SL Core D- Week 16 Aug 15-19th 2011

We have been enjoying some more experiments with the TOPS: Green Thumb: Radish book.  Also this week we have started and finished:

Mr. Revere and I: Being an Account of certain Episodes in the Career of Paul Revere,Esq. as Revealed by his Horse by Robert Lawson

What a very good book!  It was 'suppose' to be an "Advanced Reader" for Dd in Core 3/D; but I wanted to read it too.  The story is told from Paul Reveres' horses' point of view--Sherry.  She is from England, and came over with their military.  Over the course of a few months and experiences on both sides she decides she wants to be  "Free and Independent"!

Dd is reading:
The Cabin Faced West by Jean Fritz

She is liking it very much; but it did seem to start slow for her.  The first few days, she didn't want to read beyond her assigned reading.  Now she is way beyond what she had been scheduled!  She could have finished it today; but wanted to savor it one more day and finish it up tomorrow.

Today a  good friend of mine, mailed us:

Martha Washington: America's First Lady (Childhood of Famous Americans) by Jean Brown Wagoner

It will be read in the near future.  It certainly has been a lot of fun studying and reading about the American Revolution.  I also have the following book that we own pulled out for reading soon:

Revolutionary John Adams by Cheryl Harness

I love reading about John Adams, and we love anything written by Cheryl Harness - so this will be a bonus.  Of course, it would be great to read 1776 by David McCullough; but I don't think my Dd is ready for that book!  Give her a few more years before she gets addicted to D. McCullough, like her parents.  For now we will stick to Jean Fritz, Cheryl Harness, etc.

Tuesday we had a nice visit with one of Dd's friends from LHE.  We went swimming at their neighborhood pool; sans the heater for the pool!  It was still nice to visit.

Today in our package, my dear friend is also letting me compare my old version SL Science to her new version SL Science 3 and now I will be able to match up my current Student Sheets with her current Teaching Sheets!  When I bought them used, I was told they would match up; but they didn't.  Now I can do a better job with our science paperwork.  We do an excellent job on all the experiments but we needed a little help with the paperwork!  I am thankful for my friend!!

This has been a Piano Month--lots of music!

This is just a rough draft for now.  I will come back and fix this entry when I have time.  We've had a good week--lots of science.

Besides our SL books I wanted to log the books Dd chose to read on her own:
"Seekers: Kallik's Adventure by Erin Hunter
"Avatar:The Last Airbender"Books 1 & 3  by Michael Dante DiMartino

DVD: Mandie and the Secret Tunnel

Sonlight Books finished -Week 16

Aug 3, 2011 Nature Day at Plainfield Christian Church

I wish I had pictures to go along with our special day; but alas- I don't!  One of these days I will get a cell phone; one with the ability to take photo's.  I think I would use the picture feature more than the calling feature!

The family that did the Thursday Girls Bible Study invited us to go to Nature Day with them.  I almost said 'no'; but then she mentioned they needed some helpers...and I am always a sucker for helping, so we agreed.

The kids were broken up into small groups; we were the "Fireflies".  There were 11 kids in our group.  We were assigned an order to go through the circuit of varying stations; and we were off!

Station One: The Garden & The Water Cycle
Here we saw three different tomato plants, planted in either sand, or topsoil and the third plant was in the shade.  Boy, was there a difference in how much the plants thrived or didn't-it was really, really apparent how much better the topsoil-in full sun-grew.  We discussed how clay soil is good for ponds and why.  The kids pour water in buckets of sand, topsoil, and clay and saw how the water was absorbed.  Our presenter had a greenhouse from last year to show the kids how with a little dirt, water, and seeds this greenhouse was thriving without ever getting opened.  The water cycle was constantly moving and doing it's job.

Station Two: Fishing Station
Here the kids all got their own fishing rod and worm and they were off.  Many of the kids had no idea how to fish.  That was a big surprise for me.  Many had no clue how to cast out the line.  I was running back and forth the whole time -taking bluegill off lines, putting worms on the hook, casting out the lines and trying to show them all how to do it for themselves!  Many of the kids said this station was their favorite.  One boy caught a BIG catfish; it was so big it broke the line when he tried to lift it out of the water to unhook it.  This pond was really stocked well.

Station Three: Observation Station
This was in a big field with metal chairs spaced throughout; each chair all by itself in a remote location.  The kids were given a clipboard and a pencil and told to go find a nice quiet location to sit, meditate, pray, draw, and think about God's creations.  The kids came back after 15 minutes with a list of the neat things they saw or shared their drawings from nature.

