Winter Nature Woods Pictures
Blizzard, Sand-hill Cranes, Ducks, Bird songs

Hello, Friends!
A week without major much trouble, a welcome change. The only major problem was Dd had picked up a bug and grew weaker/sicker as each day passed.  Poor kid had a cold, with lots of coughing, but she never does well when she is sick.  She didn't do any treadmill or exercise this week as she stuck to lounging as she did her homework.

Signs of Spring!!
I was delighted to see actual signs of spring among the cold temperatures and snow.

We definitely saw the sun on numerous occasions; which in itself has been absent most of this winter.

There were a few hints of color in the sky at sunrise and sunset which reminded me of how colorful it can be here.

Saturday, I saw buds on many branches--very tiny, but they were there!

Birds, Birds, Birds!
March 1st I heard a flock of Sandhill Cranes flying overhead. This has been a very active week for birds.  I've seen a flock of ducks, around 20, flying past our house and I never see that many flying altogether.  The birds are singing again in the morning; which is lovely!!  Although our weather this week was horrible, I was very appreciative of all the hints of spring coming.

Chickens:
I'm still having to clean out the chicken coop more than once a week due to the hens being inside most days.

They did get out (to the enclosed outside pen) a few hours, here and there on a few days, but most of the time they have been forced inside the coop where they are warm and dry.  Our compost bins are hopefully going to really give us a lot of good fertile soil for the garden as a result.

Again this week I have been making at least one batch of rice for their breakfast.  I add in a few cups of oil, scrambled eggs, egg shells, finally used up the last of the expired flax seed, expired corn meal, left-overs, and 6 cups of their feed---stir it all up and serve.  I've been taking a rake and clearing a long path to use to lay down a line of food so all the girls can get an equal opportunity to get in on the big meal of the day.

Ms. Lemon---my favorite, she's a Bantam and talks to me all the time!

They always have their grains available to them, but with the bitter cold, we've been having the past 9-10 weeks I've wanted to make sure they all had enough food to keep warm.  I should know this is over-kill and my chickens should be fine without all my help, but I just can't seem to fully believe it!  The few times I've had a migraine and not provided them their special breakfast they throw a fit and fuss so loudly when I reappear...wish I could share that display to all!  They do get really loudly fussy.

All-in-all, the girls are all doing well this week for the most part.  I do have one big Buff Orpington (Henny Penny) that has been spending most of her time standing in a corner behind the food stand and I'm concerned and watching her.

Chickens: Wood ash from Woodstove
I read online that you can use (room temperature) ashes from your wood stove for the chickens to use for there dry-baths.  I'd never heard of this but gave it a try and they do like it!!!  Go figure.  The hardest part was finding the right box for the job--I found one just a little smaller than the size of our cat litter boxes.  A cat litter box would work great, but I'm already using all mine!  It is dirty, but as a last result, in a pinch, it does the trick. I can't wait for the girls to get outside and get to have real dirt baths soon.

Their feathers and general appearance look so pitiful I bought a bag of the expensive "Feather Fixer" chicken crumble to see if it would help.

Owls:
The Barred Owls are back in our area of the woods!  It is fun hearing them talk back and forth to each other.  I haven't seen them this winter, but I do hear them.

Can you spot the owl?

Migraines:
Only one migraine this week!  Unfortunately, it happened on Saturday when I wanted to be working with Dh getting something accomplished.  But, that did allow him to work on his workbench without distractions.

Dh: Darling Husband:
I've not shared much on Dh the past few weeks since he has returned to work.  We haven't had any problems with his eye, just in trying to get glasses that work with two drastically different prescriptions.  He had a new pair made but they were impossible for him to actually see out of as they made everything look doubled.

Ah, you have to love Honeysuckle!  She is something special!

