Sonlight Core H Week 2A Oct. 24-30, 2016

Sonlight Core H
Week 2A
Oct. 24-30, 2016
Sophie had her tumor removed, from her mouth, this week.  Biopsy confirmed an aggressive, fast-growing cancer.

Hello Friends!
Another week of fall, and the trees are beginning to look very bare.  Last week was the high point of the color and this week the wind and rain have brought a lot of leaves down.  I'm so thankful the weather has been so awesome this October!

  The patio doors we ordered should come in on Friday, and it would be great if we had some nice weather when we take out the old double doors.  We did have to turn on the heat this week, so winter is getting closer each day...if only we can get those new doors in before snow.  We did get sleet once this week, but for just thirty minutes or so.

Sophie:
Sophie made it through her surgery, on Wed., to remove the tumor in the back of her throat/mouth.  The doctor said she couldn't get all of it, as it was up in her palate, and it was a 'very difficult surgery' due to the placement of the tumor.

She sent the tumor off to be biopsied and we should hear back this week the results and findings.  Prayers appreciated for Sophie; I love her so! P.S. The biopsy came back with bad news, sarcoma.  The doctor said it will come back and eventually go into her lungs.  The prognosis was not good, not good at all.

House:
We didn't do anything to the house this week, but worked out on the addition to the chicken coop.

We are replacing the old fence posts with new ones wherever there is a rotted out one.  We've put in quite a few new posts!

 We were hoping more of the old would be sturdy, but that wasn't the case.

We have most of the wire fencing attached behind the posts, but still have to figure out how to attach the fencing to the metal gates.

  It will be SO nice not having chicken poop on my deck and driveway!

 I want free-range chickens, but not the mess, so this new extension should make everyone happy.

Last week we had our friends, the "L" family here, and next week we will have Giz and Grampy with us, so this week was our quiet, rest-up, recover, and focus on Sophie week.  I have to admit I was distracted this week with my heart focused on Sophie.

Math:
On Tuesday we went to a friends house to see their Abeka math (Algebra I) program.  They let us take a disc home to watch it some more, and do a few days of it to determine suitability. I looked up the prices online, and hate to buy a third math program for Algebra I!  Each program generally costs around $200...and this class is getting expensive!  Dd thought the Abeka looked easier than TT and MUS and that she could be able to finish this program, so it is an option...but, I am still trying to figure out how to make what we have already work.    She has been doing Khan Academy and Abeka this week.  We haven't figured anything out yet, but I thought I'd share our dilemma; perhaps next week will be better?

Church and Harvest Party:
This Sunday was our one year anniversary at our new church!  I am so thankful we found such a nice, friendly, and loving church!!!!  Wednesday Dd helped run the Olympians programs' Games session, while I stayed home with Sophie (I had just picked her up from the vet two hours earlier).   Sunday was Missionary Sunday and we had five different missionaries share with us how they are doing.  Then, Sunday night was the Harvest Party; celebrated with a sister-church.  Dd had a great time playing games and having fun with this group of Christian kids.  A man in our church is Franklin Graham pastor that goes to crisis sites around the world to minister to people getting through floods, fires, or civil unrest, and he gave the kids a very inspiring talk and shared his testimony.  I have to admit, I was very moved and encouraged by his talk too!  He did a great job inspiring us all to accept their assignment from God to encourage the people around them; to give instead of take, in their lives.

Done for the week---we have to enclose, in wire, the gates on both sides next time.  Soon this whole area behind the barn will all be fenced in and the chickens will have plenty of run to roam around in, and off my porch!

My kind friend, Michele Z., and her son, went for a hike with us on Tuesday.  There is a park near us that we've not hiked at, at least we hadn't before!  It was a beautiful hike, and great fellowship for Dd and I...thankful for friends!

A psalm of David.

Lord, hear my prayer,

    listen to my cry for mercy;

in your faithfulness and righteousness

    come to my relief.

Do not bring your servant into judgment,
    for no one living is righteous before you.
The enemy pursues me,
    he crushes me to the ground;
he makes me dwell in the darkness
    like those long dead.
So my spirit grows faint within me;
    my heart within me is dismayed.
I remember the days of long ago;
    I meditate on all your works
    and consider what your hands have done.
I spread out my hands to you;
    I thirst for you like a parched land.[a]
Answer me quickly, Lord;

    my spirit fails.