Station Four: Bird's Nests Station
Here the kids discussed where various birds would nest.  What type of bird would build it's nest in the tops of trees?  What type of bird would build on the ground?  What do birds who build on the ground do to keep attention off their nests?  (Killdeer examples)  What birds build near water?  We discussed ingenious examples such as Cowbirds who lay their eggs in other birds nests--that parasite!  Then the kids had lots of materials to build their own nests.  They were broken up into three groups: water building bird nests, predator bird nests, and robin-average bird nests.  My dd wanted to build the Robin's nest.  They took a "v" spot in a tree and build up the grasses to form a nest.  There was a bucket with water that had tennis balls in it to show how Robin's rub mud on themselves and then rub it off in their nests to get mud onto the nest.  The kids really enjoyed that part!  It was a very cool station.  There was a table with different bird's nest for the kids to look at and hollow logs with old bird nest holes and various broken eggs that had been found.

Station Five: Creation
The kids and myself had to crawl into a plastic tent inside the church.  The 'tent' was really for a dome shape to show the video.  It was a computer generated show about the creation, and then another show about our solar system and the stars.  It was a cool demonstration.

*Lunch*

Station Six: Tadpole & Stream/Creek Life
This was the other "hit" for the kids.  Here they got nets of all sizes and got to find tadpoles, bugs, bettles, spiders, crawdads, and small fish-bluegills.  It was amazing the amount of tadpoles these kids were able to catch!  I bet there was about 40 tadpoles.  The man that ran this station was from McCloud Park and this was his area of expertise.  He brought print-outs of various bugs and critters that we were finding and we could look up the bug we had caught.  My dd really, really loved this station and didn't want to leave it!

Station Seven: Plant Cycle
We went to a hedge-row and saw a big tree that had been turning to mulch for quite a long time.  There were lots of bugs and decomposition going on.   We saw an acorn that had grown and become a seedling.  It has root hairs and a tap root and had been doing well; until it had become our display.  This was a good discussion station-about life and death; plant cycle and life cycle.

Station Eight: Waste Water Cycle
There were two woman from the Waste Water Management to discuss how litter and oil, etc. get into our water system/septic/sewer.  They had a fun demonstration using kool-aid, chocolate jimmies, tea, lemonaide powder, etc. etc. into water to show how little things can really mess up our lakes, rivers, streams, etc.  They also had lots of photo's showing a lake on fire in Ohio b/c of all the trash and chemicals that had collected in that lake.  They showed all kinds of litter pictures.

Station Nine: Level
This was perhaps my favorite station.  The man had a few fun hands-on experiments for the kids to do themselves showing how we can find level with simple things like string and a weight to make our own "Plumb-Bob".  He had a clear tube/hose to show how to build a bridge over a creek by filling the hose with water until each side leveled itself out.  That was really cool.  The kids each took turns doing this experiment.  He had brought long levels to show how level the simple methods had been successful.

This was a very full day, full of learning.  My dd and I couldn't figure out who had more fun; her or me!!!  I wanted to write out all the details in case I ever need to do a project like this again.  It was really well thought out and really fun.

SL Core D- Week 14 July 4-July 8 th 2011

We have had a big activity week; which is so unlike our normal schedule.  In the winter, we can go a week without any 'event'.  This season of 'go' is about pushing me to my limit!  Here is our weekly activities:

Saturday (7-2) We found some things on sale at Lowe's so we  planted more blueberry, strawberry, blackberry bushes, fig tree, and we still have a grape vine to plant.

Sunday (7-3) Church and then off to Randy's house for his annual fireworks party.  This year there were lots of children and dd really got to play a lot.  The fireworks were loud; but fun.

Monday (7-4) Dh off work so he taught dd how to change oil.  Dd pretty much did everything and changed the car's oil with minimal help.  She was ready to play (on her 'razor' scooter) while I did pretty much the whole van's oil change.  Dh was there to guide me through the process.   I hadn't changed either of these automobile before and was rusty. No formal lessons today-holiday.
Then we (all 3) went to the new YMCA and swam and swam!

Tuesday (7-5)Dd and I went to the YMCA and swam laps.  They have flippers for anyone who wants to swim with them; so she was having a great time.  With the flippers on, she could swim all the way to the bottom of the pool - 7 feet down!   We went to the library after swimming; b/c I forgot we had a class there in the afternoon.  So we ended up going to the library twice! We headed to our library for a class called : Travel Club: Russia.  It was okay; not as exciting as the one on India.  We fit in our lessons.  Dd checked out the "playaway" (book-on-tape) Little Women and is really, really enjoying this story.

