SL Core G Week 7 December 1-5, 2014

SL Core
G  Week 7
December 1-5, 2014

Dd made squirrel treats this week.  She took corn cobs from our Indiana house, and put peanut butter and sunflower seeds on them, then froze them in our freezer, with a skewer through them, and then placed them outside for the squirrels.  The squirrels had them striped clean in no-time!

We have started learning about the Greeks in our Core G, as of this week, and Dd couldn't be happier about that!  I still feel like we could add more in about the Egyptians, but will just keep moving forward and perhaps add a book on the Egyptians in later.

I try to add in personal things that happen during the week on my blog, so that when I come back and read what we did that week, I'll be able to remember the details with the help of my few comments.  If I had to say something *specific* that happened this week, that is really unusual, it would be to mention that this is the week that our apartment kitchen was taken over by mice!  Dh and I both found mice droppings and about freaked out!  The apartment company had an exterminator come in, while we were out, and "treat" our apartment.  Well, their idea of helping us was to put on trap in our living room (where the mice don't go!).  So, Dh went out and bought 4 traps and put them in our kitchen.  I had captured and taken out one mouse (taken to the woods and released), but then when the signs were still present, Dh took over the job with his traps.  The first night he caught 3, then during the next day 1, then the next night 3 more, then the next night 1, and finally last night we had ZERO mice in our trap.  In all the places we have lived, this is the first time we have had to deal with mice like this!  But, I guess I'll remember this week!!!

My daughter was fighting a bug this week, and was so tired she said her brain wasn't working.  Wednesday was the worst day for her, and so we watched the movie from 1981 called Clash Of The Titans during our lesson time.  We also went to the downtown library twice this week; which was a nice change of pace.  It helped that the weather this week was SO nice!  We have been going on Nature Hikes (with our dog, Sophie) every day.  I'm really enjoying having access to a trail through the woods here in the apartment complex.  It doesn't look like anyone else uses the trail, as I've never seen another footprint besides ours.

At the library

With the race to Christmas on, we have been working hard on our projects--gifts for our family and friends.  Dd unraveled the red poncho she was making for Aunt April.  She was knitting it, and has now decided to crochet it (so it can be completed in time!).

Free typing program "Nitro Type"

Nitro Type
A free online site, for advancing typing ability.  Since I thought we would only be in our apartment for a few months, I didn't pack all our homeschooling resources.  Normally my daughter uses Typing Instructor for her typing lessons, but I somehow didn't bring it with us to the apartment.  So, we have been looking online for some free typing games, since our Typing Instructor must be in a box somewhere.  My daughter found a typing site called "Nitro Type" and has really, really enjoyed it.  She literally asks to do it!  And this is coming from the same kid who put up such a fuss on having to do Typing Instructor previously.

I think one of reasons she likes this program is that you can invite your friends to play the same time you are playing; which makes it more fun for them.   There are around five cars on the track, and how fast and how accurate you type, compared to the others, determines who wins.  The races are fairly fast; around one to two minutes of typing per race.  At the end of each race; your accuracy and words per minute (WPM) are listed.  This feature, the accuracy and WPM, has really encouraged my daughter to continue to strive for improvement.  You can click on your stats and see what your accuracy, wpm, and use of "nitro's" are.  A "nitro" is a credit that you can earn, and then use during your race if you want to.  The "nitro" will allow  you to skip over a hard word.  Dd always checks to see how many nitro's are used, at the end of each race, by the other competitors.

As her wpm and accuracy have improved, the game moves her up into races with players at her level.  So, when she first started this game, she had about 26 wpm-as did the other racers.  But, now that she is typing in the upper 30's, she is racing with other people who also type that fast.

Sonlight Core G Week 6 "A" (LOW) Nov. 24-30, 2014

Sonlight Core G
Week 6 "A" (LOW)
Nov. 24-30, 2014

We had a very nice, short week regarding our lessons.  Wednesday, Pappa's parents arrived for their first real visit with us in Michigan.  Pappa found them a hotel to spend two nights, fairly close to us.  Dd and I did lessons Monday through Wednesday.  Monday's are never highly productive for us, but we did the best we could considering Dd's suffers from "Monday-itis"!  That is my name for the syndrome of 'blah' that happens just about every Monday with Dd!  It is so dependable and reliable each Monday!  It is a good thing that I know what to expect each Monday and never plan for that day to be very academic!

I had TWO doctor appointments this week, and believe I have been blessed with finding a new doctor for us.  She seemed really smart, informed, and let me talk about my problems...and she had an idea of new medicine to try for my migraines!  She also prefaced it with saying that many insurance companies won't agree to allow it, so we will have to wait and see if it will be an option for me, or not.  Don't you love how our insurance company's get to decide which medications we can or can't take---not our doctors!  I really have such strong feelings about this subject, but my feelings are probably not something you want to hear!  But, I've been suffering SO much after having to give up another medication that was working SO well for me, b/c my insurance wouldn't allow it either.  Moving on now...

We are getting into a habit of taking snow hikes each day; though Dd skipped Saturday and Sunday!  But, I am very happy to find an outlet for me to be outside, surrounded by trees.  Plus, there is a wonderful CRANE that lives right where we walk, and it has flown away from us twice this week.  We really get a great look at it when it is flying away.  In Indiana, we always had cranes on the little reserve pond right beside our house, and would get to watch them all the time.  It is great having a crane here too!  I just love those big birds!!!

Wednesday night, Dd wanted to dissect the deer heart that Pappa had brought back for her.  So, Giz got right in the kitchen with her (and me, too) to help and watch.  I put a post below this post with pictures.

We have been busy beavers, working on our Christmas presents!  I will do a post in a day or two with pictures of our progress.  I finished the gift for my mom, and the two stuffed animal chipmunks for my two nephews, and started on a scarf for my MIL, "Giz", and bought the  yard for the Camo Blanket that Pappa asked for, for his Christmas gift.

Veritas Chronicles through Malachi Enhanced SET--Enhanced CD and Cards (Bible)

Bible:
We are using Veritas Press's bible program, and enjoy it SO much.  It really is a jumping off place for us.  It gives assignments, and suggests we use a Children's Bible; but we use our own bible, plus I've added in a bible commentary that I've found VERY informative.  Plus, we add in other resources too; but VP schedules it out for us, and we can add lots more to it than they plan (sort of like how we do Sonlight).
