Core G Week 2 "A" (LOW) Sept. 15-21, 2014

Core G
Week 2 "A" (LOW)
Sept. 15-21, 2014

We are extending "Week 2" for a few weeks.  I have bought a whole shelf of books on Ancient Egypt, and don't want to move forward in our Core until we have read quite a few of these specific books.  It is planned--and we are enjoying going at our own pace and at our own level of detail.

This week Dd established her little ‘nook’ in the woods beside our apartment.  She started putting up some walls with sticks and rope to have a kind of circle of ‘hers’.  I am so very glad she found herself a little space outside that she feels comfortable in.  The rule is to bring our huge dog, Sophie, out with her on her excursions, so we are all happy and content with the balance of fun and safety.

For our activities this week—we went to the library on Monday and Thursday.  I had finally secured us an audio copy of Amazons and Swallows---a favorite audio of the “L” family.  I was so excited to get it, but it wasn’t at the hold section on Monday or Thursday.  So, we went to the Customer Service on Thursday asking about it.  They informed me it had been (past tense) waiting for us there, at the Customer Service area…NOT with the usual holds!!!  It had already been returned, and I would have to go through the process to ILL (inter-library loan) it again if I wanted it.

Here is the sheath that Dd made for the sword she had previously re-worked:

The sheath was made with card stock and duct tape, and built to perfectly fit her sword.

We didn’t go to a park during the week since we were planning a big, all-day visit to Shades Park with Dh on Saturday.  Friday we all drove down to Indiana and mowed & weeded.  Then on Saturday morning we headed right out to the park!  We had a wonderful Skipjack Tuna sandwich each, and headed for the trails.  I will do a post about our day; with pictures after posting about our lessons for this week.

*Welcome, fall!*
The drive to Indiana was definitely different this time; fall is truly here.  The leaves are changing colors and the fields are full of combines bringing in the harvests.  There were quite a few soybean fields that had already been picked!  Indiana really shines in the fall; unlike so many towns that I've in previously, it seems to really do fall best.  I use to not like fall-- at all-- but, after living in Indiana for almost 17 years I've really changed my mind.

Dd got to have a play-night with her best friends, the "L" family; here is one picture she took while there:

Our lessons for the week-

Bible:

The Greenleaf Guide To Old Testament History by Rob G. Shearer and Cyndy A. Shearer

One of the odd things about doing the Veritas Press Bible Program is that they use The Greenleaf Guide to the Old Testament workbook as the spine for the course.  BUT, the VP program skips over some sections in the bible that the Greenleaf book includes.  I’ve skipped some of the Greenleaf assignments in the past; but not many.  This week we put VP to the side, and worked on the Greenleaf assignments instead.

Sonlight Core G Week 2 Sept. 8-12, 2014

Sonlight Core G
Week 2
Sept. 8-12, 2014

The weather was fantastic on Monday and Tuesday, so we took the opportunity to go to Huff Park (the wetlands one) (on Monday) and Kirk Park (on Lake Michigan)(on Tuesday).  We had gone to Kirk Park on Saturday, so we made it there twice in two days!  It really is such a lovely park!  I just wish it was a little closer.  With our field trip days, we didn't soar on our lessons...which has been a problem since we decided to move.  Finding our 'groove' is very illusive!

Speaking of moving...our house had TWO viewings this week; which makes a total of four viewings and NO bites.  We heard back from one of the families (finally)--they wished our home had granite counters, and was "SMALLER"!  It is funny to hear a home being too big, but I can understand that with few children.  No one has made a comment about our backyard, and that is really what would sell our house- if someone was an 'outside' type of person.  For me, I really thought our home would sell very quickly and am surprised that it hasn't been viewed much or had any bites.  I know the Lord has a specific family in mind, that will enjoy our home as much as we did.  I am *trying* to be patient.  Most days I do fine with the wait, but on days that are full of other issues and problems, then my patience seems to dive.  Dh is still trying to find his way through his new job.  Therefore, each week has it's own set of ups and downs regarding that.  This last week was the most difficult for him.  He went from having one boss, to having two bosses---and the new boss is someone that he has had difficulty with since day one.  I am praying and *trying* to keep a positive attitude about all of the changes.

