Busy Hands Jan 12-18, 2015

Busy Hands Jan 12-18, 2015

Not feeling well when I put together last weeks entry, I didn't put in the "Busy Hands" portion until days later.  I have since corrected that post to include the Busy Hands, but thought I'd post this separately.  I'm never sure how to do this blog--I have more than one goal!  One part of me wants to give other homeschoolers some book reviews and suggestions for add-in's to their Sonlight cores, and the other part of me wants to share what fun things we are making as we go along.  I don't know if the core material/book material should be listed separately from the Busy Hands?!

This scarf/cowl/infinity scarf that I made for Dd was completed a few weeks ago, but I don't think I had posted it yet so I fit it in here.

I've mailed Aunt Ruth her birthday bird!  I was tardy, but good intentioned!

Dd has since un-raveled this

Dd made ME this hat!!!  I LOVE it!

I sewed the ridge around my forehead tighter so it would stay on better and not be loose...worked so well!

I am making this knitted scarf to match with the hat she made me.

Dd made a sheath for her new swords--the other sheath isn't decorated yet, just the case made.

Dd wanted two T-shirts for Christmas; one purple shirt with "Camp Jupiter" on it, and an orange one that said "Camp Half-Blood"...well, she didn't get those new fancy shirts, so she made her own with old T-shirts she already owned.  We just had to buy the fabric paint.

She bought "Glow-In-The-Dark" paint and painted that on top of the fabric paint so the image would glow!  She made her own stencils on card stock to do each shirt.

Scarf that she is working on..or a "muffler?"

She made a stuffed animal out of duct tape--she finished this two weeks ago.

Dh- hubby was so impressed with the hat Dd made me, he asked for one to be made for HIM!

This is the camo poncho Dd is making for herself

This is a necklace she made

This is the pencil box she covered with duct tape, and then wrote over the WHOLE thing with her favorite quotes from books she loves.

Fun- Lord of the Rings and similar books

Lord of the Rings and similar books

After reading and/or listening to all the Lord of the Ring (LOTR) books, and enjoying the movies, we have been looking for any new LOTR reference books.  We have recently checked out the following books from our library, and they were so cool I thought I'd share them here in case someone had not seen that they were out!  It might have gone unnoticed that so many new LOTR books have recently come out.  You can click on one of the books below and it will show you some of them on Amazon.  Then you can see if your library has them so you can borrow them *for free!!!

I so like seeing what other homeschoolers are reading for fun, and thought I'd share some of what my Dd (daughter) has been reading.  I get ideas about some new books we could try by looking at other homeschoolers blogs.

There are a BUNCH of these out now, but our library only has this one so far.  Your library might have more.

This is the one my Dd really wants to see:

Have you all heard of this, lesser known Tolkien book?:

We haven't read this book yet, but it sounds like we will be!  I somehow missed it.  Here is what Amazon Review says about it:

"The Silmarillion is J.R.R. Tolkien's tragic, operatic history of the First Age of Middle-Earth, essential background material for serious readers of the classic Lord of the Rings saga. Tolkien's work sets the standard for fantasy, and this audio version of the "Bible of Middle-Earth" does The Silmarillion justice. Martin Shaw's reading is grave and resonant, conveying all the powerful events and emotions that shaped elven and human history long before Bilbo, Frodo, Gandalf and all the rest embarked on their quests. Beginning with the Music of the Ainur, The Silmarillion tells a tale of the Elder Days, when Elves and Men became estranged by the Dark Lord Morgoth's lust for the Silmarils, pure and powerful magic jewels. Even the love between a human warrior and the daughter of the Elven king cannot defeat Morgoth, but the War of Wrath finally brings down the Dark Lord. Peace reigns until the evil Sauron recovers the Rings of Power and sets the stage for the events told in the Lord of the Rings. This is epic fantasy at its finest, thrillingly read and gloriously unabridged."

She checked this one out last week, and really liked it.  It isn't about LOTR, but how to sword fight.  It has great pencil drawings of how to perform each thing.  Very cool drawings!  We both liked it.  There is another book with this one, but our library doesn't have it, so we haven't seen it yet (but want to!).  It is called:

Sonlight Core G (Ancients) Week 8"A" (GREEKS) Jan 12-18, 2015

Sonlight Core G

Week 8 “A”

Extended Greek Study

(Second week at our Greek Study)

Jan.12-17, 2015

Sunday Jan 11th, we tried a new church near our apartment buildings.  The church we had been visiting was 30 minutes away, the roads were covered in snow/ice, so we decided perhaps we could try a more friendly and closer church!  This new church was very friendly!  We had quite a few people come over and shake our hand and ask our name. ETA: We went back again this week!  Such a good service!

We ended last week with me having a fever, and then for this week Dd and I both had a fever each day until Thursday when Dd was finally free from hers.  With both of us not feeling well, it was hard to get our lessons done.  Dd was so sickly that she couldn’t think and we had to postpone some of the harder material until she felt better(Monday and Tuesday were her worst days, Thursday and Friday were mine).  But, she started feeling better on Thursday, and that is when my migraine started to kick in.  Friday, I was able to do our bible study, and then my migraine got too bad and I had to go to bed…for the day.  Dd said it is “good” that I have migraines because then she has to do “independent study” and do all our assigned things on her own.  She did a really good job and figured out most of the list/IG page I had made, and she walked our dog for all the daytime walks. I was really glad she was able to do so much of her work alone this week.  But, we still had to do our last page of math for the week on Saturday.

