Percy Jackson's Greek Gods by Rick Riordan

 Written by Dd:
Review of Percy Jackson's Greek Myths-
Fellow Percy Jackson fans, so far this book is one of the most informative books describing the Greek Myths that I've read.  It is written the way a sixteen year old Percy would write.  There are lots of jokes and even the chapter names are funny!  If you are interested in the Greek Myths I would definitely read this book.  One warning: It's really hard to put down!

I would give it five stars!

The NEW Heroes of Olympus book, The Blood Of Olympus, is comming out on October 7, 2014!

Percy Jackson's Greek Gods by Rick Riordan and John Rocco

So far she has read the following chapters (and what interesting titles for these chapters!):

*The Beginning and Stuff
*The Golden Age of Cannibalism
*The Olympians Bash Some Heads
*Zeus
*Hestia Chooses Bachelor Number Zero
*Demeter Turns Into Grainzilla
*Persephone Marries Her Stalker
*Hera Gets a Little Cuckoo
*Hades Does Home Improvement
*Poseidon Gets Salty
*Zeus Kills Everyone
*Athena Adopts Hankerchief
*You Gotta Love Aphrodite
*Ares, The Manly Man's Manly Man

How about those titles?! Funny!  Dd has spent hours and hours on this book, and only likes it more as she gets deeper into it!

LEGO An Unexpected Journey = Hobbit set

LEGO An Unexpected Journey = Hobbit set

Dd received this kit for completing her Core F.  After she put the kit together she built a "Hobbiton" for the house to be apart of.  I'd call it a little town, but she insists on the term "Hobbiton"....  Here is what she has been doing:

I like how she used white thread to make reins

She used green paper and colored pencils to make a road

Sonlight Core G  Week 1  August 25-29, 2014
(and finished Core F!)

(She won a new LEGO kit--(for completing Core F)-there are pictures of her "Hobbiton" throughout this post to show the town she made...roads, water/stream/river, poppy flowers, plants...she made the road out of paper.)

This week was a bit 'off' for us.   "Monday-itis" reared it's ugly head on Monday.  Tuesday and Thursday I had such a migraine that Dd had to work alone.  Wednesday and Friday were somewhat productive, though I was building a headache both days.  I hate that my migraines get in the way of doing our lessons, and I am working on a plan for Dd.  She did a good job, especially on Thursday, of taking her education into her own hands and working without me.  Friday, after Dh got home from work (and buying new tires for his car-yikes-) we loaded up our auto and headed to Indiana.  Our house needed to be mowed, and we figured with a three day weekend (Labor Day) we could paint our fence, picnic table, and 2 story play house.  (It took a LOT of work, but we did complete the job.)

Monday and Wednesday we did go to our community pool and get a lot of swimming and playing in!

I know we only had a short time frame for being able to swim, and wanted to take advantage of it before it closes.

Sophie at the Dog Park

The "Dog Park" has become an almost daily trip for our dog, Sophie along with Dd and me.

Core F still had one last book to finish---Water Sky--before we were officially done with Core F.  Dd finished the book on Monday--she spent most of the day reading it!  But, she couldn't wait any longer to find out what  her prize was going to be for finishing Core F!  I had told her she was really going to like it!  She won a LEGO kit : An Unexpected Journey---Bilbo Baggins Hobbit home.  Well, you can get what she did Monday night....she put the kit together and then she spent the rest of the week building a "Hobbit Village".  She had the best time making this village and signs...worked on it all week! She just kept making improvements.
She also spent a good amount of time preparing for "A's" birthday, coming up on Sun. Aug. 31st.

She made him one of her homemade cards, and a "Zombie" bracelet--the threaded, woven, 'friendship' kind of bracelet's.

Dd started her own blog.  She has been begging to do a blog of her own to show her photographs.  I have to say, I was really surprised at how well she did!

Dd had another big KEYBOARDING week.  I have to admit, my heart smiles hearing her play!  She just has such a good memory for songs, and enjoys playing.

As far as cooking this week---She made a chocolate cake, no-bake cookies, mastered OMELETS this week, and did her scrambled eggs (she is an old pro at that already).  She did a good job all all her cooking this week; except she didn't make icing for the chocolate cake!  But, it still got eaten..happily!

We read and studied Dd's request of Psalm 25:

Psalm 25[a]

Of David.