The weather here has been colder than Maine, and definitely Indiana!  It has been in the 40's, and feeling like snow.  Dd kept saying that it was going to snow, and I had to keep telling her it wouldn't snow until 32 degrees.  We bought Dd a new winter coat on Saturday.  I only kept out one of her coats, since I was **positive** we would be in a new home before cold weather hit!!  God must laugh at all my plans!  I've been so wrong, so often lately!

Weekly Psalm:
This week Dd chose Psalm 21 for us to read with bible and Believer's Bible Commentary:

Psalm 21[a]

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

The king rejoices in your strength, Lord.
How great is his joy in the victories you give!
You have granted him his heart’s desire
and have not withheld the request of his lips.[b]
You came to greet him with rich blessings
and placed a crown of pure gold on his head.
He asked you for life, and you gave it to him—
length of days, for ever and ever.
Through the victories you gave, his glory is great;
you have bestowed on him splendor and majesty.
Surely you have granted him unending blessings
and made him glad with the joy of your presence.
For the king trusts in the Lord;
through the unfailing love of the Most High
    he will not be shaken.
Your hand will lay hold on all your enemies;
your right hand will seize your foes.
When you appear for battle,
you will burn them up as in a blazing furnace.
The Lord will swallow them up in his wrath,
and his fire will consume them.
10 You will destroy their descendants from the earth,
    their posterity from mankind.
11 Though they plot evil against you
and devise wicked schemes, they cannot succeed.
12 You will make them turn their backs
when you aim at them with drawn bow.
13 Be exalted in your strength, Lord;
we will sing and praise your might.

Blog:
She has been trying to post pictures and thoughts on her blog each day.  Her pictures are 98 % nature pictures, and a few pix of our dog, Sophie.

Confession:
In all the years of doing Sonlight, I never figured out exactly how to do the mapping and timeline...and that seems silly now, but every time I looked at the description in the beginning of the IG it never made sense to me.  But, I took out a bunch of lined paper and each week has it's own piece of paper.  Then I wrote: "Day One" and wrote the mapping and timeline down; then "Day Two"....., "Day Three"....., "Day Four".......and "Day Five".  That really helped me see what we needed to process and focus on for the week.  Wish I had thought to do that years ago!!!!  Yes, it does take some time and effort--but well worth it.  So, we are now getting that done the SL way (instead of 'our' way!).

LA:
All About Spelling 6: Step 13: NOT completed yet

Music:
another HUGE keyboarding week!  She found some site on the internet that she can print out the notes to some of her favorite songs.  She has been working really, really hard! And is doing great figuring out piano on her own.  She had formal lessons when she was 5 years old, and has kept up her love of music, even though lessons are out of our range. Some of the songs she is playing: Concerning Hobbits, The Monkey's--Last Train to Clarksville, Demons by Imagine Dragons, I will Wait by Mumford and Sons, Best Day of My Life by American authors, the Imperial March or Darth Vader Theme, and 'her' songs that she creates herself.  She has been getting song off youtube as well.  You can google "How to Play Concerning Hobbits" or you can go here to look up songs yourself:

PLAN:
Up until now I have read everything to Dd, and with our new life here, that has not been working.  We are having Dh come home for lunch each day, which takes about 2 hours out of our day that we use to have for lessons.  It takes about an hour to get everything ready for his lunch, then 30 minutes or so, of his visit, then Dd needs/wants some time after he leaves for her break.  So, I have taken one of those "Additional Schedule Pages" from my IG and written in Dd's chores and some of the things that need to be read for the week, to take those items off my list that I would normally read to her.  I have to admit, I haven't wanted to miss anything that SL schedules, since I love the material so much!  But, I am holding us back, and this is HER education after all, isn't it!  So, I am trying this new method next week...hope it goes well.  I know most SL'ers already do this, but we haven't tried it  yet.