For now, he is having to wear one contact in the normal eye and then wears 'reading glasses' to read and do computer work.  Now he bends his head down and looks over the top of the reading glasses to talk to me and looks like a stereotypical old man!  It is interesting watching my spouse get older; good thing I haven't aged a day in these twenty years of marriage!!  Ha! Ha!

His work is doing good and he is *trying* to stay below a 45 hour work week.  This week, after many months of beloved labor he finished a project he had been working on here at home, in the shop, making a "workbench."  He made the last 3 or 4 drawers this week to conclude the project.  It really is amazing.  I will try to take pictures to share his major accomplishment.

He has been promising to build me some bookshelves since we moved here and said the workbench project was his practice and learning in order to prevent mistakes on the bookshelves.  It really would be lovely to get to unpack all my books.  I haven't seen all my books since we left Indiana!  I really miss the Christmas picture books!

Dd: Movies: How To Train Your Dragon 3:
Dd asked to go with Hailee to the movies after church on Sunday to see the conclusion of an animated series she has loved for years.  I have to admit, I love this series too!  But, alas, I wasn't invited!  They picked the worst day of the blizzard to go and I can't believe *I* (the worst winter driver) had to go pick her up and drive Hailee home.  In all, I saw 7 different emergency crews going past me in various directions as I waited for the movie to end and the girls to come out.  It was just absolutely crazy weather---winds whipping around, snow all over the roads, snow drifts piling up on the actual roads, super cold....fortunately, most people were smart and stayed home so there wasn't that much traffic to navigate around.  From all the emergency crews I saw, people that did go out were not being very careful.  I was careful.  I was driving SO slow it was almost funny!  Dd apologized for putting us all in this situation, but she did call the theater and did try to get refund on the bought tickets but the teen girl that answered the phone erroneously told her she had to drive in to do so and Dd thought she might as well see the movie if she has to drive in anyway!  Oh well, at least Dd has learned when to say, "Can I speak to the manager, please?"

The blizzard brought down our umbrella and lots of branches

Sunday Surprises:
As I mentioned above,
Sunday was a blizzard day
---horrible weather.  But, that wasn't all!  I woke up to see the wooden rod case holding up all my clothes in my closet had unscrewed from the wall and everything had fallen to the floor.  Oh my.  Not to mention I had a shelf above the rod for shirts and sweaters.  With the blizzard winds there were over 100,000 Michiganders without electricity, but for once, it wasn't our street!  Dh woke up with a headache and was feeling low so he stayed home from church.  After church he did feel up to fixing my closet for me.  I had a Marie Kondo moment when I had ALL my clothes piled up on my bed while he was working in the closet.  I did take this opportunity to go through all my clothes (again) and pull out some things that I could donate as well as take out all the spring and summer clothes that I should have taken out in the fall but didn't have the heart to remove.  Now the amount of clothes on the rod is much improved!

Chores:
There are a few areas that I've excelled in parenting and a few areas that I've failed to teach Dd over the years.  I have unsuccessfully battled my Dd for years about chores.  I was one of those new mothers that ordered Montessori books and cleaning equipment for my child and we "worked together" at ALL our chores EVERY day while she was under 5 years old.  I'm not exactly sure what age all my good intentions fell flat, but somewhere over the years our "working together" at chores had slowly eroded as she was less and less favorable.  To make matters worse, I know no other family, especially in homeschooling families, that has failed so spectacularly as I have in this subject.  All of this to get to this week.  This week Dd asked me to try something new.  She asked me to not remind her to do her kitchen chores or her cat chores, not once, no reminders at all.  She wanted to train herself to see the problem and learn to motivate herself to get it done.  It sounded equally logical as much as her just trying to get a week off from chores, but I thought I'd give her a try.  Long story short, I'll cut to the chase---I went to bed each evening with a messy kitchen.  Two or three times she waited until after 10 PM to start her chores, while I was already in bed.  It really was a super idea, but I couldn't cook or keep my sanity when all the counters were covered with dirty dishes that desperately wanted to be in the dishwasher!  I just thought I'd share one of our weak spots and limitations.

