Core G Week 8 “C”
The Greeks- Fourth week of the Greeks
Jan. 26-30th, 2015

This is "my" page of what I want to complete each week.  I don't always do a great job of adding everything we do here either---I only have Under Wildwood checked off for listening one day, when we did listen two days.  I usually get all our doings on my final typed up version that I put on the blog, but some things don't get included.

This is "Dd's Page".  She doesn't do a great job of marking off things as she does them, but she knows what is expected of her each day and does it.  I'm working on getting her to do a better job with checking off!

Bible information page- For the subject of "Bible" I always just use a lined sheet to keep track of what we have covered each week.  Some weeks we add in many different reference books, so I like to have lots of space available for that reason.  This week we only used four books, so I didn't really need a lot of space...but, better to be prepared.  I write in abbreviation on this form.

Another week off our Sonlight Instructor’s Guide, and creating our own path, so we can dig deep in our study of all things GREEK!  I have to say, this has been difficult, we have spent 22 weeks on Core G, and yet are only on their “week 8” as far as reading their material.  I know when we did Core D we spent 72 weeks doing that “36 week” core; but that was a better ratio than we are doing with our Ancient study.  In case my mom is reading this---what I am saying is that the instruction manual for this year has us scheduled to whip through the study of Ancient Times very quickly, and we are WAY too interested in this part of history to go quick!  We have added in a LOT of books and information to what they (“they” refers to Sonlight, the company that we buy our instructions from) had designed.
To add to this, I have ordered a few more things from a company similar to Sonlight(SL), called BiblioPlan(BP), to give us more maps, and information about Ancient history to add to our learning this year.  We will be spending this whole year specifically on studying Ancient history, and this is a good thing!  We will really get to know a lot about it!  I am contemplating, after we finish our book(s) on Greece (The Book of the Ancient Greeks) that we do a review of what we have already covered in Core G.  This history review would be like the math review we did last month; where we were on Lesson 16, but instead of doing that lesson, we went back to Lesson 1 and re-watched the dvd and re-did the “A” page for that material.  We spent one day per lesson, though some lessons needed more work, so we took as long as needed to ensure proper comprehension on those exceptional lessons.  It would be really beneficial to go over what we have learned so far, in Core G, starting back at the very beginning and perhaps pick up some new information with the BP books.

The biggest problem we are having is that many of our sources keep repeating the same stories.  We had read and listened to Percy Jackson’s Greek Myths, which was a very inclusive, then we read Black Ships Before Troy (The Iliad) and The Wanderings of Odysseus (The Odyssey), plus many other sources prior to the books we are reading this week which both are re-telling those same stories.  This week we continued on with Famous Men of Greece and The Book of Ancient Greece—and I keep hoping one of these current versions will provide us with some NEW tidbits that will make it worth us re-reading the material over and over!!  But, so far, I am sorry to say it really hasn’t been worth all the repeating; but I can acknowledge that the material will be thoroughly known due to the repetitiveness.   The other problem, is I think Dd is about saturated with the Greeks, and we still have a week or two left to finish the books we are in the middle of!

This week we DID start our Prima Latina—Latin Program!!!  We watched the dvd for lesson 1 on Monday, and then I made us re-watch that episode each day after to cement our words---
Salve!—Hello, To one
Salvete! Hello, to more than one person
*Then the vowels
*Then Ambulo, Via, Deus, Toga, and Luna
We are doing a program that I had bought 1 ½ years ago, so I hope this program will be fairly easy for a Seventh grader!  But, it is just a stepping stone!  I’ll have to keep reminding us!

We also started The Fallacy Detective, the “logic” book that I had wanted to do last year…but, the point is we have started!  It feels so good to actually be able to start something that I have wanted to fit in for so long now!!

This week was very productive, especially considering Dd has/had a cold and wasn’t feeling 100%.   Besides just our lessons, she went on three ‘nature hikes’ with me in the woods around our apartment building.

