Ancients Sonlight Core G Week 10 "A" March 30 - April 3rd, 2015

Ancients
Sonlight Core G
Week 10 "A"
March 30 - April 3rd, 2015
31st Week on Ancients: 10/36

One issue I had to process this week, was one that perhaps some other homeschooling moms can relate to---my MIL and BIL, and niece-in-law all voiced their "CONCERN" over my Dd being homeschooled during high school.  They didn't think Dd would be accepted to college after being homeschooled.  It doesn't help that BIL is a middle school teacher, that happens to not have a high regard for homeschoolers apparently.  I long for the day when my family can understand or have faith in my ability to not lead my Dd astray academically.  We are in the "seventh grade" but they are already concerned for the future.

We made it back to the Butterfly Exhibit, and went early this time! We beat the crowd, and enjoyed a few minutes before most of the crowd (and buses) arrived!

Our Lessons:
Bible:
With Easter coming up, I thought it would be a perfect time to fit in Vinegar Boy by Alberta Hawse.
Rainbow Resource description:
Abandoned by his parents and shunned by society, Vinegar Boy is certain he'll be adopted once Jesus removes the ugly birthmark that scars his cheek. But when he carries the drugged vinegar to a crucifixion, Vinegar Boy finds himself face to face with the only one who can heal his face. Is there still time for a miracle?

Core G: History book list; what we read and added in.

Creation Through 1600's
Ancient History
Middle Ages
Medieval History
Renaissance

If you need a list of some book options to slip into your Sonlight (SL) Core G, broken down by scheduled week, here is a list I am working on.  Some times SL will schedule a book that you know won't fit into your lessons, and you want to find a replacement---this list may help.  I know my Dd gets tired of so many male main characters, and wants a few female main characters---or perhaps they don't clip with a specific book and really want to drop it.  Hope this list may help someone; I know I love book lists like this!!! This is only the "history" books we read with this core, I didn't include literature, bible, or fun books.

Here is a list of the books we've read during each week of the core:

Meijer Sculpture Garden, Butterfly Exhibit, April 1st, 2015

Meijer Sculpture Garden,
Butterfly Exhibit,
April 1st, 2015

These ten cocoons are Atlas Moth cocoons.  We've still not seen one hatch during our visits...but they are my most cherished desire to see!  I hope I get to see one!

We arrived as soon as the doors opened so we could get some time in the room without being crowded.  When we arrived there were quite a few butterflies on the walkways that Dd moved to safety before they were trampled.

During the exhibition, approximately 800 chrysalides are delivered each week, totaling more than 7,000 butterflies.

In the "spring room" we were SO fortunate to be there as this Monarch hatched!  We took some footage of the process--it was already out, but we got to watch it fill it's wings some.

So cool!

Dd really had fun getting the Venus Flytraps closing in on her piece of paper!

Ancients Core G Week 10 March 23-27, 2015

Ancients
Core G
Week 10
March 23-27, 2015

We were very busy and on the go this week; which was nice.  The woman I met last week, who has two daughters, close in age to my Dd, invited us to her house for a visit this week (on Thursday).

The Meijer Sculpture Garden, has a LOT to offer.  They have huge glass greenhouses with various habitates in each section, right now they have a Japanese Art exhibit, a butterfly exhibit in one building, and then there is a lot outside too.  Outside they have various 'gardens'; like the Japanese Garden that will open in May.  A 'working farm' of bronze sculptures throughout each part--instead of live chickens there are bronze ones!  It has everything--horses, pigs, crows, cows...all in their rightful place around the farm that you walk through, but they are all sculptures.

There are also acres of massive sculptures.
There is a really neat "wetlands" section that had geese, birds, and this swan (who was actually mean to the other ducks!)
In the room that Dd calls "The Spring Room" was LOTS of Milkweed plants with Monarch Butterfly caterpillars, and chrysalis'. This picture shows what the roof of the buildings look like.  If you look at the black stick on the left, you can see a line of green Monarch chrysalis'.  They do NOT let the Monarch butterflies into the Butterfly Exhibit; since they are from different regions and they do NOT want inter-breeding.

The other major event(s) was that we went to the Meijer Sculpture Garden on Tuesday and Friday mornings; and it was fantastic!!!!  I plan on going at least twice next week too!  I don't think the butterfly exhibit goes on for much longer, and I don't want to miss it!
There is a small building put up in the butterfly exhibit that has shelf after shelf of chrysalis.  There was always many butterflies hatching, and filling up their wings.

We also  went to the library on Friday.  It felt good to be out and about, not concerned about the roads; even though the temperatures this week were between 10-35 degrees most days.  It looked like it would be nice outside; but it was frigid!

See the new babies?
Our snails have now had their THIRD egg case!  Yikes!

Our house in Indiana, we had a showing last Sunday, then Tuesday, this Sunday, and this Monday are scheduled...so things are picking up....prayers appreciated!