Credit deserved:
I should mention Dd does an amazing job cooking, baking, doing her own laundry, studying, reading, wanting to go to church, bible study, being a good friend...  chores are just a weak area.

Post Office: ReMailed Christmas box
I was so proud of myself, that should be a warning if ever there was one!  I had bought nice picture books that I liked all year for my two young nephews that live in Hawaii.  I got my black Sharpie and Precise black pen and drew and wrote in the front of each book.  I counted out exactly the same number of books for the two boys.  I individually wrapped each book.  I do this each year, but this year, I got them boxed up and took them to our post office by the 20th of November.  I always try to mail these boxes Media Mail because it is way cheaper.  Then around Christmas, I asked my brother if the box had arrived...no!  So, I found my receipt and looked up the tracking number online.  I had written his old address on the box! Oh, Bother!  They didn't have a forwarding address; which I thought was weird since he had only moved about a year ago.  So, around the first week of February, I heard a knock at our door and the post lady had our box in her arm and asking for the $9.00 to get it back.   This week, on Monday, I took the re-wrapped box, with current address, back to the post office and mailed it back to Hawaii.  I paid for it to be shipped for the THIRD time!  I hope those boys enjoy the well-traveled books!!!

It's hard to take a picture that accurately shows all the deer tracks in our woods--here is a picture to try to share the traffic.

Dd's Academic Progress:

Grace Co-Op classes are going well.  I think they only have eleven more weeks of class before they end the semester.

I'm still surprised I am not her only teacher, as I had FULL intention of being her teacher all through high school.

An old HORNET nest from last summer way up in a tree.

I knew there was a chance God might have other plans, but I really didn't think that would be our path.

(I've babysat six volunteer Spruce baby trees this winter, shaking off the snow and caring for them throughout this winter; here is one of them.)

But, I also know that my one rule was that I wouldn't have an only child...and God must have laughed aloud as that was his plan.

So, I have learned to expect the opposite to happen to my most well-planned pursuits.

Feb. 17-23, 2019
Sunshine, Funeral, 90th B-day Party, Root Canal, Movies

Just for fun, I'm posting all my attempts to catch Dd being cute with her two boys---Henry and Dickens---who were fighting over her attention.  I'm posting them in the order of taking them and never did get a good picture although I tried to!

Hello Friends!
A busy week; with sunshine!  I always took sunshine for granted, until I moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan.  The sun came out on Monday so I rushed to get my camera to get some pictures.  But, then the sun reappeared often throughout the week. There had not been three days in a row with sunshine, but perhaps we broke that record this week.  It was so nice to see blue skies again.  It feels so weird to see gray skies all day, day after day, but that is typical for this region.  Living in Indiana for 15 years spoiled me!  Most days are sunny and often I felt there was too much sunshine!  Long gone are the days of closing the curtains to get a break of the penetrating sunshine.  I certainly enjoyed this week's special treat of sunshine!  The temperature was extremely cold most days--around 5 degrees in the mornings and snow here and there, like normal.  The poor chickens couldn't go all the way to the outer coop because of the wind chill, but I did let them in the plastic wrapped outer run one day.  This February has been super cold and snowy this year.

Movie Theater: Lego Movie 2
Dd and Dh had gone to the movies, back in Indiana, to see the Lego Movie back in 2014.  Dd wanted to go with Dh back to see the sequel, but this time I invited myself to go along with them!  I have to admit, I fell asleep fairly quickly as it just wasn't that interesting. I kept waking up and trying to force myself to pay attention, as we paid good money to see this movie!  I had to chuckle when I looked over and saw Dh sound asleep too!  We normally do not sleep in the movies as we don't go very often.  Two reasons for our napping: 1) the movie wasn't very interesting. 2) The theater has these wonderful recliner chairs that elevate your legs and feet and you feel like you are in a high-tech bed!  We have the best movie theater, the seats are awesome---which is obviously a blessing and a curse!