Do not hide your face from me

    or I will be like those who go down to the pit.

Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love,
    for I have put my trust in you.
Show me the way I should go,
    for to you I entrust my life.
Rescue me from my enemies, Lord,
    for I hide myself in you.
10
Teach me to do your will,
    for you are my God;
may your good Spirit
    lead me on level ground.

11
For your name’s sake, Lord, preserve my life;

    in your righteousness, bring me out of trouble.
12
In your unfailing love, silence my enemies;

    destroy all my foes,

    for I am your servant.

Apologia Exploring Creation with Physical Science Module 1 Experiment 1.1

Apologia Exploring Creation with Physical Science
Module 1: The Basics
Experiment 1.1: Atoms and Molecules

We had all the things we needed already, which made things easy.

Black/gray line to positive side of pattery

White line to Negative side of battery
As we hooked each wire to each side of the battery, we placed a piece of black electrical tape to keep the wire in place.

After we got the battery and wires completed, we got our glass of water and then added the baking soda.

Stirred the baking soda together and separated the wires, so they wouldn't ever touch/connect.

As soon as we put the wires into the water bubbles started rising up.  We left the wires in the water for 10-15 minutes.  We could see the black/gray wire was turning green in the water, while the white wire didn't change.

After we removed the wires from the water, we could really see the color change on the wire that had been on the positive side.

So, why did the wires, when hooked up to the battery create bubbles?  The water in the glass was full of billions (and billions...) of water molecules.  When the electricity ran through the water it separated the molecules into atoms...it borke the water molecules down into hydrogen and oxygen ... which are actually gases, and those gases rose through the water and went into the air.  A water molecule is composed of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom that are linked together, combined they create what we know of as "water."  So two different atoms can combine and create something totally new and unique...in this case, water!  And a little electricity can break down their connection and return them to their original form (a gas in this case).

Fun Experiment!

Fallsburg Park, Michigan Oct.27, 2016

Fallsburg Park, Michigan
Oct.27, 2016

Michele invited Dd and I along with her and her son for a hike on Thursday.  We had visited Fallsburg Park a few times, but never got on one of their trails; as they are kinda tricky to find and stay on.  It was great to see the trails finally!  We had a lovely walk through the fall leaves and quiet.  We didn't see one person on the walk; always a nice bonus!

Counting this walk among my blessings for the week!

Our Daily Bread October 2016

Our Daily Bread
October 2016

We read Our Daily Bread each day, and The Secret Place, and glean so much from them that I wanted to share.  The daily message is always encouraging, and often I learn something new.   The daily message is always great, but every once-in-a-while there is a message that really clicks with me.  Back in Sept., on the 28th, there was just such a stirring post, on how the Holy Spirit and Jesus are praying for each of us.  I'll paraphrase the message, so not to plagiarize--
When we are having tough times it is common for Christians to ask other Christians to pray for them.  When those brothers and sisters tell us that they have been praying for our needs, it really makes us feel good and uplifted.  We are encouraged by our friends finding the time to pray specifically for us.  But, what happens if a Christian doesn't have another Christian to ask for added prayer from?  Who can they turn to?
Romans 8:26-27 says:

Romans 8:26-27New International Version (NIV)

26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

The Holy Spirit is praying for us.

Romans 8:26-27: "We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans...The Spirit intercedes for God's people in accordance with the will of God."

Romans 8:34New International Version (NIV)

34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.

Jesus is praying for us also.

I have to admit, I have never thought of this...not once.  I'm struck by the fact that the Holy Spirit, and Jesus are interceding (praying) for me individually; as They are for you also!  The Holy Spirit and our Lord Jesus Christ bring us specifically up and share our concerns to God.  God hears these prayers and intercedes on our behalf.  No matter how tough a day can be, it is so reassuring to know that our needs are being prayed for on our behalf.  We are that special and beloved.

The Secret Place is another daily devotional we read, Giz and Grampy like it better than Our Daily Bread.  Here is their website: http://www.judsonpress.com/catalog_secretplace.cfm

We get these devotionals at church for free.  You might see if your church has them, or ask around.  I am not connected to these devotionals in any way, have nothing to gain for mentioning them---just really felt the push to share this message, for some reason, and am following that push in obedience.  I really do like these devotions a lot, and have for year after year after year!