Wednesday (7-6) The pool at the YMCA was closed for technical difficulties.  So, we did our lessons and waited until it was after 5 pm (didn't want to burn) and rode our bikes to the neighborhood pool.  It was jam-packed.  We had to dodge people like crazy.  It made me glad for the Y, where we usually have a little space.  We managed a good amount of reading and lessons in our day.  We watched the Narnia movie: Voyage of the Dawn Treader.  We love Narnia!  We've read or listened on audio to the whole story at least once or twice already.

Thursday (7-7) This was our whopper of a day.  In the morning we went to our friend's house for her Girl's Bible Study.  They also made a craft - decorating flip-flops.  Then we went home and had lunch.  Then we went to the library for a class called: "Trash to Treasure".  They made flower cups out of recycled plastic bottles.  Then Dd played on the library computers while I met with my friend to enter a class for the HBHE (Heritage Builders Home Educators).  I am planning a field trip for children Dd's age with the homeschool group-to go to the Children's Museum's "Science Port" and do an experiment with the staff.  Then we came home and got our math lessons done and then met Dh at the YMCA.  They wouldn't let children in the lap lanes, and the other pool was full with lessons; so Dh and Dd went and played in the play room while I did my laps.  I shared my lap lane with 3 other women...it was busy!

Friday (7-8) Lessons and a movie at the library--Tangled (which we have not seen).

SL Core D Week 13 "LOW" June 27-July 1, 2011

Monday we had a *special* at the library: MAD Science Spectacular with Sizzling Sam.  He put on quite a show; there was lots of fire and booms and flash (which caused lots of babies to cry, by the way).  He did make science look very exciting; and he filled up the children's area in the library.  That is the only show (at a library) that I had to actually 'stand' through.

Tuesday we had a Messy Science class at the library.  This class was a lot of fun.  Ms Laura did some cool experiments and the kiddo's got to help out.  She had a plate full of Vit D (fatty) milk and put in some drops of food coloring and then put a q-tip in that had "dawn" dish detergent into the mix to see the colors run from the soap.  Then she did the same experiment with Fat Free/Skim milk to see if the reaction would be the same or different--it was the same.
She also did the exploding egg in a glass jar with a small flame inside the bottle.  When we did ours at home, we had an explosive reaction, but her egg only slide into the neck of the bottle and didn't pop and explode like our egg at home did.  I was glad dd didn't say anything to make Ms Laura feel bad.

Thursday dd has continued on with her Girl's Bible Study at a friends house.  Each week they make a cool craft and also play a game.  This week they glued fabric on a clear glass bottle (think antique milk bottle) and finished the piece off with a nice daisy.

This has been the week of PIANO.  Dd has really enjoyed playing her keyboard-every day!  She has really gotten serious.  I had mentioned that when she really got serious with her keyboarding and reading music that we would think about a violin and violin lessons.  I hope I can follow through with all that and that she can play for more than one week before needing a break.

This week we did two weeks of All About Spelling(AAS), some Teaching Textbooks 4 (TT4), some Math U See -Gamma (MUS), "Sword Fighting" for Bible,  Math U See Songs disc, focusing on learning the 4's skip counting song.  We started back up with First Language Lessons 3 (FLL)and Writing With Ease 2 (WWE).  We also fit in some Reason For Handwriting (RFH); and dd mailed a letter to G&G.

Our weekly books/audio/video:Johnny Tremain : (Mon, Tues, Wed, Thur, and finished on Friday)

SL Core D -Week 13 "A" June 20-24, 2011

SL Week 13--We've spent 26 weeks on Core 3/D so far.
  Monday June 20, 2011

This is a "LOW" left-over week; and just in time too!

We were so busy last week with all our activities (and me not feeling well) that we didn't finish up our weeks worth of IG.  We will fit in last week's work that was left undone with this weeks work.  It is very hard trying to keep up our schedule with all the extra's going on.  From gardening, planting, library classes, church activities and our many fun books that we add-in.

Monday after our lessons, we went to the library for our Travel Club: Germany.  The class was very good; but so far India was my favorite.  We had music, food, pictures, crafts, and a book.

We rec'd our Math U See: Gamma set today from UPS.  Dd is doing TT (Teaching Textbooks 4) already; but I felt we weren't getting enough practice with our basic multiplication drill.  We have used MUS for a few years now; and I have found I appreciate the repetition built into this system.  I am glad we are trying TT; and it is especially enjoyed by Dd.  Dd would be perfectly happy to stick with TT only; but I am not convinced at it's solidness yet.  I think it is going to fast for dd and there is no way to slow it down or repeat items that are more complicated and need further review.  So, I have added MUS back into our school.

We are still reading Johnny Tremain.  We are getting close to finishing Artemis Fowl; and really enjoying this book tremendously.  We have already had one book club meeting about his book; and will have another in a few weeks.

History ADD-IN's:Dd is finishing up reading (it has taken longer than usual) :