Dd's Lesson Motivation:
This was a particularly difficult week for Dd's lessons.  She really struggled with motivation.

Chickens:
Ah, the poor chickens at the end of winter...I feel so bad for them!  I've been cooking up special meals for them at least once per day, sometimes twice a day, and a few times I've done it three times in one day.  Being a novice with chickens I probably over-do and spoil them, but I just am trying so hard to keep them healthy.  A few girls look a bit dirty and worn so I have been really making an effort.  This week I've been making a big pot of rice then adding canola oil, cornmeal, flax, scrambled eggs, crumbled egg shells, and any food left-overs available.  Then I take it out to the coop and dump in an equal amount of their feed into the pan or bowl and stir until the feed it thoroughly mixed in and then serve.  They love the mix.  I fear that they love it so much they aren't eating their plain food as much!

Funeral: Ken
We lost a friend from church this week.  He and his wife shared their pew with us each week.  There is something to sharing a pew with another couple that made me feel like we had a special connection.   I know everyone always says there isn't assigned seating at church, but humans certainly are creatures of habit and I'm betting they have sat there for years before we moved here!  It has been so sad not seeing him in our pew more often as the months of his cancer diagnosis stretched on.  He was such a nice, quiet, hunting-fishing type of guy, a guy like Dh.  He went to be with the Lord on Tuesday and his funeral service was at church on Friday.  I made a huge batch of potato salad and Dh made two different desserts: frosted brownies and shortbread, chocolate, peanut butter squares---everything from scratch.  The service had over 200 people there.  It made us all so pleased to see such a huge turnout for such a humble guy.  He had planned every detail in advance; asking both our last pastor and a new one both to have time preaching the word.  Perhaps some people came that hadn't been in a church in a while that needed a reminder of the love, support, fellowship, brother/sisterhood that a church can provide, not to mention salvation.  We hope hearing how Ken loved the Lord will plant a few seeds in their hearts.

90th Birthday Party: Don
I have never been to a 90th birthday party before, at least not one with a man standing for at least 4-6 hours greeting everyone with a huge smile on his face!  Don is one in a million.  Don, his wife, their six children, and various other relatives filled our fellowship building along with church friends like Dh, Dd and me.  It was quite a turnout!  Don retired from being our church greeter this year.  Until recently he was the first person you would greet when you walked in our church's front door.  I was so happy to see Don surrounded by so many people that love and appreciate him like I do!

Felt Bird:
I finished another felt bird this week.  I went back to the design I was using last week and was pleased with the end result.

Endodontist: Root Canal
The penicillin really helped diminish the pain from my infected root in my mouth.  My dentist, Sammy, recommended a fantastic endodontist.  I was pleasantly surprised at how well this procedure went.  I think I was only there an hour and a half.  Most importantly, he didn't hurt me!  My mouth wasn't even sore the next day from all the shots he had given me to make sure I was thoroughly numb for the procedures.  I had been alternating between Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen every 2-3 hours up until the procedure, but all that ended after the visit.  I was completely off the meds by the day after the visit; which was important to me because NSAID's are horrible for my sensitive stomach.  Praise the Lord for all the answered prayers!

Gerd/IBS:
Not a good week.  All the penicillin and meds really soured my system.  This just wasn't a great week for my body.  Hoping it can bounce back now that my tooth is fixed.

Bible Study: (my bible study)
Armor of God by Priscilla Shirer
So far, I am really enjoying this study.

Next Week:
Hopefully, next week will be less eventful.  We had church activities Sunday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday.  I'm hoping to get back to my workouts that I had to stop doing with my tooth infection for the past two weeks.  We need to start thinking about planting tomato seeds inside soon; spring is getting closer although the weather next week is supposed to be back in the low single-digits part of the week.  The forecast for Michigan the first two weeks of March isn't looking like it will be any warmer; perhaps colder than now.

