Hello, Friends!

What a week! No power! There were such huge winds in Michigan that thousands lost their power for days.  We lost our power early on Wednesday and it didn't come back on until Saturday around 4pm.  Luckily we have a generator that keeps the lights and heat on, but with limits.  One sure does get thankful for electricity after not having it!  

Wednesday after music lessons, Dd and I went toTractor Supply to look for ducks.  We would have gone to Tractor Supply on  Monday but Dd had been sick...and was sick all week.  Dh reached the miserable point by Thursday but continued to go to work even though he was miserable.  It seems we all have been fighting this bug, though I've managed to do most of our 'have to's,' though I did spend a LOT of time in bed this week.  

Dd finally has her two new ducklings!  Boy, are they cute!!

Tractor Supply received their shipment of ducks this week!  Dd was over the moon!  Dh encouraged me to try 2 new breeds to go along with our growing (yet small) flock.  

Besides the two ducks, we bought two Isa Brown's (abundant brown egg layers and docile)  and two Bantams. 

This is one, of the two, new Bantam chicks we bought.  This one had a poop plug that I had to soak off.  Her first hour with us was a wet one!  Don't worry, she dried and was soon happy.  This Bantam is very loud and complains quite a bit!

Bantams are small chickens--the two we have are very different in coloring, and I have no idea exactly what kind they are!  I was very hesitant to get the Bantams, but Dd really wanted them herself.  They are extremely cute and remind me of hummingbirds at this stage.  We haven't decided on our names yet.

This precious Bantam chick is just a dear.  She is so sweet and kind.  Her personality is the opposite of the other Bantam.

  For now, all the young poultry are in our house, inside the cardboard brooder house Dd built.  It is very chilly here--low of 14 degrees today, and snow on the way.  I'm glad we had the generator to keep the heat lamp on the babies.

We still have our Barred Owl hanging around.  This one is much smaller than the one we usually see.  You can tell my the size of the small branch it is sitting on that it isn't very heavy or big.

Sick Week:

This week was not a great academic or musical week.  With the bug we all just managed to get the basic's done.  I gave Dd the whole week off math as she was just too muddled to even try.  She did sitting things---drawing, crocheting, audio books...

Day Two--she was looking much better!

New Violin Teacher:(Monday)

Our second week with our new violin teacher was very good.  I'm SO glad!  Dd said she could even hear the difference.  She said she was beginning to think she was not going to get better, and happily she is improving.

Band/Piano Classes: (Wednesday)

Classes went really well this week.

Strings Group: (Thursday)

Thursday and Friday I was very tired.  I made the executive decision to stay in and miss our wonderful Strings Group---even though Dd has been doing so well learning to play the eukelele.

Girl's Night: (Friday)

Girl's Night was a 'games night' this month.  Dd had a great time, and so did I!  I spent the time chatting with the mom that hosts the event.  This is the family that we first meet, way back in March two years ago, and she invited us to a bible study event.

Walking With Frodo by Sarah Arthur

I made a post before this post about this book.  I shared some example pages for you to see if you are curious about this bible devotional.  I really have enjoyed the message and the specific bible verses the author has assigned.  Dd and I have had some really good discussion thanks to this book.

Bible Verse in Cursive:

each week I give the assignment for Dd to pick out a good bible verse and to copy it in cursive in a cute little book we bought just for her bible verses.  I think it will good for her to look back and be able to read the which verses were her favorites as a young woman when she is older.

Praying For My Future Husband by Robin Jones Gunn

Dd has been reading this book and enjoying it very much.  She has decided to start a teen girl's bible study and this will be the first book they study.  I bought a copy for her, so she can write in it, and prepare, and I'll read the library version she has.  I'm glad she is wanting to lead a bible study, and am trying to help her get it started and planned out.

The Insanity of God: A Story of Faith Resurrected by Nik Ripken

A friend at church offered for me to borrow his book and read it.  It was one of those wonderful missionary stories of great extreme miracles that inspire growth.  If anyone enjoys reading non-fiction missionary stories that show the power and wonder of the Lord, and how He works in people's lives around the world, this is a great find!

This was such a good, fun, easy read.  Not heavy, but gently shares the time period with the reader.

I think this is at least our third book of Bruchac's we've read, and each one has been very good.

Both of my orchids are either blooming or preparing to bloom again!  I've finally figured out how to care for these plants and keep them alive and thriving.

To keep the new little ones (Bantams and Isa Brown's) safe and secure I put them inside this box.  They were getting stepped on and pushed around (accidentally) by the bigger chicks.  I noticed immediately that they would need their own secure spot.  Here they are, a box inside a box!  But these AmberLinks are perched on the top, so it isn't perfect.

Review: Walking With Frodo

We are often disappointed with many bible programs but wanted to share one that we are actually enjoying.  I bought it for Dd as a Christmas gift, due to the title, but I hadn't read it before buying it.  I think the reviews were good, so I gave it a go.

Each section is about 2-3 pages of some tie-in between LOTR (Lord of the Rings) and a biblical connection.  Then they have a specific thought; like the picture above that said: "Your Biggest Foe Is Pride Itself."

Then there are some bible verses to read, and then some good discussion questions in the: "Going Further" section.

I've really liked the bible verses we are to look up each day.  I also have really enjoyed the discussions Dd and I have had answering the "Going Further" section.  If LOTR movies and/or books are part of your education, this devotional would be a good addition.  This isn't a bible dissection, but a conduit for good discussion.  I have to admit I hadn't made many of the connections until this author pointed them out to me!

Chickens ALWAYS have to stand on something!  It never fails!  

Sophie enjoys watching the chickens whenever she gets the chance!

I have to change out the towels twice a day.  They make such a mess and seem to enjoy flipping over their food cups as soon as I put them in!

The three pale yellow chicks at the feeder are AmberLinks.  They will turn to be a dark red color when they grow up.

When I open up the door the chicks feel comfortable to pounce out now!  I try to hold and pet as many as I can each day.  It is interesting to turn the chicks over and watch how quickly they start to fall asleep!

Every chick has such different wing growth.

Tetra Brown's are really pretty with their brown - caramel colored feathers coming in.

This is the very chirpy, complainy of the two new Bantams.  She had a massive poop stuck to her bottom that I had to soak and gently work off when we got her home.  Once the hardened part came off then poop inside was free to flow out.  Poor thing, she really had an impacted-shut bowel.  

This picture was taken on her second day with us.  Her bottom was wet the first day we had her.

This is the SWEETEST little Bantam.  She is so easy-going and doesn't fuss.  Her temperament is wonderful.

 

The 2 Bantams and 2 Isa Brown's are too small to put with the bigger girls.  The big girls were literally stepping on the little ones, so I but a box inside the brooder box to keep them safe and not stressed by the bigger girls.

The TWO DUCKS fit right in with the bigger chicks.  They haven't had any trouble adapting with the new crowd.

Dd is quite happy with her new duckies!

We are done buying new poultry for the year!  More than I can handle as it is!!  I'm having to clean water bowls 4-6 times a day!  Lots of work cleaning out the box, vacuuming bottom, putting in new towels, washing towels........  Now to enjoy watching them grow!
