SL Core G Week 2 "D" Oct. 6-10th, 2014

SL Core G
Week 2 "D"
Oct. 6-10th, 2014
(Seventh week on Core G)

Dd took this night time picture--I liked it so much I wanted to share it with you all!

Dd is still adding onto her plastic bottle piece; here is what it looks like now.

Difficult to summarize this week--as it was very ***; not sure what to say about it, exactly....  On Monday, Dd was already not in a participatory mood!  Being a 12 year old girl has it's good weeks, and it's bad weeks.  The advantage to having years of homeschooling under my belt, is that I can see when to walk away from a bad situation.  In years past, I pushed doing our lessons, even on days when Dd's mood was as sour as vinegar!  Boy, those difficult days were awful!  She didn't learn anything and I ended up burnt!  I would think, 'why didn't I just leave her be and wait for her to be open again to learning...later?'  So, that is the story of our week--she was going through some hormone days, and I let her be, and tried to maintain my sanity.  She did the work that was on her independent schedule and by herself.   So, "we" didn't get much done--but enough that I still feel okay about it.  At least we didn't have any major meltdowns, like we would have done if I had tried to be a teacher this week.

With LOTS of time to herself this week; she spent time on various activities: keyboarding each day (and she got to play on her piano in Indiana on Thursday and Friday), crocheting, sand sticker 'painting' kits by Giz (x2), and plastic bottle table continuation project...

Thursday we left Michigan and drove to our house in Indiana.  I mowed and fertilized the yard on Thursday evening.  After the yard work, I called my husband to find out HIS car had a broken water pump!  My car just got out of the shop 1 1/2 weeks ago!  He had a bunch of problems, but managed to get it home.  Friday, he got it into the same shop that had just fixed my van.  He had to call in sick to work since he didn't have a way to get there.  I did offer to drive back home Thursday night, so he could go to work, but he thought he would ask a friend to drive him in on Friday.  So, we are back to having ONE auto again...which hubby will use to get to work, and Dd and I will be home without a ride again....no fun!  But, hopefully the shop will be able to fix his car fairly quickly.  You would never believe how much they charged to fix my van....whatever you are thinking, triple it!  I'm hopeful they won't be charging that much on hubby's car repairs!

Friday morning, Dd and I met the "L" family at their house at 9:30 am to start our visit.  We packed up and went to Eagle Creek Park for our hike.  It was a COLD and drizzly day, but we were so happy to be there we didn't care.  It was 48 F (which is 8.89 C) degrees when we checked the temperature.  We did our hike, then set up for our camp out.  We got a fire going, and roasted hot dogs on the fire while the camp stove cooked the apple cider and baked beans.  After lunch we made s'mores!  It was great to warm up with hot cider and hot dogs!  We also had a veggie platter that was fantastic!  After the park, we went back to the "L" house for a homemade pizza dinner!  Delicious!  Then Heather and I worked on some sewing/craft projects while the kids watched the Lord of the Rings; The Two Towers movie.  Then we had to end our visit and regretfully go home--at 10 PM!  What a great visit!  Such a blessing!

Saturday we cleaned up the house, and then got on the road to return to Michigan--and hubby, who was stuck at home without a car!  It is a FIVE hour drive between our house in Indiana and our apartment in Michigan.  It is a fairly easy drive, thanks to my Garmin/GPS, normally, but.....BUT....the Garmin/GPS froze after 1/4 of the way home!!!! and I have not memorized the route!  And have no sense of direction!!!  So, we had to call my hubby every bit to get the next part of the directions.  I messed up a few times, and had to turn around a few times, but we eventually found our way back!  What.a.day!

Now for our lessons:
all done by Dd without me this week-

Bible:
we took the week off from our bible lessons; but did our Psalm of the week: Psalm 122 with the Bible and Believer's Bible Commentary

Psalm 122

A song of ascents. Of David.

I rejoiced with those who said to me,
    “Let us go to the house of the Lord.”
Our feet are standing
    in your gates, Jerusalem.

Jerusalem is built like a city
    that is closely compacted together.
That is where the tribes go up—
    the tribes of the Lord
to praise the name of the Lord
    according to the statute given to Israel.
There stand the thrones for judgment,
    the thrones of the house of David.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
    “May those who love you be secure.
May there be peace within your walls
    and security within your citadels.”
For the sake of my family and friends,
    I will say, “Peace be within you.”
For the sake of the house of the Lord our God,
    I will seek your prosperity.

SL Core G Week 2"C" Sept. 29th-Oct 3rd, 2014

SL Core G
Week 2"C"
Sept. 29th-Oct 3rd, 2014
(Sixth Week on Core G)

After going to the ER last Sunday, and still suffering from my migraine on Monday (but much better than the day before), we did the best we could on our lessons.  Tuesday was my best day of the week, and a reprieve from my migraine for 24 hours.  Wednesday and Thursday were ‘okay’; and I was so mentally exhausted on Friday that I took the whole day off from lessons.  Dd went ahead and did some of our lessons by herself.  Saturday was finally my first day back to being ME again!  Praising the Lord that this migraine phase has come to an end!!!

I'm not sure if Dd is done yet, or not--but here is where her centerpiece is today.  I recommended she could use the hot glue gun to glue acorns around the pine cones and make a bit of a frame with it.  I'll take another picture of the completed project when/if she goes back to it.