May the good Lord bless and keep you!

Feb. 10-16, 2016 Root Infection, Black Hen, Snow, Power Returned, End Eye Drops

Feb. 10-16, 2016
Root Infection, Black Hen, Snow, Power Returned, End Eye Drops

Hello Friends!
Happy Valentine's Day
A rough week.  It feels like the past year has been exceptionally difficult, and this is coming from someone that has a lot of hard times.  When I am stressed or upset I clench my jaws really tightly at night especially and with the loss of my aunt and the decision about whether or not I could go really stressed me out.

I ended up getting some sort of wicked infection up in the roof of my mouth from an old root canal root going bad; I won't find out exactly what is wrong until my appointment with the specialist next week.  I guess old root canals can still cause problems; I had no clue.  I poured out my heart about this decision to travel or not with my Sunday School ladies group and asked them to pray for me to make the right decision.

Church: Thankful for Fellowship of Kindness
Speaking of my Sunday School church group; man, are they amazing.  You know, I received two Valentine's Day cards are they were both from that group.  One of the cards was from LouAnn, and my heart aches to say this, but, she wrote and sent me a card when her husband is struggling with cancer.  What kind of astonishing Christian is that?!?!  It just blows my mind.  I am beyond blessed to have such a mind blowing Sunday School group of ladies.  I honestly don't even have the social skills to know how to respond to such nice people and am *often* at a loss at what to do and what to say.  I'm so blessed to have an opportunity to learn from them.  So, no matter how many little things keep going wrong right now, I know I am a child of God and actively being blessed by these women.  And, they are also teaching my Dd in Youth Group and helping me raise another child of God---priceless.

By Tuesday my teeth were killing me.  Wednesday I drove through un-plowed roads to get to a doctor to get checked.  The doctor said it was an infected tooth, not sinus, and put me on penicillin.  She also told me to call my dentist as soon as I got back home; which I did, but, they couldn't fit me in until Friday.  I laid in agony Wednesday and Thursday, in bed, while the antibiotics started working.  I hate spending a whole day in bed, much less two days in bed.  I did have enough "umph" to do the morning chores for my chickens and Dd and Dh did the nighttime ones.   Luckily I felt good enough to drive myself to the dentist on Friday.  It is amazing how much antibiotics can help take out the pain from infections; I've had this problem before and am thankful for the decrease in pain.  The dentist on Friday took two X-rays and told me within three minutes that I needed to see a specialist and called to schedule me in with him.  Unfortunately, the specialist isn't open until next Thursday...talk about hoop after hoop after hoop.  And waiting to have your root canal re-opened and cleaned out while it is all swollen and surrounded with puss isn't something you want to dwell on day after day; I'd rather just get it over with, if possible!

Can you make out all the deer tracks throughout the snow?  It is amazing to see in person.

Decision: Funeral
Last week I was lamenting whether or not I should or could fly out to be at my aunt's funeral.  I'm relieved I didn't buy tickets immediately because I wouldn't have been able to go.  After losing our power, we were on our generator most of last week and had two more ice storms headed our way for this week as well as a winter storm headed to Boston on the day we would have flown there, so logistically it just felt like a bad idea.  Dd offered to stay home alone and take care of the animals while Dh and I went, but I didn't feel right leaving her alone when ice storms were heading our way.  When our power goes out we have to 'roll' our extremely heavy generator from our outbuilding to the far side of our house; which isn't easy!  Then there is the re-filling it with gas every 6 -8 hours---not easy.  Also, since we live up a big hill with a long winding driveway we have to snow blow the drive throughout the week.  All of that, plus animal care would really be a big job for her since she doesn't normally have to do much.  THEN my mouth went crazy on Tuesday and I was glad I hadn't bought the plane tickets.  There is no way I could have gone in the amount of pain I was in.  I really wish I could have gone, but things just all went backward this week.

