Chickens Day 35

Chickens Day 35

The chickens are doing very well.  It has been cold here--20 degrees as I write this.  I added a bunch of wood shavings, almost a whole bag, to the floor in their chicken tractor, to help keep them warm.

This week I added grit--little rocks--to help the chicks with their digestion.  I don't know if I was suppose to add it yet or not!  We also added a new watering bucket (see picture at the bottom of the post).  I have to clean and exchange their watering Ball jars a few times a day, so I bought the professional kind that won't let any wood shavings in it.  I plan on making a PVC watering system soon.

Check our these wings!

This is one of the smallest Buff Orpington's, probably a male, but he was the easiest to catch!

Isn't it interesting how the most-likely male Buff Orpington's are the ones that face the dangerous camera, and the 'ladies,' the Black Stars, stay back?!  There are two Black Star ladies that are clearly the head of the troop.

Can you see the blue bucket?  It is a water bucket that we bought at Tractor Supply.  It has four 'chicken nipples' on the underside.  You know, those little metal contraptions that when pushed up, lets water come out, one drip at a time.  You see this kind of thing in hamster cages.
I plan on making a duplicate chicken tractor asap.  With it being so cold it is probably good that they are all together, but once it warms up they will need to spread out more.

  2. This week I finally see them as "chickens" now! I need to figure out a way to make each one look different so I could remember who I have held and who I have missed. Thinking and praying for you! Thanks for the note! Sending you some chilly air!
