A week without shoveling snow!  Finally!  There is just a few little piles of snow on the ground, but a distinct feeling of spring in the air.

We had real difficulties getting our lessons done this week, but Dh had to work again this Saturday, so we got another day to help complete some things (but not all that I had scheduled).

Dh and I got out and voted; which is always a good thing to do.

Dh got the nut off his truck, but still has to put things back together, and that hasn't been going well.  He hopes it is getting closer to being done.

At Dd's 1:1 sax lesson this week with her teacher, Mrs. March, she told Dd that she can tryout the Baritone sax over the summer.  The girl that had been using it has graduated and she wants to give Dd a chance at it.  We had a chance to talk over the future and plans.

GERD: It has been two months since I went off my reflux, indigestion, and heartburn medications (they were found to cause liver disease), and I am finding more things this week to help. We found some seeds at a health food store, and I'm already growing three different types of sprouts--alfalfa, red clover, and broccoli.  I will make a post on how I'm growing them.  I went to YouTube and searched: "Growing Sprouts" and watched so many video's to educate myself.  The reason behind eating the sprouts is that they are much easier to digest than older plants, and pack as good, or better amounts of vitamins/minerals/protein.  I am dabbling in making my own milk kefir, but am afraid to drink what I made!!  My sample was very questionable, and perhaps not even alive.  I might be given a live sample next week, and I will try that for sure.  This weeks sample was very doubtful, and I was afraid if I drank it I would be sick!

Activities:

Band class -1 1/2 hours, Choir- 1 hr, LINK Co-op classes 3 1/2 hours, Library, Music Lesson- 45 minutes, walk in our woods- 1 hour, Girls Night-(played Minute to Win-It)- 2 1/2 hours, church...

Birds:

We saw two Whooping Cranes while leaving our street!  So close to our house!  Amazing!  Dd and I also saw a Pileated Woodpecker from our library/hs room window. Our normal birds visited the feeders.

Chickens: 

Our chicks are all doing great and growing fast!  They are pooping like crazy and it is getting hard to keep their brooder house tidy! As soon as I put down clean towels they aren't clean for long!

Next week is our last LINK Co-op classes.  Dd just has one last assignment due.  I will really miss chatting with Michele, the woman I teach the KinderKids with.  She has really been helpful on giving me health advise.  But, I will be VERY glad to be able to focus more on OUR lessons again soon!

Next week Giz and Grampy are planning on visiting for a few days.  I'm going to try and wrap up the Viking book we are reading, math, and module six in our Apologia Gen. Science before they arrive, then we can focus on spending time with them.

It has been a really big music week.  Dd has been playing Billy Joel's, Piano Man, every day and really improving each time she plays it.  She has been seriously deep purging her bedroom and found her big file of piano music and has been playing like crazy.  Plus, after her excellent practice with Mrs. March she has been re-energized again.  Mrs. March passed two songs for her, from the new sax book, and gave her new music to work on.

Rosetta Stone: French

FIVE times this week!  Yes, I totally told her on Monday if she worked on French each day she could win a prize.  I've tried everything else, and nothing was working, so I had to pull out a carrot!  Plus, instead of making her do thirty minutes each time, I lowered my expectation to ten minutes per lesson (I know that once she gets started she stays on for a bit).  She was SO certain she wanted to study French, and then immediately after we bought it she wanted to learn German...If course we bought Levels 1, 2, 3.

Mystery of History: not exactly sure all we did as we listened as we drove this week; but oddly enough we had already heard all of it before.  Oh well, we got to hear about the Vikings again; which is our history focus of the week.

Separation of Sedimentation

I just wanted to show a bit of the Student Notebook that we use along with our textbook.  It really does help us process what we are learning and evaluate what we are seeing/learning.

We bought the kit that contains all (or most) of the things we need to do our experiments, and it is really wonderful!  We only had to dig up some soil and some gravel/rocks.

We had to add into a jar 1/5 of dirt, 1/5 of rocks, 1/5 of gravel, and then fill up the rest of the jar with water (specifically fill it up with water until the jar is 3/4 full).  So, I took a ruler and marked off sections every inch and then filled up each thing to the mark I made with a Sharpie.

Add water and shake some more!

Lastly put it down to settle

After we mixed it up, we had to wait one hour and then go look at how much settling has occured.

Now we wait 24 hours and then check the jar again...and perhaps see more clear layers?!

When holding the chicks, they feel so different now.  The soft downey feathers are getting replaced by ones that feel a little like hay.  When Dd got in the booster box with them today they repeatedly hopped up on her legs!!!  She loved it!  I'm so glad they are comfortable with us.

It appears that they are liking jumping up on the water container!  How funny!

They are still all doing very well! And changing so much each day.

Alum in hot water, in a cup with a washer knotted onto a thread.  I think we were suppose to grow a crystal, but this experiment flopped.  We still have it on our counter--after six days, and I can see some crystals forming around the edge.  I'll take a new picture of what it looks like after sitting for a week, so you can see.  

We needed two tablespoons of Alum, two glasses, a plate, thread, two washers, and hot water.

We were only suppose to fill up this juice glass half-way, but we put in too much water, and it was too late to do anything about it.  We were to stir in the Alum, and stir until it dissolved, and it was *suppose* to have some Alum that wasn't going to dissolve, but ALL our Alum did dissolve.  After letting the stirred hot water settle, we were to carefully pour the top *clear* water into a new glass that has a washer at the bottom, attached to a string of thread, that is about eight inches long and goes out of the glass and out to the counter-top and has another washer holding it down.

This picture shows you the set up, after the Alum was dissolved into the round cup, and then we poured the alum-water from the round cup into the cup with the waiting washer.  

Immediately bubbles started coming up.

We had extra water left over so we decided to do the experiment twice and see how each glass does.  I'll post updated pictures soon, but I think nothing really happened except a *tiny* little crystal on one little spot on the thread and some crystallization on the glass where the water met the air inside.

Follow-Up Pictures after Six Days:

These two washers were identical when we started.  The pictures don't do a very good job of showing just how 'eaten' the washer on the right became.

Each thread had a chunk of crystal on it.

You can see the crystallization on the washer and the thread.

The Alum must have really been a weak acid b/c the washers really took a whale of a beating!  The smaller washer really is so much more frail compared to the outside washer.  You can see the metal flakes all in the water solution.