Black Hen:
My sick black hen died, after about a month of slowly getting worse.  I've only had one other chicken die on me before and she had something wrong with a lodged egg I think.  This poor girl was struggling for weeks now and wouldn't take any help from me so I was pretty helpless in getting her to improve.  I've been able to hand feed and pay special attention to languishing birds, in the past, and bring them back up to thriving.  I've taken pride in how well I've cared for my chickens and feel awful she got so sick, worse I feel relieved she isn't struggling anymore.  I wish I knew how to administer antibiotics; I'm sure she just needed a little help to get over the illness, which I think was pneumonia.  Maybe somewhere along the way, I will be able to acquire more knowledge and be able to care better for them in the future when they get sick.

Power Back:
Monday at 3:30 pm we finally had our power returned.  The chickens got to get back to their normal cooked rice!

It made me happy to be able to cook for them again too!  It was great warming the house back up past 61 degrees!  I know many people across the U.S. were really cold compared to us, we have a pretty big generator that allowed us to do more than just 50 degrees.

Snow:
Tuesday was back to major snow again, those ice storms behind us, and I was back on snowblowing duty both in the morning and in the evening.  The snow was so heavy and wet it took me almost 2 hours each time I went out, but I have to keep the driveway clear for Dh to get back home each night.

This Red Squirrel crawled INSIDE my sunflower feeder to eat!

Broke Snowblower:
Friday Dd had to snow blow as I was under the weather and don't you know; it broke!  We had to manually shovel our really long driveway to get our van back up to our house and to clear the path so Dh could get up it when he came home.  It was a very challenging job as under the snow was ice.  Dd and I both tried and tried to drive the van up the hill but we couldn't get any traction and had to reverse and go back down.

After getting shovels and digging down through the ice to dirt and rocks we were able to get the van up the hill.  It does make me appreciate the snowblower and the Subaru!  Our van just wasn't made for driving on snow or ice.  We really need a second auto that can drive in the snow.  Dd and I have been home without a usable car for most of the past month, now that Dh is back at work and needs the best car for the long commute.  Hopefully, at some point, we can figure something out so we can have two cars that drive in the winter.  When Dh finally got home he was able to fix it!  Thankful!

Dd's Felt Bird:
Dd gave me the felt bird she started last week as a kindness for my sadness for the death of my aunt.  I am always impressed with how carefully and beautifully she makes things, her bird is the prettiest bird so far this year.

Dh's Eye Drops:
Dh had another appointment with his eye doctor and he had his last day of eye drops on Friday!!!  I'm so glad he is finally winding down all his work towards keeping his eye.  Next week when he goes back he doesn't have to see the doctor, just the nurses, who will check his eye pressure to make sure he is doing fine without the drops.

My Bible study currently is Beth Moore's book and Bible Study, both titled To Live Is Christ.  The odd thing, they aren't connected at all?!  I'm almost done with the book but just started the workbook/bible study.  Our Ladies Sunday School has been doing Entrusted by Beth Moore; which is on Paul and the book of 2 Timothy.  So, this Bible study is a bit redundant and I've ordered a new study for me by Priscilla Shirer called: Armor of God that I should receive next week.

Fun Reading:
The 100: Book One by Kass Morgan: In Process
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen: In Process
(We re-watched Pride and Prejudice this week, the one with Keira Knightly...love it!)

Next Week:
I'll be having my appointment with the oral surgeon about my infected root.  I'm praying it goes alright and they can fix whatever is wrong and infected; without too much pain and agony.  I had to return our two audio's (My Antonia and Jane Eyre) to the library because they were due back, but we will be getting them back again and can hopefully get closer to their conclusion.  I hate not finishing a book once started!!  I'm also hoping this week the weather won't be as bad as it has been, I need a break from snow blowing and shoveling, especially with this infection bringing me down.