In you, Lord my God,
    I put my trust.
I trust in you;
do not let me be put to shame,
nor let my enemies triumph over me.
No one who hopes in you
will ever be put to shame,
but shame will come on those
    who are treacherous without cause.
Show me your ways, Lord,
    teach me your paths.
Guide me in your truth and teach me,
for you are God my Savior,
and my hope is in you all day long.
Remember, Lord, your great mercy and love,
for they are from of old.
Do not remember the sins of my youth
    and my rebellious ways;
according to your love remember me,
    for you, Lord, are good.
Good and upright is the Lord;
therefore he instructs sinners in his ways.
He guides the humble in what is right
    and teaches them his way.
10 All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful
toward those who keep the demands of his covenant.
11 For the sake of your name, Lord,
forgive my iniquity, though it is great.
12 Who, then, are those who fear the Lord?
He will instruct them in the ways they should choose.[b]
13 They will spend their days in prosperity,
and their descendants will inherit the land.
14 The Lord confides in those who fear him;
he makes his covenant known to them.
15 My eyes are ever on the Lord,
for only he will release my feet from the snare.
16 Turn to me and be gracious to me,
for I am lonely and afflicted.
17 Relieve the troubles of my heart
and free me from my anguish.
18 Look on my affliction and my distress
and take away all my sins.
19 See how numerous are my enemies
and how fiercely they hate me!
20 Guard my life and rescue me;
do not let me be put to shame,
for I take refuge in you.
21 May integrity and uprightness protect me,
because my hope, Lord,[c] is in you.
22 Deliver Israel, O God,
    from all their troubles!

Language Arts:

She did her own Writing Program/ Caligraphy this week by printing out the fonts from various types of print--like Hobbit font, Star Wars font, Narnia font...and she did a lot of writing using those print outs as a guide.

SL LA Week 1---started

Daily Grams 7:
pages: 115-118

Math:
We did another week of printing out math sheets from the Math U See "Worksheet Generator" for lessons 1-5.  Dd was still having trouble with +, -, /, and x positive and negative numbers.  I wanted her to be completely solid before we moved on.  This has been really hard for her grasp since there are different rules for (+ & -) vs (x & /).

Science:

Exploring Creation with Chemistry and Physics (Young Explorer Series) by Jeannie Fulbright

Apologia, Chemistry and Physics
pages 52-54 on her own and a full page of note taking.

Core F's Add-In's BOOK LIST

Sonlight Core F's Add-In's BOOK LIST

Core F was our sixth core with Sonlight (SL).  We started in 2008 with Core "K"- (our Kindergarten) but I think the title has changed to Core A.  I should start off first by explaining that we are the type of Sonlighter's that do the core a bit differently than assigned.  We can take as little as 36 weeks to do a core, or (like with Core D) take up to 72 weeks to complete a core!  It might take us 2 weeks to complete one week, or we might add-in more books to help achieve a thorough saturation with our subjects and time periods.  I like how SL is my spine, and I can slip in other materials along with SL's materials to personalize it for us.  We do pretty much everything the Instructor's Guide tells us to do with each core, and add more things to enrich it.  I understand a lot of people don't connect with some of SL's books, and drop some here and there---but, for some reason we have never had a problem with our SL books or assignments.  I have had to edit a bit here or there if the material was too gory or inappropriate for us; but not much.

Some of the books and things that we found helpful while doing Core F:

CNN STUDENT NEWS (for our current events assignments each day) can be found at: http://www.cnn.com/studentnews/
*One thing we didn't do until the very end, but wish I had thought of earlier, was to give my child a spiral notebook and ask her to write at least one sentence about what we saw on each day's video.  It would be really interesting to see 36 weeks of her comments regarding the recent current events.  I saw this suggestion on Ambleside Online's website.

YOUTUBE.COM
We used Youtube on most of the country's we studied.  I didn't keep track of all the video's we watched, and some we only watched parts of.  But, my point is that we really appreciated being able to go to youtube and search "China", "Aboriginal Art", "New Zealand", etc. etc. and SEE the countries for ourselves in action.  There were documentary shows and travel shows on every place we looked up!  It really is a treasure trove of visuals to go along with all the written materials we had.  I finally figured out to write down which video's we watched at the end of the core.

GOOGLE EARTH is another wonderful resource that we really enjoyed and used frequently.

This core, more than any other core previously, Dd wanted to spend a lot of her reading time on books that didn't pertain to our core---like Lamplighter books, a lot of "Classics", Greek Mythology, and other personal interest books.  I'm not going to list our family books, just the books that might give you some suggestions on books to add to Core F.  All of our non-core related books are listed in each week that we read them; like usual.  This is just a specific post about some of the add-in's we added.

There were a few books we used almost every week.
For Geography--which was very much part of this core!
(I also made a few copies of the blank maps for each section so we could fill them out a few times, instead of just doing them one time.  I found we remembered more by doing them a few times over the time we were in each section.  A place that we were only at for one week, we only did one map.  A place that we stayed at for a few weeks we did those maps 1-2 times per week.)

National Geographic Atlas of the World, Eighth Edition by National Geographic

*National Geographic Atlas of the World
Google Earth online

Material World: A Global Family Portrait by Peter Menzel, Charles C. Mann

*Material World
With books like Material World, Hungry Planet...etc. They have spreads about lots of different places around the world.  As we would move from one country to the next, we would look up how each country compared to each other and to us.  We would use this section of books repeatedly throughout the core with each place we studied.
