Week 16 "A" LOW
(LOW means "left overs week" as in- completing the assignments we didn't get done from the weeks before, and catching up! We do fall behind, and we also need to fit in extra's as well. We also had a busy week of activities scheduled.)
Our activities for this week:
Swim and Gym started back up!!! We drive down to Plainfield Parks & Rec. for a homeschool class that is half gym class; followed by a swim instruction class. The past 2 sessions were lifeguarding instead of swim lessons; but now we are back to swim lessons; and Dd is happy about that since she has been missing doing laps. This activity is every Tuesday for 8 weeks, and we do it in the spring and fall each year, and have for years now.
On Thursday Dd had her last basketball practice; followed by her last game on Saturday--which they won. This is put on by the "Upwards Basketball" organization, and they only have teams up to grade 6, so Dd has officially retired...at age 11...how sad, sad, sad... She played super well, and handled it all really well. Her coach was ready to cry b/c his son, also a 6th grader, also was retired. They played together, on the same team, for the past 3 years, with another player as well.
Thursday during the DAY we had our LHE co-op classes. Dd has 3 classes: Mission to Mars, Gym, and Drama. Then we eat lunch there before we return home. We got to bring a family (minus the sick mother) with us to the co-op, so it looked like I was the mother of 5!!! It was a lot of fun having a packed mini-van for once!
The silver circle on the wall is for holographic imaging and messages--from one of the movies..Dd knows all about it; but *I* am a bit fuzzy on the details.
For things being built this week:
Dd rec'd new duct tape this week; a shiny silver! So, she taped over her previous sword and daggers to look like a real metal with the new tape.
Then she built new things with toothpicks and mini-marshmallows. I'd seen 2 different classes building things last week while at our LHE co-op and told Dd about them; then bought the marshmallows. One class built a Gumdrop Dome (out of gumdrops and toothpicks) and another class -the Dr.Seuss class- built funny things out of straight spaghetti and mini-marshmallows. Next I want to buy some big skewers, for her to build with, with more marshmallows. I've looked at theses:
Zometool 1 - Creator 1, Zometool - Creator 3
but, they are just so expensive. We do have Tinkertoys, K'nex, Lincoln Logs, and a LOT of LEGO's already...I just like making our brains problem solve in a new way by building with new materials. That was one of the great things about my undergraduate experience at the Kansas City Art Institute; in the Sculpture department--our teacher made us try EVERY single type of sculpture and process. Sometimes I would really like one thing, and wanted to keep doing that one thing; but he made us keep trying everything out.
Lastly, she is building a Star Wars house from boxes and duct tape. Each room is customized with different colored duct tape, and chairs or beds...holograph things on the walls, etc. She is having fun designing it.

We are on our new Veritas Press- Judges Through Kings book, and Dd is really enjoying her book that her grandparents bought her, instead of me printing out the pages. It is much nicer I think!

So we read each verse in our bible, then in the bible commentary again to make sure we fully understand it. Then we look at our new Archeological bible to see if it has any tidbits of information to add as well. Then we read our assigned Journey Through the Bible pages, and do our Greenleaf questions, and VP student questions to complete each card. VP has some different books that they recommend, that I think are more of a children's bible for younger students; but we went with our normal bible since that is where we are and started this program probably a bit older than they had planned families to start.

Poetry Speaks to Children; I just LOVE this book and disc. It has most of the authors saying their own poems on the disc--like Robert Frost saying The Road Not Taken! So great! Jabberwocky, done by Lewis Carroll is my ultimate favorite on the disc...amazing! I just love this disc!

Sonlight's Language Arts- Week 7-completed. I'm late starting up on this; but I am finding it very good. I'm trying to make sure I fit it into our week. We are learning things we've not learned in our other LA programs...and I thought we really had been doing too much LA! Apparently not! I am glad this was in with the IG, and we are using it every week now; I would like to get caught up.