We had a really good “Nature Hike” week on the trails around our apartments.  I do see how the Lord worked things out for us here more and more—the woods, the recycling, being so close to the Aldi grocery store, close to the downtown library…I do feel thankful for those things.

HOUSE: There is no new news regarding our house in Indiana...right now is the wrong season to be selling a house!!!!  I'm praying for it to sell, and for a new home for us---asap!

VAN: Well, my van is back from it's THIRD trip to the expensive automotive repair shop.  I'm glad!  Now we can go somewhere again!

MICE: Just an update on the mice in our apartment…we haven’t had any! Praise the Lord!  I think we have gone three weeks now!

SNAIL: Well, another week of the snail living!  We have all sorts of tubes sticking out of the tiny tank…but it seems happy!  The smell is getting better too--- I think Chelle was right when she said that perhaps we were over-feeding it, and the food was gunking up the tank.  Thanks, Chelle!

Busy Hands this week: Pictures in a few days will be added to this post!

Dd took a cardboard pencil box and covered it with duct tape, then covered that with her favorite quotes from various books.

This is the "infinity scarf" or "cowl" I made for Dd.  It wraps around three times.

She unraveled this---it was going to be a hat, but she messed up a few times

She made a sheath for her sword.  It is made of cardboard, duct tape, and glow-in-the-dark paint

This is going to be a 'muffler-scarf'

She made a stuffed animal out of duct tape and stuffing

She started on a hat for Pappa

She made a necklace

She is crocheting a “camo poncho”.

She made me an AWESOME blue crocheted hat (like she made for James and Andrew).

She made granola from scratch.

She made her own stencils to make herself a  “Camp Jupiter” shirt, she wanted one for Christmas, but didn't get it (or a Camp Half-Blood shirt); so she made her own!

And then covered it with glow-in-the-dark:

And she re-did the Camp Half-Blood shirt too:
I really like the horse she made!

She made baked cheese chicken breasts.

Giz sent us a “Dog Coat”, but it needs Velcro sewed on to fit Sophie specifically, Dd has started on that.

Worked all week on a letter to her Indy friend, Shiloh—mailed.

ME: I am knitting a blue scarf for me (same yarn that Dd used to make my hat).  I completed the red cardinal bird that I had been working on for Aunt Ruth.  Now if I can get myself motivated to go to the Post Office and mail it!

The "Birthday Bird" I made for my Aunt Ruth's January birthday

I don’t know exactly how many years Dd has been into Percy Jackson and the Greek myths that come along with his series, but she has been focused on this topic for years now.  As Rick Riordan (the author) continued to write, she continued to follow.  We were scheduled to study the Greeks with this Sonlight Core (Core G), but we are doing it in a much extended way.  I think it will take us about another two weeks to complete the book that I have decided on continuing (The Book of the Ancient Greeks, and the Teachers and Students guides that go along also.).  I have heard of other homeschoolers taking two years to do this core, but I hope we don’t take that long.

Bible:

We are continuing to extend our card in Veritas Press: Chronicles Through Malachi.  Since VP didn’t list any specific chapters to read, we are going through the book bit by bit.

Card 79: In Process

The Ministry of Jeremiah

Jeremiah 626-580 BC

We read the chapters 11,12,13,15, 17, & 18 in our Bibles and with our Believer’s Bible Commentary.
My favorite bible section this week:

Jeremiah 17:7-8New International Version (NIV)

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord,
    whose confidence is in him.

They will be like a tree planted by the water
that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes;
    its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought
and never fails to bear fruit.”

Math:

Math U See: Pre-Algebra

We are wrapping up our review of the lessons we have completed in our book.  I copied out the “A” page from the lessons we were to review on a blank page so Dd could watch the presentation and re-do the lesson.  Some of the lessons were not available online, at the Worksheet Generator site that MUS offers!  It appears that after Pre-Algebra there isn’t a worksheet generator available!  That is disappointing as I really do use that site often.  Dd re-did the following lessons:

10, 11,12,13, & 14

She will do the review for lesson15 on Monday and then Tuesday we will start again with NEW material…our review being completed, and ready for the last half of this material.

Famous Men of Greece

Pg’s 13-31

We have had a bit of trouble with this book, since Dd had read and then listened to the audio of Rick Riordan’s Greek Gods, many of these stories are not new to her, and many times we have already heard the story repeatedly.  This is such a great book, filled with such LOVELY illustrations, but, we have already passed much of this information.  We will continue to go through it and search for new information.

Audio 1: (Dd and I)

These Happy Golden Years by Laura Ingalls Wilder: completed

This is a terrific audio!  LOVED it!  This is a continuation of the Little House on the Prairie/Town stories.  Mary goes to her College for the Blind, and Laura studies and then begins her teaching career.  Almonzo generously takes her home from her teaching post each weekend.  The house that she is staying in is very stressful, as the mother of the house is half insane (at one point, Laura wakes up to this woman yelling at her husband in the middle of the night, with a butcher knife in her hand!  Laura refused to go to sleep that night, for fear of her life! Gasp!  Almonzo slowly grows on Laura, and in the end she agrees to marry him!  He builds her a home, on his stead, and we leave the newlyweds on their porch looking to the future.  This is probably the saddest one of the stories---Laura, our favorite home-body, leaves home for good…sniff. Sniff.

Weekly Schedules
When we extend our core out, we use Sonlight's "Additional Schedule Page"(s).  I make one for me, and the things we do together, and I make one for Dd, for the things she will do alone.  This week, with Dd not feeling well, she didn't have a lot of things on her solo page.  But, then Friday while I had a migraine she had to do the items on my page by herself.