She kept herself busy with lots of crocheting this week!  She crocheted more material than ever before, and was genuinely proud of herself!  I’ve told her that she has to finish the thing she is working on now before she can work on the other projects she has started.  She has four or five crochet/knitted projects started right now.  She also had a second major “LEGO WEEK”; completing the “Middle Ages” town that she had started last week.  It has been kind of disrupting to hear her rifling through her LEGO boxes looking for right blocks to make what she wanted to.

We took Tuesday morning as our errands time; and we went to the library and grocery shopping.  The roads were actually CLEAR!  It felt good to be out and about!  I am hoping by next winter I can trade in my current car for one with all-wheeled-drive, so it won’t be so slippery for me driving.  I need all the help I can get!!!  Although I have been praying for our house in Indiana to SELL and for us to find a home here that meets all our needs (Dd a tree to climb, Dh a place to putter, and enough property that I can walk and look at nature each day---rain, shine, snow, and sunshine).  I’m full of prayers of thankfulness and asking for help in this odd transition time.  The funny part, about us (90 lb dog, 16 year old cat, 12 ½ year old daughter, Dh and I), living in this 900’ square feet apartment is that as the months go on I am getting more comfortable here and Dh is getting more and more frustrated with it!  I think he is ready for a new house!

History:
The Book of the Ancient Greeks
Pg’s 161-263
Ch. 9: The Great Persian Invasion Under Xerxes
Ch. 10: The Athenian Empire
Ch. 11: Life in Ancient Athens in the Time of Pericles
Ch. 12: A Day With an Athenian
Ch. 13: The Athenian Schoolboy
Ch. 14: The Greek Theater (and we read a play!)
She completed the “Review 2” test which was six pages long—basically this is a test.
We have a thick book (The Book of the Ancient Greeks), then the “Teacher’s Manual” and a “Student Manual” which has 2 pages of questions about each chapter that we read.  I think we are 2/3 through now!  Another week (or two) to go until we complete this fairly comprehensive set.

Famous Men Of Greece
This book has fantastic illustrations!  We really have enjoyed that aspect of this book.  But, (so far) this book is just another book that gives an abbreviated version of all the Greek myths.  It doesn’t provide information about actual Greek Men!  Luckily, Chelle had recommended Invitations to the Classics; which does have a page or two about many of the famous people I’d like to start sharing with my Dd.  For example, we keep hearing about Aristotle, Galileo, Plato, etc. in our lessons.  But, Famous Men of Greece is a good review of the material we have already heard; so perhaps that is worth the time to re-read this material.
This week we read: Agememnon, King of Men; Jason and the Golden Fleece; Theseus;
Achilles, Bravest of the Greeks

Tools of the Ancient Greeks: NEW BOOK
Pg’s 1-32
I’m really enjoying this light material, yet informative.  Some of the information had already been covered in The Book of Ancient Greeks, but this material has a different tone and easy approach.

Trojan War

Dd has somehow lost this book, and could not find it, so she didn’t get any of her scheduled reading on this book completed.  It is hard to imagine in this small apartment that we could misplace something!  She will be finding it before we start next week! ETA: Found!

History Reader:
This is a Lamplighter book that Dd asked for, for Christmas.  She says it is difficult reading and that she has to re-read sentences to fully comprehend the material.  This book has been challenging for her, but she definitely likes the book.

Khan Academy:
We listened to 122 minutes this week on Ancient History.  I really appreciate this FREE educational site.  They cover the Greeks, and other ancient civilizations.

SNAIL:
Since Opis is doing so well in our small tank, we went back to the store and bought a second snail and a water plant for the tank.  The second snail appeared dead at the store, and I should have asked for one that I had seen moving, but there was a line, so I just took this one hoping it was alive.  It took 3-4 days at home with us before it really came out of it’s shell; at least for a short amount of time.  After 7 days, we are sure it is alive and doing really well now.  So, Dd named it “Bilbo” b/c it is slow and sluggish—or so she says!  It certainly was a big question for most of the week!  It really has done a big turn-around for us!!!  Happily!!!
Welcome to Bilbo, and Opis is doing very well too!  She really looks bigger!
Sat. trip to the Meier Sculpture garden---I will do a post about this next; we had a GREAT time!