Kirk Park Sept. 9, 2014

Kirk Park
Sept. 9, 2014

It is the season of enjoying parks without the crowds...my favorite time of year!  Both May and September are usually fairly empty, and still having nice weather, so we tend to do extra visiting to parks.  Saturday, we all went to Kirk Park.  Monday, Dd and I went to Huff Park.  Tuesday, Dd and I went back to Kirk Park.  I didn't want to do Kirk Park so quickly, but the weather is suppose to be rainy and I wanted to make sure we could get out to another park at least once more this week.  Chelle, was asking if this area gets snow---Michigan specifically.  Well, Chelle, where we are now at gets 74.9 inches/190.2 centimeters.  In Indiana, where we use to live, gets an average annual snowfall of 25.9 inches/65.8 centimeters.
By Inches: (Michigan)74.9   vs   (Indiana)25.9
By Centimeters: (Michigan)190.2   vs   (Indiana)65.8

That is THREE times more snow!  Yes, we will be getting a lot of snow.  I am not a good driver on snowy roads (at least not yet- and fear I will be made to become better), and have been trying to get out and enjoy being outside while we can!

As you can see, the crowds are certainly dying down!  We spent 1 1/2 hours swimming--and boy, was the water chilly!

The budding photographer---has her own blog now to post HER pictures!

I had Dd fill up some viles with Lake Michigan water--now we can look at it under our microscope!

After having peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (and grapes) Dd was ready to get back into the water again!

I just love the highlights on the water.  Reminds me of my childhood memories; looking at the waves on our lake in Maine.

Dd made a sculpture of a face in the sand.

After the beach, we hiked the trail to see what nature had for us today.  The mosquito's attacked Dd, and she got 6 bites along the way.  I didn't get to take my time and enjoy the area like I had wanted to.  The bug spray was inside our car, and NOT on my Dd...where I wished it had been!  I still enjoyed the time I did get to spend there.  We were at the beach for hours, and the wonderful trail for only 30 minutes instead of camping out a bit and taking in all the things to be found!  I did find a very cool spider & web that I tried to take pictures of--but the images didn't turn out!

I don't know if you can see--Dd is bending down taking close-up pictures of things off the path.

Dd found this fungus behind a tree, off the path...good find!

Lichen/Moss...one of my favorite things on earth!

Such a graceful tree.

Huff Park Sept. 8, 2014

Sept. 8, 2014

We had a nice visit to the wetland park Monday afternoon.  I actually saw 2 birds that I have never seen (and knew that I was seeing them, at least).  I saw a Rose-Breasted Grosbeak and a precious Wren!!!!  The Rose-Breasted Grosbeak had it's nest right on the boardwalk, and only 3-4 feet away.  I could almost see inside.  The male was at the nest until he saw me, then he kept working his way up higher and higher in the trees.  The problem with today's visit to the park is that our camera's battery died only half way into our walk, so I didn't get a picture of it (the bird or nest!).

**Although, I didn't take this pictures (thanks to Google Images), I wanted to show you all what they did look like:

Rose-breasted Grosbeak
For more details on Rose Breasted Grosbeak , a medium sized song bird: http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Rose-breasted_Grosbeak/id

This is Carolina Wren, a small bird- 3 to 3 1/2 inches, the same size as a hummingbird, for more details: http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/carolina_wren/id

Last time we were here there were so many bee's---and of varying sizes and shapes.  This visit we only saw a handful of bees; but were amazed at all the dragon flies were around.  There were at least 3 different kinds of dragonflies that I saw.  There was a HUGE kind that stayed up in the sky, a really tiny kind, and a lot of the pretty red, middle sized ones.  I'm sure there were more than just those 3 species, but those are the ones I got a good look at.

This male Red Cardinal actually hopped all the way down the boardwalk!  He just stayed out of our sight.  Dd took 15 pictures trying to capture one good look; but he was really good at evading us!

This is what part of the boardwalk looks like...a real wetland, huh?!!  Poor, Sophie fell right in!

Last time we were here the bees just loved these little blooms, and would fly right in to one after the other pollinating as they go!

So many of the Cat-tails were 'spent'--and the cone-flowers too.

Core G Week 2 Sept. 8-12, 2014

Core G Week 2 Sept. 8-12, 2014

I just posted these pictures back on last weeks post, but I wanted Christie to see the sword that Dd did--and I think you said you already saw that post, so here it is up front for a few days.  I will delete these pictures and put up our new stuff in a few days.

I think she made this to be Percy Jackson's sword....

She just likes doing these little gizmo's