This was not a ‘keyboarding week’, but a craft week for both of us.  Dd went from project to project this week---creating lovely things each day.  She watched a video online that taught her how to make crocheted hearts, and ended up making a chain of hearts.  I will put pictures of her projects in this post, and also put some on the “Busy Hands” post right after this entry.

These are just two of the rubber band pieces she made this week.

I started my Christmas projects on Saturday!!!  Dd and I went to the store: Tuesday Morning and found some supplies on sale, which gave me the materials for the idea I had brewing.  I had bought a cute little chipmunk stuffed animal last year with the intention of making my two nephews stuffed animals.  We found a light blue and a dark blue fleece material for a decent price—just what I needed to get going!  I am having a blast figuring out how to duplicate the stuffed animal.

In Process---just thought I'd post a picture of how far I got in two days.  I'm really enjoying this very much!  It was fun figuring the pieces I'd need to design, draw, and cut out of paper and then use as a template on the fleece.

At Tuesday Morning we also found a mini hot glue gun to buy.  What is funny is that I already own THREE hot glue guns…but, they are in a box somewhere!!!  Dd was so excited that she spent hours and hours at the table playing with the hot glue gun, figuring out what she could with it!  I am thinking about getting her a soldering kit; I bet she would really enjoy learning how to do that.  I’d been waiting for her to get a bit older and believe she is ready.  She did a great job being careful with the glue gun.

Plastic bottles glued together to make a table; by Dd...and the hot glue gun!

Dh’s job is going better this week.  He has worked 14 days straight, as of today—and has another five days to go until next Saturday.  He doesn’t know if he will have to work then or not.  But, he is working a LOT of hours!!!  He has to be at work tomorrow at 5AM!  Even though he is working so many hours, he is really happy to be at this new job.  It seems like he has friends there now—and is a part of a TEAM.  He doesn’t have to be alone fighting against things, but part of a team.  I am so glad he is doing so well—hoping that Dd and I can adjust better soon.  She and I aren’t doing nearly as well as he is; but are praying for things to get better for us two.

Dd saved up water bottles (water here in our apartment is awful) to make this "table" of water bottles.  Of course, it took hours of building with her new hot glue gun to complete!

Our house in Indiana is still very much “for sale”, but we haven’t had any viewings in about a week.  The last family that came said they wanted a different floor plan.

Well, that is our LIFE updates – now for our lessons!  We are still knee-deep in our study of Ancient Egypt.  This week we also read a children’s adaptation of The Epic of Gilgamesh, called Gilgamesh, the Hero.  It was a really good book, though I was a bit worried in the beginning when Gilgamesh was seduced…I was afraid I should have pre-read the book!!!!  But, it didn’t get “R” rated after all!  Phew!  I had read the book back in college, and didn’t remember that part!  The ending was really special and touching.  I won’t spoil it, but as a parent it really touched my heart.

Dd designed and made this Christmas bird

Christie, my SL friend, had sent us some books to read while doing our Ancients study.  We got into some of those books this week: Miriam by Beatrice Gormley and the Landmark book- The Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt, and Tirzah by Lucile Travis.  Thanks, Christie!!!

We are still reading “OUR” books, and will have another week doing “Week Two”.  I’m not sure if we will move on to Week Three after this or if we will continue adding our books in.  I have a LOT of books about this time period and want to make sure we cover all the basics and really get deep.  Since we have completed all the Sonlight assignments for Week Two has freed up some of our time, so we have been able to do a little extra Science this week!!!! Yay!

My little focus for this week (regarding Science) was to learn about Igneous Rocks!  Which we did, and I will be specific in our science section, below.  I ordered three rock sets from Rainbow Resource for us to look at with our stereo microscope; and we are!

Psalm of the week:

Psalm 63[a]

A psalm of David. When he was in the Desert of Judah.

You, God, are my God,
    earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
    my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
    where there is no water.
I have seen you in the sanctuary
    and beheld your power and your glory.
Because your love is better than life,
    my lips will glorify you.
I will praise you as long as I live,
    and in your name I will lift up my hands.
I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;
    with singing lips my mouth will praise you.
On my bed I remember you;
    I think of you through the watches of the night.
Because you are my help,
    I sing in the shadow of your wings.
I cling to you;
    your right hand upholds me.
Those who want to kill me will be destroyed;
    they will go down to the depths of the earth.
10 They will be given over to the sword
    and become food for jackals.
11 But the king will rejoice in God;
    all who swear by God will glory in him,
    while the mouths of liars will be silenced.

Amazon synopsis:
Tirzah's people, the Israelites, have been in slavery to the Egyptians for many years. Tirzah and her lame brother, Oren, help gather straw to make bricks. She observes the suffering of her people and the injustices that are done to them by the Egyptian police. Moses begs Pharaoh to let them go, but Pharaoh makes them work harder.
One night, when the plague of death strikes down Pharaoh's own son, he allows the Israelites to flee on foot, only to pursue them with horses and chariots. He believes he will have them trapped between the mountains and the sea, but God miraculously delivers them. The Israelites celebrate with a song of hope and victory. Tirzah befriends a young Egyptian girl who has fled with them, even though others treat her badly. In spite of hardship and disappointment, Tirzah and her family keep trusting Yahweh to carry them through.

The “growing up” moment of the week:

I was in the kitchen doing dishes, and she came in and told me to go lie down and she would do the dishes…she then informed me I didn’t look so good and should rest.  What makes this special is that doing dishes is her LEAST favorite chore to do!  She would happily exchange dish duty with cleaning a toilet!  So, I was really impressed with her kindness and thoughtfulness.
