hike--we saw two Downey Woodpeckers!  I couldn't get a good photo of them; it kept moving and was behind some leaves.

Dh got me a wonderful birthday / Mother's Day gift: (a tool for prying up roots of weeds)  Yes, in case you wondered, having your birthday days before Mother's Day is a bummer!  Only one ever gets celebrated...which since my birthday comes first, that is the holiday they focus on.  But, the good thing about growing older is that you don't care so much about little things like holidays and birthdays anymore.

This week in our bible program, I previously talked about how our Veritas Press didn't do a good job telling us WHICH Psalms we are suppose to read for our assignment!  It is driving me crazy!  I want to do the assignment; but I don't think they really want us to read all 150 Psalms!  We spent most of last week (four days) on Psalms, and all this week on Psalms too.  We have completed the VP worksheet pages on the Psalms, so I think we are done; but still feel guilty that I might be shorting the Psalms section.  So far this has been the only 'card' that  hasn't been specific.

We have this bible; and on each page it has "Life Lessons" in the margins, on the sides of each page, and we read those mini sermons each day too. In our VP workbook they broke the Psalms down into FIVE categories: 1)Praise 2)Thanksgiving 3)Lament 4)Imprecatory 5) Confession  

We had to find examples of each of the different types.  We read our bible verse, then we read what the Believer's Bible Commentary has to say about that verse.

We have been getting out our super big atlas and looking up each place we read about in our 100 Gateway Cities book.  We also went to Google Earth and looked up Istanbul.  Istanbul is really a cool place to look up!  Highly recommend using Google Earth to look up cities you are studying.  The 100 Gateway Cities this week, covering the Middle East, the book also gave biblical history for each city.

Made TACO's! The meat cooked from scratch, added the spices, and baked the taco shells, and  "plated up" the taco's.  She says that plating up the food is her favorite part.

This was what I call a "LOW", for 'left-over week'.  We don't always get through all the assignments for our Sonlight Core, and fall a little behind, so I schedule a "LOW" to get caught up and finish the assignments still in our refrigerator!  We hadn't done any of our "Eastern Hemisphere Notes" (EHN) assignments, so we tried to spend an hour on it each day.  We didn't get any EHN done on Friday (Dd had Field Day with our hs group).  But, we did make some progress and should be able to finish what work is left by the end of next week...hopefully.

Our activities for this week:  Mon-Wed was just our lessons.  Thur we took the "L" family children to Eagle Creek Park and had a fan-tas-tic time!  We saw a beaver when we were driving in and looking where to park.  We also had a Pileated Woodpecker totally ignore us as he banged away on a log on the ground, right beside the trail!  So cool.  I put pictures of our trip below this post if you want to see.  There were so many nature excitements this week!  Tree fungus, Algae in the pond, huge/enormous Sycamores trees, birds (I think I saw a WREN! (we never see wrens around here)), and all sorts of animal tracks in the mud. We also saw a beaver!

Friday Dd had "Field Day" with our smaller hs group.  Dh and I planned to go to a book sale.  We asked our friend the "G" family if they could take her with them, like they did last year, for this fun event.  Dd had a really good time.  They got ribbons for how they placed in the three different competitions: Running, Throwing, and Jumping.

Migraine Week: This was one of those weeks for me.  I had such a bad migraine on Wed. that we had to stop doing lessons after lunch so I could take myself to bed.  Then Thursday was a good day; only to have Friday another big migraine.  I was miserable enough to go to bed at 1pm again.  I slept for a few hours and then felt good enough to take her to the "G" families house for her Field Day.  Two days this week I had to stop lessons and go to bed; which I hate, but it did give Dd lots of time to play---which I love!  She got a new Star Wars character for doing her Rosetta Stone lessons last week, and she has been having such a great time with her Star Wars figures.  She has sewn at least 2 outfits for her SW figures, and they look awesome!  I really love that she spends hours playing (instead of being on a screen-computer or tv!) 

Saturday we drove down to Southern Indiana to visit Giz & Grampy.  Giz had a heart by-pass (actually FIVE!) and I hadn't visited her yet.  Dd mowed there yard while we were there.  She rode the regular mower, and the 'zero turn' mower and I think she had a great time!  This was her third weekend in a row mowing; but at least at G&G's house they have a 'rider' mower.

Knitting: 
Dd finished her white hat--I'll get a picture to post here later.  And she started on a new thing--I am not positive what it will be yet; it looked like a scarf maybe.  She also sewed outfits and capes for her Star Wars figures.

Bible: 
Well....our Veritas Press Bible program had an assignment card that just said "Psalms", and I don't know which Psalms we are suppose to do, so we have just spent the whole week on Psalms---we could probably spend 6 months on them!  I don't know what we are suppose to do!  Our workbook has 4 Psalms specifically mentioned with questions about them; so I know we will read those on top of what we are doing on our own.  The good or bad thing; depending on how you look at it, is that we have been reading our bible's verses and then we go over to our Believer's Bible Commentary to read what that book has to say about the bible verse we just read.  Sometimes, or actually maybe 'usually' the bible commentary's notes are longer than the actual bible verse.  The commentary is SO HELPFUL!  I'm so glad I decided to crack that book open for our Veritas Press bible readings each day.  The only drawback is that it certainly takes twice as long to do our bible each day than if we hadn't been using it. I highly recommend our commentary to anyone doing a bible study.  I can't say how many times the commentary has completely changed what I thought the bible verse was about!

1. Historical--connected with some definite event or events in Israel's history or in the life of the psalmist.
2.Messianic--dealing with the sufferings of Christ and the glories that should follow.
3.Prophetic or Millennial--pointing forward to Israel's future tribulation and the subsequent era of peace and prosperity.
4.Penitential--recording the psalmist's deep confession of sins and his broken-hearted cries for forgiveness.
5.Imprecatory--imploring God to take vengeance on the enemies of His people.
